There was another version, "I picked up that pile, that pile of hash, and put it in a container marked for the trash. And now Mayor Daly is pleased with me, I help keep Chicago a cleaner city!"
I remember that version too. I grew up in Athens, Ohio, but we listened to WLS all the time. The way I remember that version is, "I picked up that pile, that pile of hash, and put it into a container marked for the trash. And, now Mayor Daley is happy with me for making Chicago a cleaner city." Also, Athens is the home of Ohio University, and when anyone called in from our fair city Dick would always say something like, "A call from Athens, Ohio, the home of American Pizza University." Where he got that from I don't know, but we do have a lot of pizza shops.
Yes Robert, those were the wonderful days. Born and raised on the south side. As a boy, I never missed listening to Dick, every night. That song evoked many memories.
@@juliereminiec4937 That was Tom Glazer. And yet that was a rewrite of this song, which itself is a rewrite of On Top Of Old Smokey. Tom Glazer also sang Battle Hymn Of The Children aka The Burning Of The School.
RIP Dick Biondi-a living legend of radio is now broadcasting on a different frequency

I received WLS in Southern Illinois, Listened to Dick Biondi Every night, until my dad would come in and say. Turn that off and get to sleep.
Some great memories. Looked forward to him at night.
I also have this on tape. Here in Wisconsin, WLS was the most dependably-received station.
Good grief ! I sang along and didn't miss a word ! Some 55 years ago ?!?!

I heard him and this song when I was in high school.
I still have the 45 record I was in 7th grade.
I got to talk to Dick about this song as my dad had a copy of it.
Back when WLS was a real radio station
Actually, I liked the musical lead-ins and station promos after Biondi's song even better!
Wow! 0:58
