I recently had the opportunity to perform the Brahms on Nathan Milstein's violin, thanks to the generosity of its owner and caretaker. I therefore wanted to play a Milstein cadenza rather than the traditional Joachim.
But the published version, in a collection with Milstein's cadenzas for concerti by Beethoven, Mozart, and Paganini, wasn't quite to my taste. Nor could I find a recording of Milstein performing that cadenza as written.
But I loved the one he played in this recording:

So I transcribed it and you will find the download link at the top of this description. And before I handed the violin back, I wanted to give you one more recording of this fantastic cadenza.
I encourage you to learn and record this piece yourself, as a way to gain insight into the "other Nathan's" remarkable facility and style! :)

This is a lovely virtuoso cadenza and it's a true pleasure to hear you play it.

Thank you for the playing. Ive heard it live at the Danish Radio Symphony orchestras 50 year jubilee concert. The beginning was different but the end the same as played here. Milstein came to play with the orchestra for the first time since its first concerto 50 years before where Milstein did also play. Not many musicians do that today.

That is such a "Milstein" cadenza! And that fiddle sounds great in your hands. Is it easy to play? Seems like one of those Strads that sounds small/thin under the ear but just explodes with sound with every meter of distance.

Excellent player . Heifetz cadenza is really musical . Joachim of courserote a cadenzaas did Auer but I rarely hear either of them . Kreisler's also gets chosen a lot . I heard Milstein as a kid in West Palm and he played his Paganiniana .

Enjoyed the performance and thanks for transcribing and providing the sheet music for the cadenza! Curious as to the specific strings you are using on this instrument. My understanding is, they would be medium gauge, unless otherwise noted.

You have that old sound! Versus that super hyper, unbalanced, super fast, wacky phrasing you hear today. Bravo!

excellent fiddling, but i'm not crazy about the cadenza itself. i also dislike the Joachim. my preference is the Kreisler and the Heifetz cadenzas. (but i like Joachim for Beethoven).
