Worm Gear - 3D Animation

Worm gears are used to transmit motion between shafts with axis perpendicular to each other. The worm is essentially the driving member and the gear is the driven member. The gear cannot drive the worm and hence worm gearing has one way motion transmission. Worm has teeth cut like screw thread around a cylindrical blank. The gear has teeth cut with same tooth pitch for trouble free mating. The gear’s outer surface is either straight face or a concave face with radius of curvature equal to the inner radius of the worm. This concave face gear is known as single throated worm gear. Concave face gear and worm has better load carrying capacity. Worm gearing can produce very large reduction ratios in a single stage worm and gear combination. Worm gears tend to wear out quickly hence they are made in phosphor bronze due to its high wear resistance property.
