    Are they capturing that water for future uses? Dig a reservoir? Divert the water? Pipeline? Dam?

      The water is gone immediately. This is a high desert on the side of a mountain. We are dealing with the aftermath of a forest fire further up the mountain that burned all of the natural breaks that would divert the water into the normal multiple pathways down. Instead we get a rushing river and mudslide when the higher altitudes get heavy rain. The city is trying to catch up.

    Why not a system of reservoirs built to store this annual blessing of rainwater runoff ? Droughts CAN be minimized in effect with some planning for annual runoffs like this !

      This is not our normal situation. Please do a little research before making assumptions. This is due to damage higher up the mountain from a forest fire which burnt the natural breaks that divert the water.

      @Deborah Yourmiorgan there are a lot more trees. Things like the EPA have banned a lot of logging operations. Logging operations that would have clear cut and then replanted an area. Perhaps even the area where the museum fire occurred. Re-planting the Forrest is something usually done by the Forrest service, and it’s pretty common. A good size group of people make a line, and walk thru the burn scar replanting trees. These new roots then grown and help stabilize the earth under this burn scar. Volunteers from the community that were hoping to avoid floods could easily give up a Saturday morning for a hike in the woods....and yes ma’am, I do work. And yes ma’am, I do raise four kids, and yes ma’am, I do volunteer my time to my community. It’s selfish people like you, who assume they work so they’ve done enough for the community, that will never go out and do something so simple. It’s temperamental people like yourself who would rather prove how right they are on the internet then get involved with the people around them to improve their surroundings. Enjoy your meaningless job, and keyboard warrior lifestyle, I’m sure someone (you) is impressed by it.

      Well considering that the burn scar happened because forest service equipment sparked the fire...they should darn well do something about it. And then the flooding that damaged that older gentleman's home was caused by the forest service overly aggressively deforesting the trees at the base of Mt. Elden. My property took on water from that as well. So YES the city of Flagstaff needs to work with the forest service and FIX the problem.

    I recommend hydraulic landscaping which appears erratic out of season, but as water flow surges downhill, the evident utility of design shoves moving water away from the residence: a hydraulic design might not be the first move when preparing for floods, but after subsequent floods, the idea starts to make sense when asking yourself if this flood management could be any easier.

    • @MonroeYohey
      @MonroeYohey 3 года назад

      If you are in a known flood zone, good luck getting insurance to cover it or have flood insurance. Most insurance have act of God stipulations and that leaves Fema or other government agencies if they cover it. You need to be ultra careful when buying to consider i pacts now but also all future potential impacts and have right pumps but that doesn’t help very much in fast moving water and debris flows. I think you need to consider the length of time you plan to live in home or until resale and how natural events may impact that plan. Of course anything can happen anytime but the likelihood if planned is greatly mitigated if you know area and all potential disaster events beforehand.

      The “desert” classification is about average rainfall, summer “monsoon” rains in the southwest can be very intense. This along with little in the way of consistent ground cover like grasses and “expansive” type soils that absorb almost no rainfall and you have the recipe for flooding of this type. I live in southern Colorado and we have similar conditions but luckily nothing quite this extreme, although a recent rain of almost 1.5” in about 12 hours had me wondering a bit 🙈

      Thus is not a normal occurrence. This is not a river, we dont have thise here on the side of our high desert mountains. This is the result od a huge rainstorm on top of a mountain that has recently suffered a forest fire and has no natural water breaks. Do you seriously think people would build an entire neighborhood in an area where this is normal???
      This storm broke a 7 year drought...that's how big it was.
      Keep your assumptions to yourself.

You'll find the evidence of Ms yrs of run offs. If you built in run off area its no ones fault but yours, or the developer, who didn't study the geography & prepare.
      Don't build in flood zones & not expect to get flooded at some point..

Just do a search on how devastating the weather is in Europe, Asia (Japan and China to be specific) and the neighboring islets near the Americas. This is the result of the earth being abuse for the mere sake of greed. America is going to pay a serious price as well as China and India, the notorious major climate polluters who keep ignoring climate change warnings.

Today they build on unstable ground, flash flood areas and hillsides prone to landslides and fires. Greed, and much of it is just a matter of time. Build a house on the top of a ridge with uncontrolled growth and sooner or later man or lightning will return to claim it's natural state.
