State of Emergency declared after widespread flooding in Cedar City

- Cars could be seen half-submerged underwater as streets throughout Cedar City flooded Monday after rain continued to roll through parts of southern Utah. The National Weather Service estimates almost two inches of rain had fallen in the city, causing basement flooding and numerous road closures.
Cedar City Mayor Maile Edwards declared a State of Emergency as widespread flooding could be seen across the area. Crews were dispatched to assess the damage, which was extensive on both public and private property
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at the church building at 900 West Center Street for those unable to stay in their homes.

No way to plan for over 2" of rain in less than an hour. I felt bad that it took out my retaining wall untill I saw these kids with 4' of water in their apartments. I can build a new wall but they lost everything.

Can't understand why so many area's flood when they get just a couple of inches of rain in a shot time. There is nothing but roads and concrete here now due to development. These areas must have really poor drainage systems.

When you think about flooding you tend to think about water, but that water is so full of mud, silt, and everything else the water picks up as it moves along that it leaves a complete mess! It's not like things can simply be dried out, they're ruined. What a mess.

i had a basement apt my sub pump stopped working and it flooded after that i got some new neighbors upstairs that were constantly making noise running around i could hear they're foot steps and hear them talking or yelling sometimes they were fighting i knocked on they're door and i said i can hear you playing ball with your dog could you keep it down when i am trying to sleep? He said we don't have a dog sir we have a cat. lol. i had to finally quit my job and abandon that apt i couldn't keep it together they drove me crazy.
Be interesting if a youtuber would go out to Powell and put a stick at the water line and see if this flood water makes the lake rise. Didn't the governor of Utah ask everyone to pray for rain.? Well he got his prayers answered in spades. Maybe adjust the prayers a little so as not to get it all at once.

Nobody likes the flash flooding , but this is definitely much needed moisture into this area.
Hopefully this will alleviate the major drought that they have been experiencing, and also greatly help the situation regarding wildfires, which they’ve been having.

Problem is, they altered the eon old nature designed water channels for development and profit. Environmental impact studies must not have been done diligently when lands were appropriated for profit. The city has a 5000 feet elevation and there were sure natural water channels existed before humans appeared in the area.
Literally just watched a news clip on how the SW U.S. is in the worst drought in 1,200 years. Now it’s flooding?
There’s more of a correlation there that you might think: healthy moist soil absorbs water. Dry soil is an excellent water blocker.
Warm air can hold more water vapor. Hot, dry land radiates heat and can create columns of rising warm air.
Greenhouse gases store the warmth and making the warm columns of air rising even more, into the colder layers of air. Even in dry circumstances this can cause condensation. Then there will be an internal flow of cold and warm air and water vapor inside of the cloud that will form and eventually this cloud will just explode from its internal energy, releasing all of its attained moisture.
That’s why storm clouds form in warm weather. As the climate is heating up these clouds are getting bigger and bigger. These downpours are so big that the water can’t even be absorbed by healthy soil, let alone dry soil.
Just look at what happened in China, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg and Germany.
