  • Cancun is by far the most popular vacation destination in Mexico, but it´s not the best. This is why you should consider Mazatlan instead of Cancun.
First, your Mexico vacation is going to be so much more affordable when visiting Mazatlan. By switching destinations, with all the money you are saving, you might be able to take 3 Mexico vacations per year instead of just one.
But, the benefits of heading over to the west coast of Mexico don´t end there. Watch this video to learn all of the reasons why there are much better choices for a Mexico vacation than Cancun.

I'm so glad that you finally made it back to Mazatlan! I moved here on my own from Canada 12 years ago and have never regretted it once. Mazatlan is a great and diverse community welcoming to everyone. And yes, while prices are significantly cheaper than the East side, those of us that live here full time have really felt the changes being brought about with the construction boom going on. Some good and others not so good. But that's progress I suppose!
If you're still here, make sure you don't miss a visit to La Isla de la Piedra. Even better beaches than in the tourist zone.

Well those high rise constructions are finally helping the Mazatlan Economy greatly. It has been desperately needed as its been like 30 plus years of their Economy in the Doldrums since that famous Cartel Boss getting gunned down in the Golden Zone, and the US Dept. of State putting MAZ. on a no go list for years and years ( all the while we knew it was safe and kept going).. Funny even though some US Navy Destroyers would put into port for R x R for their crew all during this time. You would see them at the bar of Hotel Flores in the Golden Zone. Also funny, is the incredible horrible timing of those Developers, that bought up blighted properties and turning them into High Rise Condos - they did not get the Memo! The whole World is tipping into a Depression like not seen after the French Revolution in 1789 (think Les Miserables), and most of those condos will go unsold, as most American Families do not even have $400.00 for an Emergency like a set of tires for the car and their purchasing power has dropped 13.88% Yr. over Yr. and the US Dollar will continue to drop in value as it is the intention of the Fed. Res. and US Treasury to do just that. It could go as low as 5 to 1 for while then revert more to the 70 year norm of 12 to 1! How they going to buy them, and now that housing is starting to crash in USA. Super time for Ana Fernandez to wait 2 years and pick up one of them from the Bank that takes back the Foreclosed Property and pay half original advertised price OR less. I know, that I will be in line for one.

On the Western side of Mexico things are still more authentic . The East side is beautiful with the exception of seaweed on the beaches, lot more wind and the temperature is not as nice. Cancun is also very Americanised. So, go for Cancun if you favor big resorts and Puerto Vallarta if you favor smaller boutique hotel . Either way LOVE Mexico !

I live in the Riviera Maya (I know you did too) and I so miss how it all was 10 to 15 years ago! Thank you for this video as I think it is important that people know that it is not "cheap" down here anymore. With the exponential growth and popularity of these cities (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum) it has also increased the amount of scams, drugs, robberies, shootings. Its a beautiful part of the world and my husband was born and raised here and it will always be "home." But the aggression and numbers of the taxi mafia, and how much the tourists are lied to and overcharged (by 100's of dollars!) quite honestly is so embarrassing. Lake Chapala isn’t what I thought it would be. Kind of disappointing.

I am so happy to see you finally make it to Mazatlan. I have lived here since 2016, originally from San Diego, California. I moved here after my divorce to live and restart my life. It is so inexpensive here compared to San Diego and the other main tourist areas of Mexico, like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas. The main reason I believe here is so I inexpensive to other resort areas, is that here they cater to the Mexican tourist, who is very budget conscious. They normally arrive on bus tours, so that is one of the reasons for the disparity in traffic at the airport. If you are still in town, I suggest visiting one of the palapas on the beach for some of the freshest seafood anywhere. If you like craft beer, there is Cerveceria Navegante on the malecón or Cerveceria Tres Islas near the cruise ship pier or Bichola in Zona Dorada.

Many East Coast tourist destinations only exist for tourism. That gives them a totally different vibe and gives the people a different attitude. Also, many people in the US are very worried about crime in Mazatlan. It would be nice to see some statistics comparing it to Cancun and similar size US cities as well as the percentage of crimes on tourists vs other gang members.

Buy your beer cross the malcon and put your feet in the sand all for 1/10 the cost of a beach club in the Riviera Maya. The seafood is also fresher in Mazatlan. On Playa Los Pinitos in Mazatlan a guy swims out 200M dives down harvest mussel brings them back to the beach restaurant for you to eat.

I see a lot of people saying that Mazatlan is “dead” or “boring” and that is valid argument. However, that feeling of boredom can only be felt by boring people. Mazatlan can be just as fun as any other touristy destination anywhere not just in México, but around the world. A hike to el “faro” or the lighthouse is going to give you tremendous views, specially if you go on the glass bridge. Mazatlan just expanded their aquarium, it has a professional soccer team and a great stadium, as well as professional baseball during the winter. Mazatlan has one of the best carnivals (Mardi gras) in the world, as well as a very fun Spring break season. Their “Centro Histórico” of historic downtown zone is well preserved and full of history and life!! A trip to “Isla de la Piedra” is also a very fun and affordable adventure. Kayaking, parasailing, or a ride on the Banana is also another way to create good memories!! There are many small historic towns around Mazatlan, only 25 or 30 minutes away! The City in itself is more than 400 years old and it has a lot of history. Like I said in the beginning, if you get bored in Mazatlan, that must be because you are a boring person!! 😂😂😂😂

When I thought vacation was closed to being ruined completely, on the last full day the hurricane had traveled elsewhere and the hotel staff reopened both the pool and beach. I also stayed in the same hotel as he did (a nice one at least with a comfortable room).

Dave, Mazatlan has direct flights to many US cities, including Canada. I live in Mazatlan, but am from San Diego. I fly direct to Tijuana and use the Cross Border Express Bridge that has a 5 minute walk to the US. Flights are regularly about $100 USD or less each way. Look at Viva Aerobus or Volaris. You can fly Cleveland to San Diego and visit one of America’s Finest City before flying down to Mazatlan.

While I know the “shoot ‘em up” aspect of the cartel drug scene gets a lot of press, I think people should know about the “soft powers” of the cartels, as they infiltrate legitimate business throughout Mexico (like the taxi scams in Cancun.)
