- Cancun is by far the most popular vacation destination in Mexico, but it´s not the best. This is why you should consider Mazatlan instead of Cancun.
First, your Mexico vacation is going to be so much more affordable when visiting Mazatlan. By switching destinations, with all the money you are saving, you might be able to take 3 Mexico vacations per year instead of just one.
But, the benefits of heading over to the west coast of Mexico don´t end there. Watch this video to learn all of the reasons why there are much better choices for a Mexico vacation than Cancun.

My wife and I lived in Mazatlan for 8 years, your videos bring back many good memories. If you get a chance, just give us a tour of the city etc. If we weren't so old and out of money and if we could get one of our grand kids to go with us, we would move back to Mazatlan in a minute.
I haven’t even started this yet and I am already loving it. Leaving in two weeks for MZT and cannot wait!!! It is my favorite resort town by far!! Thanks for the content!
Enjoy your time there!!
where did you stay? and any tips?
I'm so glad that you finally made it back to Mazatlan! I moved here on my own from Canada 12 years ago and have never regretted it once. Mazatlan is a great and diverse community welcoming to everyone. And yes, while prices are significantly cheaper than the East side, those of us that live here full time have really felt the changes being brought about with the construction boom going on. Some good and others not so good. But that's progress I suppose!
If you're still here, make sure you don't miss a visit to La Isla de la Piedra. Even better beaches than in the tourist zone.
Entonces ya eres Mexicana.
hi i also want to move there from Canada seems like a same story :) so can you reach me please
Well those high rise constructions are finally helping the Mazatlan Economy greatly. It has been desperately needed as its been like 30 plus years of their Economy in the Doldrums since that famous Cartel Boss getting gunned down in the Golden Zone, and the US Dept. of State putting MAZ. on a no go list for years and years ( all the while we knew it was safe and kept going).. Funny even though some US Navy Destroyers would put into port for R x R for their crew all during this time. You would see them at the bar of Hotel Flores in the Golden Zone. Also funny, is the incredible horrible timing of those Developers, that bought up blighted properties and turning them into High Rise Condos - they did not get the Memo! The whole World is tipping into a Depression like not seen after the French Revolution in 1789 (think Les Miserables), and most of those condos will go unsold, as most American Families do not even have $400.00 for an Emergency like a set of tires for the car and their purchasing power has dropped 13.88% Yr. over Yr. and the US Dollar will continue to drop in value as it is the intention of the Fed. Res. and US Treasury to do just that. It could go as low as 5 to 1 for while then revert more to the 70 year norm of 12 to 1! How they going to buy them, and now that housing is starting to crash in USA. Super time for Ana Fernandez to wait 2 years and pick up one of them from the Bank that takes back the Foreclosed Property and pay half original advertised price OR less. I know, that I will be in line for one.
is there any local snorkeling that free, does'nt need a tour?
@@Wds__99 This area really doesn't have much for divers and snorkeling. It's much too turbulent.
I prefer the west coast to the east. Something about the afternoon sun (and the sun set!) that gives it such a good atmosphere and aesthetic. Also feels much more Mexican and chill.
So the mexicans who live in the east cost are les "mexicans" than the others? And what "feels more mexican" exactly? This comlent is so messy..
So New York is less american than Sacramento?
@@mazcid177 The towns feel more Mexican and less built up for American tourists. Yes I would say Sacramento is a more typical American city than NYC. The only thing messy here is your interpretation of what I'm saying.
@@mazcid177 Really doesn't have to do with the actual Mexican people. I think what they're trying to say is that Cancun is more like a Las Vegas on the ocean. On the Western side of Mexico things are still more authentic . The East side is beautiful with the exception of seaweed on the beaches, lot more wind and the temperature is not as nice. Cancun is also very Americanised. So, go for Cancun if you favor big resorts and Puerto Vallarta if you favor smaller boutique hotel . Either way LOVE Mexico !
What the hell do you mean it feels more mexican?
@@mazcid177Cancun is full of American-style shopping malls and hotels. Nothing to do with the people
I really like your style of narrating the comparison between both cities, you are pleasant and concise. You researched thoroughly. Very good job.
Great video Jordan. I agree 100% we lived in Playa del Carmen for 5 years and still own a home there. But we now live in the central highlands. I just went back and I was so anxious about using taxis. I despise them and always have. We got tired of being on high alert constantly.
I live in the Riviera Maya (I know you did too) and I so miss how it all was 10 to 15 years ago! Thank you for this video as I think it is important that people know that it is not "cheap" down here anymore. With the exponential growth and popularity of these cities (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum) it has also increased the amount of scams, drugs, robberies, shootings. Its a beautiful part of the world and my husband was born and raised here and it will always be "home." But the aggression and numbers of the taxi mafia, and how much the tourists are lied to and overcharged (by 100's of dollars!) quite honestly is so embarrassing. You have sold me on a trip to Mazatlan!
Drove down from Canada a couple months ago, I stayed in Mazatlan for 5 days on the way down. People were so friendly there and I loved the food as well. I’m in Lake Chapala now and the people here are not that friendly and seem to have a hate on for gringos. I came here to get my temp residency card process done and then I think I will head back to Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta. I miss the ocean and being able to walk on the beach everyday. Lake Chapala isn’t what I thought it would be. Kind of disappointing.
You should visit Ajijic there a huge community of American citizens
Your right Ajiic is well - Past Tense! We have meet people fleeing from there, mainly due to the traffic on the main Blvd.. Graduate out of Gringo Gulch as soon as you can and live in REAL Mexico!
I'm glad you are traveling again. I like the Mexico travel videos the best.
Great comparison and good tips - thanks. I went to Mazatlan many years ago and have good memories of it.
Me too. We used to drive down from California across the Sonora desert (no AC) stopping in Guaymas. I especially like San Blas, farther south in Nayarit. It was a haven for hippies at one time and never really caught the tourist bug, perhaps because it does have a lot of bugs that come out at night.
Very good information. I spent a month in Cancun and a month in Mazatlan in 2022 in Air B and B’s!!! I now live in Mazatlan! I love it there!!!
I am so happy to see you finally make it to Mazatlan. I have lived here since 2016, originally from San Diego, California. I moved here after my divorce to live and restart my life. It is so inexpensive here compared to San Diego and the other main tourist areas of Mexico, like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas. The main reason I believe here is so I inexpensive to other resort areas, is that here they cater to the Mexican tourist, who is very budget conscious. They normally arrive on bus tours, so that is one of the reasons for the disparity in traffic at the airport. If you are still in town, I suggest visiting one of the palapas on the beach for some of the freshest seafood anywhere. If you like craft beer, there is Cerveceria Navegante on the malecón or Cerveceria Tres Islas near the cruise ship pier or Bichola in Zona Dorada.
Just be real your main reason is live in Mazatlan is not paying child support 😂😂😂
@@cesarm655 my “kids” were 25 and 26 at the time of the divorce, so no.
Why assume someone moves somewhere just to escape something?
Any other suggestions? I plan to be there in mid April
April 8, the eclipse in totality will be passing through
I had a layover in Cancun last year and I needed to get to another terminal in a hurry. The taxi guide tried to charge me 600 pesos just to go to another terminal that was a 5 min drive! I turned and started to walk away then he dropped the price to 300 (still a ripoff but I was in a bind). They print the prices on a laminated piece of paper to make is seem legit but it's still a scam. Going to Mazatlan in a couple weeks. Can't wait!
Superb video! I've been in Mexico the last 4 months and Cancún is my least favourite place in the country (I even made a video about it) whereas I loved Mazatlán! Such a fun town, and so much less artificial and expensive than the Riviera Maya.
Saludos.
Mazatlán is an amazing city. We’ve lived there before. The people are so friendly, and you have everything you need in this city.
Glad that the West Coast is getting some respect. A couple other things you could mention is that the West Coast towns are actual towns where regular people live their lives. Many East Coast tourist destinations only exist for tourism. That gives them a totally different vibe and gives the people a different attitude. Also, many people in the US are very worried about crime in Mazatlan. It would be nice to see some statistics comparing it to Cancun and similar size US cities as well as the percentage of crimes on tourists vs other gang members.
Yes, MAZ, just walk 3 blocks inland from the Malecon and you are in normal Mexican neighborhoods. Even PV is not like this. You want the partying and action head to the Malecon, you want relative peace and tranquility, go a few blocks inland.
Excellent video! I won't visit the Riviera Maya due to the Sargasso problem. It damn near ruined my month-long stay last May and we were forced to visit Cozumel and Isla Mujeres to find clean Beaches. Mazatlan here I come!
Thank God for Isla Mujeres. At least one can enjoy the ocean without being strangled with all the seaweed in Cancun
We loved Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos. Going to San Calos this June but now a little worried about the cartel and rental cars in Hermisillo.
@@Grandpa_RLP: Things are crazy in Mexico right now. But you know how the media likes to make a molehill into a mountain.
Thank you for this video bro. We're definitely going to have to visit. I've just driven through there way back in the day and never got to stay. I've been on the fence about it but this video just did it for me. You definitely aren't lying about the taxi cartel in Riviera Maya. If you take the ferry across to Baja please share your experience. Thanks.
The Ferry across to La Paz (there are 2 now), is very slow 8 hours plus to conserve fuel, and expensive if you take your car.

Thanks for the update. My wife and I are celebrating me living in Mexico and our mexican marriage in June. I have been looking at Cancun but it is pricey.
Wow! Another great video full of information..I love it🙂 You’re the best and I hope to visit there someday..looks lovely & peaceful..that hotel is beautiful ..really nice to watch your videos on a winter’s Saturday morning here in Michigan…dreaming😉
Thanks for talking about the mangrove issue! 🌎🥰☮
Oh we have all forgotten one of the main reasons that MAZ. feels so different, THE PEOPLE! The Sinaloan people are known to be a little bit crazy and wild fun loving people, unlike anywhere else in Mexico. They used to introduce you to that crazyness at Sr. Frogs years ago. The Sinaloans bring partying to whole new level! I salute them!
But the water is cold there....totally different areas
Thanks for the video. Another great thing about Mazatlan is that it has a charming centro historico, and it feels much more Mexican than Cancun, which I like to compare as the Mexican version of Miami Beach.
You provided all with one of the most meaningful video's that I have ever seen on youtube -- thanks. One of the networks / cable channels should show your video as a public service and that visibility would very likely go a long way to improving the situation in Cancun.
Thank you for showing more about Mazatlan! I will certainly visit there! You should check Mazunte out one day! It is not like Mazatlan but more quiet and beautiful! It is a smaller beach but very relaxing. Don’t miss Punta Cometa!
Mazatlan is a great resort city in the fall and spring (water too cold for my liking in winter). My favorite tip for saving money is there is always a convient store across from the beach. Buy your beer cross the malcon and put your feet in the sand all for 1/10 the cost of a beach club in the Riviera Maya. The seafood is also fresher in Mazatlan. On Playa Los Pinitos in Mazatlan a guy swims out 200M dives down harvest mussel brings them back to the beach restaurant for you to eat.
The water is always warmer on the Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico than it is on the Pacific side. 🫤
I messed up Jordan. I was living in Mexico for a little over 2 years and visited 23 different cities. I never did a RUclips video. Im back in the USA for a bit close to your home town. I am close to Gold Canyon. Considering heading back although my dog doesnt do well with humidity. Hes getting old. Love your videos.
I live in Mazatlan and you are right. They have the friendliest, kindest people here.
Great info. I stopped here on a cruise and felt it was the least "touristy" spot on our itinerary. More authentic Mexican experience.
Yeah Mazatlan is better than Cancun I like it too and Like a bit more: Nayarit (specially sayulita area) not vallarta area, more to the north punta mita is way nicer, and don’t miss Ixtapa in Guerrero is fantastic too.
Except for the Hurricane that just hit Acapulco, which was very rare, but your re right Tulum-Cancun areas are plagued by them, and far more expensive, and isnt the pollution or sewage problems worse on the Cancun side also ! What about Cabo S. Lucas heard it is very expensive there now ..
I'd much rather go to Mazatlan. The entire point of going on vacation is to relax!
Great video! Information was spot on for future expats. Keep us in the loop my friend. Thx for sharing. Free Agent From Washington DC
Extremely informative Jordan! Never been to Mazatlan, only to the Maya Riviera, but find it overly commercialized. Mazatlan sounds like it's much more to my liking, from all the points you stated. Safe travels!
Thank you, very informative vlog. I used to go to Cancun in the 90s. I hated walking through the airport and dealing with so many hustlers. I'm mex and I was still hustled. I want to visit Mexico but am uncomfortable with the Cartel situation. They give the country such a bad reputation. My grandparents were born in Puebla and I want to visit. Have you Made a vlog about visiting there?
Cartel is overrated. Mexico is safe if you are not in the business (or in the remote situation of being in the wrong place at the wrong time). Other than potential tourist scams, which happen everywhere, Mexico is pretty safe for tourists.
@@JoeSmith-ym5rv No. I'm not going to let you get away with that overgeneralization. Have a seat.

Puebla is my favorite Big City in Mexico. Great cuisine, with some Arab and French influences still. Those downtown colonial buildings covered in those special tiles top to bottom, and incredible Cathedral. Special flavor you feel in Puebla. Dont forget their incredible Mole(s). You can buy them by the gallon in boxes to take home and custom Liquors. And dont forget their close neighbor Cholula! Over 360 little churches and the largest base of a Pyramid in the World. No one should visit Puebla, without taking a tour of the Churchesque Churches outside of town. They come from Europe to see them every year, Some have captured as close as your every going to see of Heaven in their ceilings.

Muy cierto todo lo que dices, muy buenas observaciones, 100 % real.
I didn’t realize how important mangroves were I hope florida and Mexico will protect them
Good tips. Never been to that area, but you make good points to change that.
If you want to explore that area (NorthWest of Mexico) I highly recommend to take the ferry from Mazatlan to La Paz. You can enojoy in the Middle of the Gulf of Cortez the sunrise and the sunset with dolphins jumping aside. La Paz has beautiful beaches like Balandra which is considered the most beautiful in Mexico.
Have you thought about visiting the Cabo area? You should do a series about Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz and the surrounding areas… way more chill than Cancun or even Mazatlan!
Spending 26 days in Merida since it’s my first time leaving the USA and wanted a safe city to visit first as a solo female traveler!

Weather is always nicer and consistently sunny in Maz. Nicer beaches in cun. More historical amd traditional in maz . I like it better!!
Jordan: Shhhhhh! We have enjoyed our past five winters in Mazatlan, but it keeps getting busier!
thank you for the tips
I see a lot of people saying that Mazatlan is “dead” or “boring” and that is valid argument. However, that feeling of boredom can only be felt by boring people. Mazatlan can be just as fun as any other touristy destination anywhere not just in México, but around the world. A hike to el “faro” or the lighthouse is going to give you tremendous views, specially if you go on the glass bridge. Mazatlan just expanded their aquarium, it has a professional soccer team and a great stadium, as well as professional baseball during the winter. Mazatlan has one of the best carnivals (Mardi gras) in the world, as well as a very fun Spring break season. Their “Centro Histórico” of historic downtown zone is well preserved and full of history and life!! A trip to “Isla de la Piedra” is also a very fun and affordable adventure. Kayaking, parasailing, or a ride on the Banana is also another way to create good memories!! There are many small historic towns around Mazatlan, only 25 or 30 minutes away! The City in itself is more than 400 years old and it has a lot of history. Like I said in the beginning, if you get bored in Mazatlan, that must be because you are a boring person!! 😂😂😂😂
I'm from mazatlán, after have my life living in playa del Carmen and can cun, I just came back to mazatlán and to be honest other than the nature and pirámides this destination is so great to visit and enjoy. There aren’t less hurricanes in the west coast. I been to Mazatlan once and got hit with a big one causing hotel guests to remain in their room for about two to three days. I wish Mazatlán was a good alternative for me. Cancún is closer for us and a nonstop from Cleveland.
What you said about Cancún is right. I basically hold my nose through the unpleasant parts of going there, like arriving at the airport. I do like my free shot of tequila at the airport, though. 😉
Dave, Mazatlan has direct flights to many US cities, including Canada. I live in Mazatlan, but am from San Diego. I fly direct to Tijuana and use the Cross Border Express Bridge that has a 5 minute walk to the US. Flights are regularly about $100 USD or less each way. Look at Viva Aerobus or Volaris. You can fly Cleveland to San Diego and visit one of America’s Finest City before flying down to Mazatlan.
I stayed at the Emporio in Mazatlan for 7 days and had great time Jordan.

While I know the “shoot ‘em up” aspect of the cartel drug scene gets a lot of press, I think people should know about the “soft powers” of the cartels, as they infiltrate legitimate business throughout Mexico (like the taxi scams in Cancun.)
