  • A little trip down Memory Lane. I take a look at the old ferry Severn Princess on which I have travelled several times in the 1950's and early 1960's. She was built in 1959, decommissioned in 1999, sold to an Irish company. In 1999 she was found, sunk and full of fertiliser. Brought back to Chepstow in Wales she is now being restored.

Hello Michael, I grew up in Olveston, Glos. whilst the bridge was being built. Once the towers were halfway up I could watch the progress from my bedroom window. We used to use the ferry occasionally and it was fascinating to look up and watch the men scaling the steel matting walkways while the cables were being strung, they certainly had a head for heights and pretty much no safety equipment by modern standards.
The tide was so strong that the ferry used to cross pointing nearly upstream or downstream and effectively went sideways.
When the bridge opened we were all bussed there from school and sat on the motorway embankment above the then toll booths waving our Union Jacks and cheering HM QE2 as she declared the bridge open.
I live locally again now and think of those days every time I cross the bridge.

Fantastic TonyS. A wonderful memory to have. We lived near Reading and had Aunts & Uncles in Wales. One in Usk and another in St Braivels. The bridge is better ( I suppose) but the ferry was far more fun. Regards Michael

Interesting piece of history Michael. Love that ferry boat - looks excellent to build one in Ho scale for my layout. I've put it on my to do wish list ! Thanks for sharing & all the best, Filip

Thanks for your comment Filip. It could be an interesting model to build especially because of the turntable. I shall have to give that some thought when the time comes. Regards Michael

Nice little trip. It can be a bit of a double edged sword going back to places as often they seem to be neglected.

Hello Al. Thanks for watching. No I don't know how long it will be but I get the impression quite some time. I know they have got the turntable working again. I tried to contact them so as to get more info and a better look but they never got back to me. Shame. Regards Michael
