  • I take you on a tour of my English Garden - highlighting all the plants in flower which have a lovely scent and powerful fragrance during the month of May. I feature deciduous azaleas both in my garden and a spectacular local botanical gardens.
My English Garden is near the coast in North West England, 1/3 of an acre (including the house) Zone 9a with sandy soil.

Your azaleas are wonderful! Here in the states everyone prunes them into shrubs. They become sparse ugly things. I swore off them years ago because you can see them everywhere, poor things. I think I will start a collection because of you. Thank you, Paul!💗

I am glad to see your happy face again! AND those azaleas are gorgeous! Are you like me and every time you walk past a sweet smelling shrub or flower you must stop and smell it SEVERAL times? I always have to have more than one sniff! I am so glad that you allow your shrubs to do their own thing for the most part. Thank you for the wonderful show and keep us up to date, Paul.

Just found your channel and I’m loving it so much. Your Mexican orange blossom is magnificent. I took cuttings from my nans garden, she passed away last year. I drove 5 hours just to collect her plastic empty pots and try and take cuttings from her garden. I had no idea what that plant was and now I know! I don’t think the cuttings with take as I wasn’t sure how to take them from her plants. She had a camellia in full bloom. The orange blossom you have. I think possibly a rhododendron and a hydrangea. Other things too. Your garden reminds me off my nans, hers was only small but beautiful garden. Your garden is just outstanding, do you open it to the public? I’m in South Wales. It’s so full of colour. I love how you show the plants tiny and then when growing months later. It has helped me identify seeds I grew and the writing had worn off the stick I’d labelled them with. Goodness me, your garden is a masterpiece! I have only one rhododendron (azalea?) which looks so bad that I wouldn't dare to show it in public; to be honest, I might have to get rid of it sooner or later. My over 130 roses are going to flower a little bit later than yours; right now I am waiting for rain and getting more and more desperate by the minute. My garden is turning into a desert.

Hmmm, still no rain. Disappointing and very surprising. Yes, with all those new plants and transplants you have to be diligent with the watering. Hi Paul, I tried to send you links of plants , obviously it was blocked. Have you had daphne odorata " marginata' ( love this variety), Sweet Pera vine, Ornamental ginger plant, Heliotrope ( smells like vanilla). Daphne is prized for its amazing fragrance ( you would never forget once you have it!)and it blooms during later winter/early spring when most of the plants are just about to begin their growth!! In my area, San Francisco, spring is nearly eternal, I started sweet pea bedding plants in winter, spring and summer. Enjoy immensely its spicy fragrance till late fall!!

      Hi Kim,
Yes, I think RUclips blocks links. That's interesting you mention daphne. I actually bought one last year, but for some reason it is struggling so I am going to move it as I really want it to do well - I want to experience its famous scent! Thank you for that suggestion. That's a great growing climate you have over on the West Coast.

Good afternoon Paul - here is morning foggy, dripping wet, plants love it and I love it too! If I remember correctly, Daphne can be precarious , it can die on you for no apparent reason! From my observation over the years, it is quite hardy once established. Iyt can withstand neglect, drought tolerant, as we don't have rain during growing season, at least nine months. Wish you good luck!
