The setting marvelously re-creates the now almost vanished world of isolated crews of men - seamen, loggers, soldiers, railwaymen, miners, surveyors - that so many shared and served in for longer or shorter periods of their lives in centuries now gone by.

That was a time when folk was changing. It had been about singing the songs of the past, the folk memory. Bob Dylan showed it was about the present. He wrote his own folk songs. Although 'the Girl from the North Country' was, indeed, Dylan's song, 'Strawberry Fair' was Simon and Garfunkel's version of a traditional song. There are many examples of influence and sharing of words and lines from one folk singer to another. The songs of my youth; i was eleven at the beginning of the sixties.

"She once was a true love of mine" the line is in Girl From The North country. The same line is in Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel. I pointed this out to Bob Johnston. He said only I would notice that because I'm a Wordsmith. I saw the studio logs from Nashville Skyline. Every song on that album was done on the first take except for two which were done on the second take. I told Johnston that Dylan was so good that anybody could have recorded him. Johnston said to me " I did it and I didn't fuck it up." I said "Oh my God that's the perfect answer." We both started laughing because it's the truth. To capture the artist and let the artist be themselves is what recording is all about. Bob Johnston recorded Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel and did a good job with both of them.

    [Verse 1]
If you’re travelin' in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she once was a true love of mine
    [Verse 2]
If you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see she has a coat so warm
To keep her from the howling winds
    [Verse 3]
Please see if her hair hangs long
If it rolls and flows all down her breast
Please see for me if her hair's hangin' long
For that’s the way I remember her best
    [Verse 4]
I’m a-wondering if she remembers me at all
    Many times I’ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night

Miming? Well in that case he's the world's best mimic.
If Bob's pulling off this level of mime as a kid back in '64... then even more props to the 'Dyl'.. However... this is only a small segment of a 30 minute program of Bob serenading a CBC Bunkhouse full of miners and loggers... Notable is that 23 year old Bob is so poised and professional and handling the pressure or live TV. ... that's amazing and unheard of today! ] Cheers from Vancouver!
