Tried a different approach to making this simple piece to see if it was viable - using an annular cutter instead of a drill. Worked out fine for a quick low tolerance job. ( www.oldmansshop... )
Good to hear you again, even if it is for a short time that you can bear. I've been curious about these annular cutters as to what sorts of advantages they have and to be honest I've mostly held back due to the price. They seem to cut like no one's business!
Hi Everett - thanks. Well, only a quick shop visit but worked out OK. I got an import set of annular cutters and must say I have been well pleased with them so far. Not sure about longevity but use is fairly occasional so hope they'll do for some time. There are times when those are better than ordinary hole cutters I think. All best to you and yours for the holidays. :)
Chris my sympathies on the shop temperature from one half-froze old man to another. I have had good luck with the annular cutters, not the best choice for everything but for the right jobs you can''t beat them.
Thanks Steve - well, the back (and the cold) still a big limiting factor but ever hopeful to get to some shop time again. All best to you and yours for 2019. :)
Hi Chris, Good to see you in the shop ! l hope you have a good Christmas. Not so warm in the UK at the moment, I stay out of the shop at this time of the year. As any bare metal surfaces you touch, just flash rusts. (only a greenhouse tube heater for heat, set for 7oc). All the best Adam
Hi Adam, Yes, nice to get into the shop even if not for long. Our cold temps started crazy early and do in part limit me for shop time - and also as you mention, flash rusting is a real problem sometimes. Seems we often have to cope with one extreme or the other! All best to you and yours for a Happy Christmas. :)
Annular cutters are great to many jobs, they save time and power, all they require is a solid based tool... Stay warm and Happy Holydays to you and the mrs... ;)
Hya Chris was getting worried not seen you for a while . Sorry the back ie standing is still giving you GIP . Hope you haver a goog christmas and a happy new year Maurice
That worked great despite the parting off trouble. I noticed, there was no smoke coming off the operation. What are you using for cutting fluid? I've just run out and am looking for a change from what I've been using. Great to see you in the shop again! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Hi Dave, Thanks. My cutting fluid is the remains of what I have used for ever "Sulphcut" - sulfur based stuff I had back in the UK - it does very well though it can smoke a bit sometimes with heavy cuts. Not sure what is out there as similar but I think there is quite a wide choice. Back at you with Season's greetings :)
Hi - well, this is a case where the annular cutter does a better job I think than a regular hole cutter. It seemed worth a try and turned out quite well. ATB :)
I always enjoy watching. I hope your back didn't cause you too much trouble bending over your lathe. Merry Christmas Chris. Give my best to the lady of the house. :-)
Hi there Jim, Thanks for dropping by - well, the work was fairly quick so standing was bearable, just! I have a piece I want to work on in the mill, which is mainly sitting but - temps are silly cold and I think I've got a bit of a cold so feeling a bit off for now. Happy Christmas back to you, and yours Jim - best for new year too.
I think I can understand how cold it is when you are trying to work out there. I've worked in the rain and cold when I was a jet engine mechanic when I was younger and it hurt then too. Stay warm and eat some chicken noodle soup, it might help. Stay well, all the best.
That sure can help but another factor is in part the cold within the machinery - particularly with the mill where the column gets real heavy to operate. Of course too - keeping hands warm and gloves not always easy or deal with loss of touch sense.
Hi John - I can sit when milling but just can't make that work at the lathe unfortunately - have tried it. Perhaps I can apply for a sky hook :-) All best.
Annular cutters do a really nice job. Have a Merry Christmas Chris and hope your back gives you less trouble next year. ATB~ Richard
Hi Rich - yes. it worked out well. All best back to you, including also hopes for 'things' to resolve for you. :)
Great to see you back in the shop mate, I’d like to wish you and all your family a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy new year, cheers Matty
Hi Matty,
Thanks. Hope to still manage the occasional shop spell. All best to you and yours for the holidays :)

Thanks - Merry Christmas right back at you - :)

Hello John.
As far as temps go we always seem to be caught by extremes - too darned hot or frozen nutz!! All the best :)
The annular cutter worked great, for making the spacer. Good to see you. Stay warm.
All best to you for the holidays - thanks for dropping by. :)
@@ChrisB257 - May you have a Happy Christmas, and a very Merry New Year, but not overly MERRY! LOL All the best to you in 2019.
That sure did the job, Chris..and it did save some steps. Hope to chat soon and Merry Christmas! :-)
Hi Dale, Thanks. Season's greetings for you and Kim and indeed, look fwd to a chat soon. ATB. :)

There's another use for annular cutters...good job Chris. Merry Christmas to you and yours! John
Hi John - thanks. Merry Christmas right back at you. :)
Excellent Chris. That tool was cutting well. Hope your back improves.....Have a great New Year! All the best Steve.
Thanks Steve - well, the back (and the cold) still a big limiting factor but ever hopeful to get to some shop time again.

Hey Pierre - I was pleased with how that came out I must say - saved removing a load more material.
Happy Christmas back at you my friend. :)
Merry Christmas Chris hope you and your family have a good one
Thanks Tony - and wishes right back at you and yours :)
Hya Chris was getting worried not seen you for a while . Sorry the back ie standing is still giving you GIP . Hope you haver a goog christmas and a happy new year Maurice

Merry Christmas to you and your family. Have a happy New Year
Thanks Gus and back at you - ATB. :)
Those annular cutters are very nice but every time I bid on some at an auction they get above my pay grade.
Same for me Harold, one thing I don't have yet.
Hi Harold, well the ones I have are imports but have to say so far, they are holding up pretty good. Merry Christmas to you Boss Lady :)
Thats a good hole saw.

enjoyed.....have a merry christmas
Thanks Chuck - Season's greetings to you and yours :)
Hey Chris. Try welding something to heat the shop? ;-)
Have a great Christmas.. :)
Hey Colin - now there's a thought - some nice long stick beads perhaps that I can do sitting.:)
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
@@ChrisB257 Rather than heating the whole shop you could just pack on a few of those heating pad of one sort or another.
That sure can help but another factor is in part the cold within the machinery - particularly with the mill where the column gets real heavy to operate. Of course too - keeping hands warm and gloves not always easy or deal with loss of touch sense.
@@ChrisB257 Well, the BEST SOLUTION is to buy more machinery and stock to fill the air space so there's less air to heat. ;-)
Hey Chris you're gunna catch me up.... same thing really. 😎👍
Hi Dave - thx for dropping by. All best for Xmas and New Year. :)
Use a stool to sit on while operating machines, that might help. This is what I have to do.
Hi John - I can sit when milling but just can't make that work at the lathe unfortunately - have tried it. Perhaps I can apply for a sky hook :-) All best.
