  • 12 Top Tips: On the day of your LAMDA acting exam:
    1. Avoid dairy products the day of your exam (dairy can clog the throat and prevent you from sounding clear)
    2. Conduct a full vocal warm up: face, tongue, jaw etc and recite tongue twisters.
    3. Smile as your enter the room - it makes you appear more confident (!)
    4. Greet your examiner - say good morning/afternoon or hello. If you can obtain the examiner’s name from your teacher and feel brave enough say good morning Ms…
    5. Stand still and straight as you introduce yourself and your pieces - This again makes you appear confident and prepared.
    6. Set any staging and props you need BEFORE you give your formal introduction.
    7. If it is appropriate for your piece ensure your first line gets your head and face out to the front, not only does this promote confidence it also lets the examiner get an immediate feel for your character.
    8. Hold your finishing position for four seconds or beats before releasing.
    9. Take three deep breaths before entering the room (oxygen calms you down and helps you focus). Take a deep breath in and out before each piece too.
    10. Take a sip of water just before you enter the room - it keeps you hydrated which is brilliant for both concentration and vocal clarity.
    11. During your knowledge questions if your feel like you are waffling and have given your point(s) then ask the examiner a question such as:
Would you like like me to explain further / elaborate?
Or Would you like to know more? That way you are more likely to be able to tick the box for both being concise and giving appropriate detail.
    12. Don’t be thrown if your examiner asks at the end of the exam ‘is there anything you’d like to add?’ They have to do this just to check, don’t panic it doesn’t mean that you’ve forgotten something.
    Good Luck!

This is literally so helpful, I have my exam tomorrow and I feel SUPER stressed about it even though I have fully prepared for it and ran it through for just about a few million times with my mum. Is there any good way to relieve stress before an exam, or like any thing that can help with it? Thank you so much for this, I don't get why this only has such few likes.

So glad this is helpful. Best of luck with your exam. I know it can feel very stressful and I have some videos on coping with ‘stage fright’ and also actor relaxation…I’ll post the links…

Thank you soo much! I have my exam soon and its really helpful for all these tips
Do you have an efficient way to memorise certain tricky lines?

You are so welcome! Really glad this is helping you. I would drill the lines you find tricky - (speed) chant them over and over until they are in the muscles of your mouth (!) then you can slow back down and concentrate on the acting and making the lines sound like your character is saying them for the fist time and means what they are saying. And remember to make links between sentences. Have the thought process of the character within the full stops and commas. Best of luck 😃

My exam is on Tuesday and I’m just wondering whether the questions for the first piece is in between the two pieces or after them both

Great question, it’s usually after both. That’s been the case for all of my students for the last 6 years at least. Remember, prepare, relax, be yourself, stay confident and listen to the examiner’s instructions / questions. That way it doesn’t matter when they ask them 👍🏻
