  • Are you hyped for Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers? Well, I'm not. A bit curious to see it, perhaps, but that's it. But why is that? How is it possible that the update to one of the most famous fighting games is anything but wonderful news? Stick around and I'll tell you the problem with USF2

    I don't think it was any challenge to adapt the hitboxes since they didn't change the characters' art, only redrew it upscaled.
    The big problem is that they had to keep the choppy animation and it's is VERY noticeable with that level of detail.
    A proper upgrade would require new animation frames but that would demand new hitboxes.

    Here's one HUGE HUGE flaw all these years after release.
    No old mode characters, no old ST like mode. No turbo feature at all.
    Both "new" characters were just reskins. Also no bonus stage was just a shame
    I'd rather take a Hyper Fighting port.

      Not to mention the online play is terrible because EVERYONE HAS to use wifi. Not to mention the evil shotos are more broken than expected. Evil Ryu has very fast fireballs and it only takes 4 to kill. Violent Ken has an instant, fullscreen, projectile immune dash that CAN crossup if its chosen to. Not to mention both forms are basically plus when their dragon punches are blocked... And Akuma is Akuma, impossible to balance in almost any old game.

    I remember that even on that Neo-Geo Pocket Color SNK vs. Capcom fighting game, they gave Evil Ryu a different stance from Ryu. Every character pretty much only had one color in their design outside of black and white, but they still managed to make Evil Ryu not just be a palette swap.
    Yet, in this game, they apparently can't do that.

    I think they should have put Evil Ryu, Violent Ken, and Akuma into their own separate playmode separate from the main cast. Basically a broken character mode for fun, and put in a few broken versions of other characters as well. Like Shin Bison for instance, and perhaps versions of Chun, Guile, and Gief that reference Shadow Lady, Shadow and Mech Zangief. That would have added something actually new to the game without flooding online play with broken characters.

      He makes a lot of assumptions about Nintendo fans and the Switch. He talks about how the Switch controller won't work for the game, yet its very close to being a normal controller. He ignores that there are many other options for controller as well, along with a pro controller or the Hori fight stick, both of which are already announced and confirmed to come during launch or near launch. He claims that Nintendo fans don't care about fighting games, yet 3 Nintendo games were featured at EVO last year. He gets dislikes for not doing proper research and spreading misinformation.

    I agree! To try to release a 20+ year old game enhanced with assets from 10 years prior, and then selling it at almost full price and passing off palette swaps as brand new characters is demonstrates greediness in CAPCOM. This game was not made of love like the SF games of yesteryear. Capcom killed Rockman. Capcom killed Breath of Fire. Might as well as go ahead and put Street Fighter out of its misery. RIP Street Fighter.

Considering street fighter is returning to Nintendo where it first met success, I wouldn't be surprised if it has just as much success

    • @Ai-fj1dc
      @Ai-fj1dc 7 лет назад +4

      ドクター・フー ? Not really. In those Pokémon / FF games, they're using new assets (for example, the upcoming FFVII remake will be completely different from the original one on PSX). He's talking about USFII using the same assets they used in SFII, which is complete lazyness.

    • @Ai-fj1dc
      @Ai-fj1dc 7 лет назад +3

      nicholas bearden you're wrong. If SFII met success on SNES, it was because the game was bundled twice with the console in two different versions (Classic and Turbo) and because the PSX wasn't out. But when the PSX came out in 1994 (1995 in USA / Europe), Capcom instantly moved on it because they knew they could make almost arcade-perfect ports like Darkstalkers 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3 (which is even better on PSX than in its arcade version) or Super Street Fighter II Turbo on this console because of its superior resolution and of the CD format, and they did it again when the Dreamcast came out so they could easily develop Capcom vs SNK 1 & 2 on Naomi and port them on Dreamcast because it's the same system (just think of the Naomi being a Dreamcast but for arcades) or port some games like Street Fighter III 3rd Strike or SSFIIT's and Darkstalkers 3's perfect ports.
      Nowadays, most fighting game players are on PC / PS4 because of Street Fighter V and Mortal Kombat XL and some of them are on XONE because of Killer Instinct. The only true Nintendo fighting game that is used in tournaments is Smash 4 (even if Pokkén tried too), and its players are really different of SF / MK / KI players because SF-like games and Smash-like games are too different.
      The reason Capcom came back on Nintendo consoles ? I don't know. I guess Nintendo paid them for that, because otherwise Capcom would release USFII on PlayStation Store / Xbox Store, like SSFIITHD did on PSN / XBLA because they know that most fighting games enthusiasts are on these consoles (and most Smash players are Nintendo fans, not true fighting games players).
      USFII won't bring PS4 / PC / XONE players on Switch... Capcom already tried to release a fighting game on recent Nintendo consoles (Tatsunoko vs Capcom's port on Wii, and SSFIV3D on 3DS), but it wasn't a very big success, especially compared to SFIV on PS3 / X360. Also, SSFIITHD didn't sell well on XBLA / PSN, so I don't see why USFII would sell better.

      Street Fighter is not dead (SFV is a success). But on every other point in your cment I couldn't agree more. Even if I think that Capcom is not only greedy, but also veeeery lazy.

    long time Street fighter fan here. I felt the same way when I played the HD Remix on XBox360. I couldn't pin point it at the time but I could tell a couple of things on the new sprites was off. it's definitely the hit boxes. I also don't like the HD versions. Chun-li eyes seem to have an awful eyeliner makeup job and Ryu looks like he has cat whiskers for some reason. also (atleast for the XB360) switching to the classic sprites didn't work too well either. the stages stayed HD and the charters looked stretched and extremely pixelized.

    It's weird that all the wonderful artists working at Capcom couldn't add some sprites to ERyu and VKen, and couldn't be bothered to fix some of the more terrible Udon sprite frames. Look at the amazing uprezzed character select/VS art, an artist(s) did that. They couldn't touch up the sprites? Dropping the O. characters is terrible as well. They could have and should have made this the ultimate SSF2 game, but it looks like dumpware cashing in on old people nostalgia

      Just stick to MAME. "Remasters" are rarely truly impressive (Turok 2 Remaster was an exception) and console ports of arcade games are usually watered down, diluted etc. I'd have fun playing this on local (aka real) multiplayer for about an hour but I'd never pay for it, based on what I see here. PS3 port of SF3:3rd Strike on the other hand was much better (felt worth the £6 I paid) even though I already got the "real" SF3 on MAME for free. I'd also love a game like Vampire Savior 3 or Darkstalkers 4.
      As a lot of people are saying, there's a lot of other games they could've revived that'd be way better than SF but hey, its up to them if they wanna keep rereleasing the same old tired SF games every 2 weeks rather than actually sitting down and actually MAKING a game, a NEW game. I know they can do it because Dragons Dogma was 1 of the best action RPGs of the last 10 years, but its like they forgot they even made that game, so fuck it LOL.

    When many of us were first introduced to Ultra Street Fighter II, we were under the initial anticipation that this would basically be Hyper with many elements from HD Remix brought to the forefront, and it's an honest shame that we were wrong to think that: At its core, Ultra is a restructuring of Super Turbo, and the presumed reason for it being a Switch Exclusive was primarily to promote the console's Motion Control capabilities in the form of its Way of the Hado minigame; this is what I believe is the sole reason for why it never saw a release elsewhere (though PlayStation VR and Oculus setups of the time would've benefited from this had Capcom even considered them at the time), WotH needed to have been its own game and I wholly feel that this is what hurt its overall quality over time.
    Now, I have stated on a few occasions that we may very well see Capcom make up for this at some point, wishfully for a future Anniversary entry: The tier after Ultra is Ultimate, and I truly do believe that there will come a time where we will get Ultimate Street Fighter II, allowing for us to have the true Definitive Experience while also being able to play as every iteration of every character, have every rebalancing effort in one place, and also get to view unique cutscenes and listen to every soundtrack from every build of every version (this would mean every console/handheld port, especially since certain mixes on certain sound chips truly sound pleasant, though this may be up to PC mods to take on if Capcom feels such a concept is too complex); although Hyper was recently (finally!) re~released as part of Capcom's most recent Fighter Compilation (at the time of typing), there is no contest that many fans will probably want an Ultimate update to serve as a proper sendoff to many decades of reworking Street Fighter II for the ever~evolving community, it's the final missing piece of the puzzle and it truly would recreate the impact that Hyper successfully gave us all the way back in 2003 in a new light.

    If you're on PC and play 2D fighters, look into Reshade. Can't recommend it enough. The CRT filter is excellent. With some tweaking (changing res to at least 2, messing with brightness, etc.) you can have low-res 2D looking fanastic on modern displays. I personally combine the CRT filter with the Colourfulness filter. Gives me good results.

    The UDON graphics are fugly, like some kind of cheesy Saturday morning cartoon. Capcom should have gone with CPS2 graphics only.
    But the biggest crime here is that there are NO new backgrounds and NO new fighters. They had more than 20 years time and all we get is palatte swap sprites. Extremely disappointing and a slap in the face for long time fans of SFII.

    Oh.... They went in the option and zoomed up the scale... The characters aren't even Axis'd properly. The frames of Animation jumpy and all over the place.. They couldn't have did better than this?.. But like seriously.. what did you expect from Capcom?

  • @BainesMkII
    @BainesMkII 6 лет назад +1

    I don't give Udon credit for its HD sprites. They quite simply were not qualified for the job. They did not understand even basic details of drawing for animation, which led to many problems. They produced inconsistent art that could not be properly animated. They didn't understand human anatomy, which both looked bad and caused more inconsistency issues. At times they didn't even understand what pose a sprite was portraying. Eventually heads were cut-and-pasted from Street Fighter Revival art, even when the positions didn't match the SF2 sprite. While the original plan was for Udon to create only keyframes, with the bulk of the work being outsourced to an overseas studio, Udon's keyframes were useless. (Backbone/Sirlin tried to claim it was because the Udon art was too high quality for the overseas studio to handle, but it had already been long evident from the months of posted development images that Udon's art was simply too inconsistent to use as keyframes.) HD Remix was a development trainwreck, and hiring Udon was a big part of the cause of that wreck. (But not the only part.)

    • @cammyplayer
      @cammyplayer  6 лет назад

      Can't be easy to match new HD sprites to old art and hitboxes, though. I think it's fair to give them some leeway

    • @BainesMkII
      @BainesMkII 6 лет назад +1

      It isn't as easy as creating original sprites, but most of Udon's problems were created by Udon itself. Udon was composed of comic book artists, not animators. As stated before, Udon did not put a focus on how the sprites would animate together, instead effectively drawing separate pieces of art. They didn't realize what they were getting into and did not have the necessary experience for the task, which led to costly and time consuming *avoidable* mistake after mistake.
      For example, rather than match the original art style, they decided to not only use the Alpha art style, but also to actively try to force Alpha body builds to fit even in cases such as Bison and Sagat where the Alpha build did not match the SF2 dimensions.
      I've mentioned several consistency issues, and I didn't even touch several other consistency and anatomy issues. (Like messing up T.Hawk's pose because they didn't understand his hand position, or drawing background objects out of scale.) If you've only seen the final product, then you've missed some of the worst evidence. In-development art was often posted to a promo thread on Shoryuken, where it was often met negatively, with various posters going through the trouble to break down exactly what was wrong with each Udon piece. People repeatedly warned of the animation troubles the project would eventually realize if issues were not addressed. Some even did breakdowns and mock-ups to show how the art should be corrected, and some even did their own (more accurate, if not as skilled) example sprites from scratch. Backbone/Udon were slow to respond, but did eventually make some changes to the most egregious cases, while simultaneously not really showing that they'd learned any lessons. This was further exposed in the public beta, which was met with widespread criticism over how Ryu "twitched" (the actual term was a bit less PC) between poses. Which, again, happened because Udon drew the frames as separate pieces without considering how they'd need to flow into each other. This, too, led to touching up existing sprites, and Udon finally seemed to catch on that it was something that they had to care about.

I can't imagine many old school gamers forking out for a switch and pro controller plus game just for a trip down memory lane when so many other versions and even emulators exist. The original game still looks beautiful after all these years, a true classic of its time! Capcom should consider some HD treatment on SF3 Third Strike and SF Alpha in addition to this.

    The worst problem of Ultra Street Fighter II is this:
    - while the HD remix graphics are as good as ever, the regular ones do not have a CRT filter applied to them and thus they look like pixelated CRAP on the Switch.
    The 30th anniversary edition of the same game does feature a GREAT CRT TV filter which makes them appear smooth and arcade-like.
    *Go and buy the 30th anniversary edition for the PC - it's the best rendition of the game available. Trust me.*

  • @rolanalberto3064
    @rolanalberto3064 6 лет назад +1

    The last reason basically sums up what I think about this game. It's been a year now and no one ever spoke a word about this game anymore. At least where I'm from, anyway. I'm pretty sure this ones heading to bargain bins early. It really is just like TvC where it creates small buzz for (in this case) a year and it fizzles out after. Capcom should really stop doing stuff like this if they expect us to like their product. While I do think the Switch is a great console-hybrid, I really dont see it suitable for fighting games.
    Also I'm not 100% sure about this but I heard Nintendo or some 3rd party company made arcade sticks for the Switch now but its too little too late at this point :(

    The absolute worst part of this game is the price. It's $40, for a very old game with a few new bells and whistles. If it were in the $15-$20 range, it would be in impulse buy territory. I really don't get the complaint about this being a Switch exclusive, it's basically the same game as HD remix, only with violent ken and evil ryu added in.
    Also, Tatsunoko vs Capcom on the Wii, you do realize you can play that with a classic controller,SNES classic controller, or the arcade stick. So the Wiimote pooint is flawed.

    • @cammyplayer
      @cammyplayer  7 лет назад +1

      About TvC, well, obviously. The point is that you shouldn't have to buy a specific controller.
      About switch, here's why. What do fighting game fans like to play? Marvel vs Capcom, Mortal Kombat, The King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Tekken, Injustice, etc. So what consoles do they have? Xbox One or Playstation 4. Therefore, the switch is the worst console when it comes to reach those people. Can you have both? Yes. Is that something that the majority of people do? No.

    • @dizzy4dayz
      @dizzy4dayz 7 лет назад +1

      And thiats part o the reason why Nintendo console owners get pissed off, there's little variety on their systems simply because people buy these games on other consoles. Not every can afford to have 2 consoles, or a console and gaming pc
      I can't really see why it's such a bad thing for this to be on the Switch when you can play what is essentially the same game on the PS3 and XBOX360. All HD remix is missing is two palette swaps and a crappy first person mini game, that's it.
      I have Tatsunko vs Capcom, although it's fun to play, I wouldn't exactly put it up there as one of the classcs. It was made specificly as an entry level fighter, which is obvious by the fact it's a bit slow andit doesn't exactly havea complex move set compared to the other fighters you mentioned.
