- Chet Atkins and Paul Yandell (from Mayfield, Ky) on various live performances. Chet is seen using a Epiphone Country Gentleman (I think) and a Herco thump pick. Paul played with Chet for many years. These videos were originally recorded on VHS tape and then transfer to DVD many years later.
I'm a Chet Atkins fan and always will be. But the first song in this video shows just how versatile and underrated Paul Yandell is as a guitarist. 90% of the cool licks were done by him. That's the cool thing about Chet. He recognized the greatness in other musicians.

True about Paul, But No one had Chets Tone! Many players play his tunes note for note but still Can't get his tone!
Paul is only underrated for those that are under educated and under informed.

Paul Yandell is one of the greatest unsung players. So unassuming. He could do it all, but he was the best support player/guitar orchestrator. Keef calls it weaving. And Yandell knew how to knit it into the tightest weave you ever heard.
i wonder - did he not get the CGP nod from Chet bc Chet thought it would be insulting to him? It would be like giving Maxwell a nobel prize in physics- it would literally be beneath him
Yandell laid down many of the cool electric riffs for the Louvin Brothers.

First time I saw Chet playing an Epiphone.
I was at a CAAS convention in Nashville at which Chet said it's not the guitar but the touch.

Epi’s were preferred by many for years. it’s an interesting story and there is a reason people like Lennon said it was his favorite guitar and jazz guys loved them .Great ears always find the great instruments.
Paul was the perfect accompaniment for Chet! A true CGP!!!
I think I read Chet's daughter made Paul a CGP after Chet passed away.

Is that a custom finish? I need that guitar. Looks like probably shoreline gold and candy apple red. Never seen a strat with this kind of finish.
Chet and Paul can certainly play them all on those old Gretch guitars they super stars as they play those super songs they stand upon the musical throngs .So chet and Paul play your best u can meet any musical test!!
yeah i don’t think there is anything they couldn’t play. if they wanted to, they could jazz it legit and put Pass to shame were they so inclined

While I am the first one to admit how great Chet was this whole jacuzzi jazz era just doesn't do it for me.
It is unfortunate that many of the best videos come from the period he was recording some of the "new" music.
Chets ‘golden’ era had passed by this time- but when you listen to eg., Workshop, Hollywood, 3Dimensions, HiFi in Focus, Fingerstyle etc., These were the mark of the man that will always be remembered...

George Harrison bought a gretsch country gentleman guitar because of Chet Atkins ! So chet Atkins had something to do with the sound of the early Beatles!
George discovered Chet through a recording of Trambone by Duane Eddy that Chet played on.
The biggest influence on George was Eddie Cochran when he toured the uk. George and the beatles used to follow him.around . Eddie played a gretsch 6120 and played chet tunes also back in 1960

My goodness, Love the Mr. Bojangles bit. It brought tears to my eyes!
Starts with the Epiphone, plays Gibson's Classic Electric nylon string, Gibson Tennessean, Gibson Country Gentleman among others. His deal with Gibson led to him using different guitars for his appearances in a promotional sense. He recording with his 1959 Gretsch Country Gentleman almost exclusively when it came to electric guitars. Used a Brazilian Delvecchio resonator guitar forever, had a classical made by Hascal Haile (local builder in Tennessee I believe, not sure of the state actually) that he recorded extensively. Then Kirk Sand made the nylon classic electric that he used until he died, and was the basis of the Gibson production model but a much nicer guitar. He played various Gretsch's over the years. The Super Axe which had built in effects, the Gretsch Super Chet which was supposed to be a high end guitar. Gretsch started going downhill and after Fred Gretsch died, Chet moved to Gibson (due to his loyalty to Fred Gretsch) for his endorsements. That 1959 CG was and is a spectacular guitar. The re-issue that was basically a clone is quite nice as well.
Gretsch CG 59 sure had the sound! I never care much for the Gibson humbucker sound on their CG and I bought one anyway..go figure. One day I'll put some TV Jones p/u's in it..they're very good quality and sound..I put a set in my gretsch anniversary.

I have an Epiphone Chet Atkins model right now. The thing I noticed first , the neck is a bit narrower than a standard classic.
Would love to see a photo of it!
Chet regularly used his thumb to fret bass notes. Something Jimi Hendrix is erroneously claimed to have done first. Wouldn't surprise me if that's what led to a narrower neck.
@@vapeymcvape5000 I would say Merle Travis was the first notable player to fret with the thumb. He hardly ever used barred chords. A big influence on Chet, of course.
Paul was so tight which allowed Chet to soar.

He Used a Gibson Country Gentleman :)
The Epiphone he's playing on some of these are made by Gibson.
It was an Epiphone in that first song. He was most likely contractually required to promote these as well, since Gibson was making both.
Later he plays a Gibson Tennessean which was a lower level guitar that Gibson made with his name. Contracts.
I played a whole bunch of Gibson Country Gentleman guitars and never found one that sounded too good for my playing. Probably didn't have the right touch?
And if I'm not terribly mistaken.. the "Country Gentleman" is a Gretch

It's an arthritis glove, which tells us that Chet had some arthritis problems in his left hand in his older years (as I do, too, a long-time Chet-style guitar player).

Some very good guitarists may be able to play the guitar better than Chet did, but any great guitarists will never be able to create music with their guitars as great as Chet did.
better? interesting. like who? Certain very unique players like Stanley Jordan or Pat Metheny could give him a run for his money but conventional techniques wouldn’t come close. Maybe Michaelangelo Batio could make him say uncle haha
For a guy who is Chet's right hand man he sure seems to keep Yandell in the background-strange...

I met Paul after one of Chet's concerts in London and got the impression that he wasn't a guy who particularly craved the limelight. He played guitar with Chet for 25 years and probably knew Chet's early arrangements better than Chet did himself.
I read once--Paul himself saying that he knew his place as Chets guy. He did not ever try to upstage him--but I do see plenty of times when Chet deferred to Paul--tossed him some bones. Chet more that fair.
This is completely a false premise. Chet didn’t keep Paul in the background. He was Chet’s accompanist. Paul straightened out a few on this kind of idea.
He said he had his dream job working for Chet.
I didn't actually know him personally but from what I have observed over all the years of Paul playing with Chet he was actually even more introverted than Chet was. Miss them both!

the first song is cosmic square dance. he did this in an album with mark knopfler, but in my opinion this live version with Paul is better.

The strat was a Fender, you can catch a glimpse fo the logo at 2:02. Paul's Peaver had a strat neck though.
