That's so Japanese! ANA Pushback, Bow and a Goodbye wave at Seattle

  • Now this is why I am huge on Japan and its culture. While the ANA 787 pushes back, Gate agents at Seattle position themselves next to the plane on the tarmac. As the plane gets ready to taxi out a simple yet beautiful bow is performed followed by a Goodbye wave. Hats off to ANA, no wonder people love Asian carriers compared to the US.

When people think of Japan, they think it is just technologically advanced. But Japan is really civilisationally advanced. It is right up there. It is in a league of its own. Experienced it first hand while visiting Japan.

This is awesome. Technically in the aviation world it's completely unnecessary, but the fact that Japan adds this to their standard practices is top notch amazing.

Thanking passengers for choosing their service and cooperating boarding smoothly, and sending this aircraft to the god of wind for the safe flight. It’s all about appreciation coming from our Shinto spirit.

I was connecting a flight at Narita with ANA to Thailand some years back. I was stunned to see ground crew lining up, bowing and waiving goodbye to passengers. Obviously it was my first time seeing it. It was so touching I had to waive back!

Remember it fondly when my Japan Airline flight arrived late at my home base airport due to the heavy rain, the JAL ground crew bowed and apologized to each single one of the passengers for the delay. Such a beautiful gesture from a Japanese airline.

This is very common when going to someone's house as well. They will often come outside, wait until you've gotten into your car and bow and wave goodbye until you're out of sight.

I was born American but raised in Japan almost right after birth, this kind of custom to people like me is considered second nature, and it's always nice to see it used for things that are even considered unnecessary. As a child I never understood those customs but still did it, and as time went on I could understand the meanings atleast by heart if even if I couldn't explain it. I betcha the fellows who made this a standard in Japan's airline companies knew it enough to explain it to other people in that sense.

Do you know if these personnel are ANA crew or employed by a contractor for ANA?

In Indonesia they basically do the same the thing but only the crew that follows the pushback tug does that.
