I live around 4.5 kilometers from the airport and this is the only engine startup sound that I can hear from my home. What an amazing piece of engineering this is.
Same with me I work as a Ramp Agent at YYZ and I live 10mins away by car from YYZ I can hear them fire up the engines on the ramp from my house and I know it's a 777-300/200 . Air Canada has a tone of them same with Air India and China Eastern and PIA
I live around 3.5 Kilometres from my local airport (CYVR/YVR Vancouver, Canada) and often at around 2 in the morning, I can hear distant 777-300ERs starting up, even from that distance. My roommates hate it, but I love it, it makes me happy every time I hear it. Long live the GE90!
For a quick breakdown of the sounds: The initial high pitched whine is bleed air from the APU (Auxilliary Power Unit) being fed into the turbine to start physically spinning up the engine, which cannot run off its own fuel from a standstil; think of it like a starter motor in a car engine. Once the turbine reaches a certain RPM the engine shaft is travelling fast enough to be self-sustaining, so the fuel is then introduced - this is the deep hum as it begins to ignite in the combustion chamber, the exhaust gases spinning the turbine to accelerate engine shaft speed until it reaches idle.
Some corrections here. 1, bleed air from the APU does not feed directly into the turbine. It’s fed into the starter motor which in turn spins up the N2 shaft. 2, engine doesn’t reach self sustaining until fuel is injected and ignited, the starter air valve is actually closed (64% N2) after igniters are de-energized (56% N2)
I work at an airport and I know this sound too well. I get goosebumps every time, and I gotta say of all the aircraft I see the 777-300er is the most badass and good looking aircraft ever. The A380 could never compete.

@@robingrunding5485 you can sometimes hear the compressed air from the APU under the floor as it surges along the ducts to start engine 1 then the bleed air from engine 1 ducts to start up engine 2.
@@ELPaso1990TX It would be air from the APU starting both engines. For noise and fuel consumption reasons, you don't do this unless necessary.
