Strip Paint From Wood With an Infrared Paint Remover

  • Stripping paint from wood without chemicals using Speedheater Cobra. Removing paint from wood is never an easy chore. Lead paint dust and chips are a concern.
I had lead paint that was chipping and starting to come off in small sheets down to the wood. Covering up the wood with aluminum was an option, however, I live in a humid climate. The wood would have to be sealed up prior to covering it up.
I explored many options, chemical paint removers. Too dangerous, time consuming and messy for me. I looked at paint shavers, but misuse can cause damage to wood and they only work on large flat surfaces. One of these shavers would be hard to hold above my head to remove paint from my porch beams.
I settled on Speedheater's Cobra hand held Infrared heater to remove the paint. While it only heated a 3.75" x 3.75" inch area, it only weighs 1lb 5 oz. I found that it quickly heated up many coats of paint that could be scraped off quickly. There were no little paint chips to stick to the bottom of my shoes. There were small chunks of paint which landed on my tarp. I could pick up the tarp and quickly slide the chunks of paint into a plastic bag.

What a job! It sure took a lot of patience to get it looking so nice. Pretty masonry flooring entry way too. Thanks for showing your hard work.

For sure it was a lot of work. When I moved into the house most of the slates on the porch were loose. I removed all of the slates, numbered them, drew an outline around each slate, then set all of them back down. It was a job! The masonry on the walls of the porch is coming off the block. On my list is to fix that. I doubt there will be a video for that. I can get it done, but don't think I know enough to give advice on that.

    Melvin too!
That’s tough work. The end result looks fabulous. 👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks for the compliment, Mario. I wanted to keep the original look of the house and couldn't bear to cap the wood with aluminum. The wood around the windows is capped with aluminum and after 20 years the powder coated paint on the aluminum is peeling off. Nothing lasts forever. I am very pleased with the results.
Melvin was angry at me. He kept trying to go under the tarps. I didn't want him to get in the paint chips. I put him in the house... as revenge he came back out and went under the tarp again!

You do great work!! Nice house.
Btw I recently bought a Craftsman version of your dad’s old mitre saw.

My brother and I share the mitre saw. I recently looked into the saw and noticed that there is a Craftsman version of it. I think Dad would have bought the saw for when he was installing kitchens. It was amazing to watch him work, he made carpentry work look easy.

@@Know-How-Now Sounds like your dad was a real pro!
I bought the Craftsman at Rona aka Lowes which carry the brand now.
It beats lugging around the Bosch compound mitre saw that weighs a ton!
I look forward to more videos.
I’m waiting to swap out a 1940s single pane wood window in the kitchen with a picture window from Home Depot. Lead time is nasty these days of course! Look forward to not installing the window film in the winter to stop drafts and condensation.

When I was growing up, we never hired anyone to do work. My dad built our first house and did almost all of the work. He worked for a home builder for a while, I am sure he did more than the carpentry work. I know he contracted the brick laying and plastering to someone.
Best wishes for the window replacement.

glad that is outside. heat releases lead fumes.

The heat range of the Infrared heater is 200-400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lead in paint vaporizes around 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. As mentioned in the video, a heat gun would likely be around 1100 degrees. I wore a respirator... who knows what else may be released when paint is heated.

Great job! I was on your other vids on how to replace and or fix electric stove coils. I went to see my coil connectors and saw they each have 4 your vids show 2 per element. Any suggestions? Love Love your channel.

Great video. I am considering getting this IR paint stripper to do the siding of my 1882 home. When you mentioned that the heat gun is probably more of a fire risk, is this mostly because it would blow the heat into cracks etc? I was hoping the cheaper guns would be ok, if used at the lower temp settings. Thanks!

For sure you could try the heat gun at a lower temp. I suspect it might heat up a smaller area and take longer. The other plus I found it that the paint came off in large clumps making clean up easy. I was concerned about lead getting onto the ground around my house. If you are doing siding, the company that makes the small hand held model I was using, makes a larger model for siding. It's kind of heavy. I saw people rigging up a system to hold it up and slide it horizontally along siding. You could always buy the IR stripper, use it and sell it on eBay after you are finished with the job. I thought that I would sell mine, but liked it so much that I am keeping it. So far, I stripped an interior door and a bunch of solid wood doors from a kitchen that was torn out..
