- The Toyota Hilux Champ is the latest derivative from the Hilux pickup truck lineup, and features a funky front-end design which gives it an eye-catching and modern appearance. It also features a large number of conversion possibilities, whether for commercial or recreational purposes.
In this video we review the entry-level variant with long wheelbase priced at Bt527,000, discussing the pros and cons of this new model from Toyota.
Short wheelbase, long-wheelbase, cab & chassis as well as standard pickup bed (with three-way access) variants are offered along with three engine choices - 2.0-liter gasoline (139hp, 183Nm), 2.7-liter gasoline (166hp, 245Nm) and 2.4-liter turbo diesel (150hp,343Nm) reviewed in this video. Both 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission choices are also available.
Thanks to Food and Drinks PCL for providing us with the test drive vehicle.

These would sell so well in the USA
Definitely! They can also be converted in many ways.

@@kingsley220 America needs to end the EPA. Trump on day one should sign Executive Order ending the EPA, FBI, ATF, etc.
@@kingsley220 Hilux Champ here in the Philippines is the All-New Toyota Tamaraw.
@@kingsley220What’s the Payload Capacity of this Truck?
American dealers will over price this
I'd rather have this than any of the pickup trucks that are on sale in the US market today.
I agree. There is nothing for sale in the US I am interested in at this time.
Blame CAFE standard. Bigger, fatter vehicles need to meet less MPG, who in their right mind designed that formula. Vote for Trump in november so we can rid of those idiots in the EPA.
@@khonjel_singh Biden is crap. That tells you how shitty Trump is when Biden can look so damn good in comparison.
@@khonjel_singh pfft, as if trump would get rid of people he's in kahoots with lol
@@craggleshenanigans What are you smoking
I wish I could buy two where I live in the united states. These bare bones capable work trucks look perfect for what I'd want.
Agree, applies to UK. Basic vehicles not available any more.
they will be sold in Mexico
@@keithhooper6123 I drive a Ford Ranger for work and had it two months before I realised it had a heated steering wheel and seats. It has so many things that I just don't need or want, what a waste of money that could have gone to paying me more.
Can't wait to own one of these in 25 years. Love living in the land of the free!
For farms, markets, towns, local commiuting, small and some big business, this Champ it's excellent!!
And there's also a Mini Land Cruiser on the way, to compete with the Suzuki Jimny.
Can't wait for it!
Really good review, but waaay too many "Thaiautonews" transitions. Having said that, Toyota would sell every one in the US. Lots of people want an affordable basic truck, and that bed is perfect.
I wish these came to America. We could finally afford something. Cars and trucks are too expensive here for most of us.
I am waiting for BYD to start selling their cars in the states. They have cars under $15k in Latin America. The cheapest Tesla is around $35,000. We need more affordable cars. We need competition that would keep the prices down. Let’s hope that the government will allow Toyota, BYD and other brands to sell these cars here in the future.
@@dfaro8453 yes future like next day
Dealers would do a 200% markup lol
@@dfaro8453 Not if the US goverment have anything to say about it unfortunately
I LOOOVE everything about this truck! Toyota, please bring these to Mexico!
That's what tradies need in Australia and New Zealand. Nice work horse.
I recently read that there american trucks are getting popular right?
@@mokisanFew people buy Usa Trucks in Nz
I want this more than any truck on the US market. This thing is great and I am so mad it isn't available here
Tacoma et sequoia et Hilux
Wish these were coming to Australia 😢
No Frills, No BS work ute. These would sell like hotcakes in Aus as trade fleet vehicles and for apprentices. i hope they get here.
If this came to the USA with some minor updates for under 20k heck even 25k it would be the best selling truck with many fleets changing over. for the price of a f150 or work van you get at least 2. Here in South Florida k trucks are being used by more construction companies where they can. Main reason is its does the job at a great price, easy maintenance and easy repair
Toyota should make a global model, South Africa is thirsty for a pick up like this. Especially for commercial use.
It is a Global model. I believe it was 181 countries that it is coming to.
@@GoochGooch-cc7sj That's great news, thanks for letting us know.
I like it a LOT! I think the little 2.4L diesel suits this truck well. I like what what I see a lot for the price, I don't think the interior is bad at all considering that the most important things are reliability and capability. As for the basic styling, I LOVE IT! We live in an era of overly fancy trucks, this is a tough looking basic truck and I like it for it.
We need these in the US yesterday
I saw one today in downtown Pattaya. I really like the look of these. I suspect I will see a lot more of these on the roads in the coming weeks/months. Great video!
Thanks! I've seen a couple already apart from this one. A lot will be seen in the coming months for sure.
@@kingsley220 Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda announced during the 35th Anniversary of Toyota Motor Philippines that this Hilux Champ a.k.a. All-New Tamaraw will be produced locally in the Philippines as a Completely-Build Unit or CBU at Toyota Santa Rosa Factory.
Those same tail light have been on many many commercial vehicles here in Australia, they were always a standard "Stanley" part.
I want 5. Sad they aren't in the usa.
Thanks for making us English speakers a very well made video about the champ. I can't help thinking these are exactly what we need here in USA. The cheapest tacoma is about $35,000 or Bt1.28 million but we never see those at dealers. Most dealers have models from $40,000 to $50,000. It wasn't that long ago when Toyota sold basic pickups here for affordable prices. The current tacoma prices aren't affordable. I like the look of the champ with bigger offroad tires. Some things like power mirrors and buckets for the taillights would be nice but would cause the price to go up. And finally an affordable turbo diesel would be welcome here.
Thank you so much for this video😊
People will complain about lack of refinement but, like a Jeep Wrangler, you’re buying what you’re buying. Don’t expect a 300 series. I’m sure, in the Australian market (and most others) that tray will swapped/customised ASAP so if Toyota wants to save $ on tail lights, go ahead.
I’m looking forward to the 4x4.
it looks like you can fit a standard plywood size there base on the dimension of the bed. nice
I’d buy one this minute if they went on sale in the US
buy one here in texas for sure
Hopefully this goes everywhere in the world eventually
Great video, your English is really good and you make the video fun and interesting to watch
Thanks a lot!
i love your videos, i can easily understand what you're talking even im not from Thailand.
@@dhavish4444 Thanks!
Great review thanks 😊
Hello from Slovenia, EU. This would be the perfect truck for my farm activities. To bad its not comming over here.....
Wow this is the first comment from Slovenia! Thanks!
@@kingsley220 Greetings to Thailand.❤
Sadly, they are not going to ship the Champ to Europe as long at they are convinced you are willing/capable of paying for the regular Hilux (because we are all filthy rich right!).
The Champ only "happened" in Thailand because the price of the regular Hilux was too high and didn't sell there.
Maybe some other maker is going to catch up on the fact that people everywhere need a basic rugged commercial vehicle to get the job done.
Dacia or maybe Tata, will pickup on this.
In turn, this could force Toyota to ship the Champ to the rest of the world.
@@stoissdk I think it's not offered in the US and they don't even get the Hilux either (get the Tacoma instead). This Hilux Champ is doing very well in Thailand. It's not perfect but it does open a lot of opportunities for Toyota.
@@kingsley220it’s not being sold in America because of chicken tax
I would love this as the little commuting brother to my Tacoma
If Toyota sold this in the US I’d Pre-Order and PrePay in a heartbeat for 1. Could be great for a business vehicle.
Great review. How does this truck stack up against the Suzuki Carry?
I think it's more refined to drive than the Carry and has more cab space.
Will it be coming to malaysia?
Kingsley great review, please Toyota bring these lil trucks to the US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
@thaiautonews Hilux Champ in Thailand is also known as Hilux Rangga. In the Philippines, Hilux Champ is also known as the All-New Toyota Tamaraw.
Toyota hat mal wieder bewiesen, wie weitsichtig er ist!!!!!!!!
love toyota's design language.Timeless.
i know that we are going to see this truck for like 20 years from now and still running fine
LOL!
@thaiautonews HOW’S THE FUEL ECONOMY of this Hilux Champ in the city and highway?
According the the official Eco Sticker it does 7.8l/100km in the city and 6.4l/100km on the highway, averaging at 6.9l/100km.
Hope they come soon to Brazil! Hilux Champ is simply perfect for commercial use or light cross country adventures (at that price point)!
This is really a cargo truck, very simple design but very-very useful. I like it.
I like its looks!
I will buy one, will the EPA approve the truck for America?
No Brasil será um sucesso de vendas.
A nova Bandeirantes!!
Can we get a Toyota Tacoma champ here in the US?
Need these in Canada. We just get overpriced Mexican tacos.
LOL
As a Canadian I would die to buy the Hilux. Man if only Canada adopt EU standards we could get our hands on small trucks like these legally
@@urgeeked3977can't you import from ME? They drive the same side and every option from Toyota exists there.
It's so basic, so exposed. Simple yet interesting. I can see this styling as the start of bare essentialism. I kinda like it. Very good
I would buy one in a heartbeat of it were available in France. Cmon Toyota export these in europe already
I want one!!! Now!!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I know they will be bringing these here to Saudi Arabia can't wait for them
They can be customized in a large number of ways. Hope Toyota will offer a 4WD version with a bigger diesel engine in the future as well.
@@kingsley220 These kinds of trucks are extremely popular in Saudi Arabia having this will be an amazing thing
VERY CONVENIENCE, MUCH GOOD
Im not a truck guy but those would look awesome in a lift kit.(not those crazy high ones)
I would love one of these in the states for home projects. So much easier to park and maneuver.
Edit - Coming from a 3/4 ton Ram owner.

its bs we cant get this in USA
just wait it will be here in USA
Thank NHTSA

when will this come to eu? would buy imidiatly
can't wait to get a couple of them for my business in the philippines. might get one for myself to get around the island. hoepfully they make a 4x4 in the future
Surely coming to the Philippines as the Tamaraw.
It would be nice if we could get vehicles like this in the USA, it would be a perfect vehicle for me, the only additions I would need is a sun visor for the passenger and heat since neither is supplied on these vehicles, but it comes with AC.
Hilux Champ and the Stout......are they one in the same or completely different? USA i hope will get something like this soon. we need it
From what I've read the Stout could be based on the Rav4/Corolla platform while the Champ is based on the Hilux.
That would be great
Do they have aircon or do you have to pay extra for that?
Air-con comes as standard.
@@kingsley220 Thats great news. I can do without a sound system but I need aircon in Thailand.

What size of the bed frame?
It's in the video.
How much weight did you put on it?
Each of those weigh about 650kgs so 1.3 tons in total.
I’d buy one today if we had them in Canada
Excelente para as estradas brasileiras.
Excellent video! Could you fit 3 people inside?
Yes that's the reason for the long left seat. But not so comfortably I guess, due to the gear lever.
I see. Guess I'll have to go with the Manual Transmission to fit three people. Though, I feel the automatic variant is so much better. Thanks for your response!
@@EJM_02 Might as well take two other people along and try it out at the dealership. Cheers!

Does it come in 4 wheel drive ?
Nope, only RWD at the moment.

Bring it to the USA!🇺🇸
What is the load capacity?
It's classified as a 1-ton truck but buyers in Thailand do upgrade the load capacity with aftermarket parts. After shooting of the video, this truck also went through the upgrade and got a rear cab as well.

I like it. No bullshit. Just does what it's meant to do.
Trd pro version please
Toyota and Nissan useto make a small dually truck my uncle had one when i was young he used it for his service truck for his logging outfit
Im considering purchasing a isuzu npr truck seen one with a aluminum bed similar to whats in this video nothing fancy just a work truck and reliable
A basic truck was a staple of us car makers now trying to sell you a 30k at the cheapest
Toyota would sell about 500k of these per year in the usa
I would buy one and turn it to a camper van. If Toyota would sell them under 15k, it would be a steal for anyone. Manual and 4x4, would be great for off-roading too.
Would like it if Honda or Toyota released something like this in the USA. But would say the area I live in it would be nice for 4 wheel drive
It's based on the Hilux so a 4WD version could easily be added to the lineup if Toyota wants to.
lovely accent and car
Thanks!
Ill take one short wheel base 4wd and diesel, price in U.S. ?
If you mean USD then it's $15,788. Currently available only in Thailand -- to be launched in Philippines during the 4th quarter of this year as the "Tamaraw".
I would really like to see these in Europe
If the price is RIGHT , as a basic truck it should do-well(sell) here in IRELAND, the "beauty" of this truck over the Hiace is it Easy entry and low approach to get into the cab, iI equally think it SHOULD be somewhat more comfortable in that the engine/bonnet is out-front. Thanks for the good Review, personally i would buy one, Bring it to IRELAND and we will decide fairly Quickly, again thanks for the good review, Liam in IRELAND
We need this in the US🥺
No left hand drive?
Should have in the future.
Hopefully these have good rust protection unlike kei trucks
Toyota Malaysia should introduce this no frill truck locally
I think they were going to make a 4x4 version and van design, too.
