Thanks for making us English speakers a very well made video about the champ. I can't help thinking these are exactly what we need here in USA. The cheapest tacoma is about $35,000 or Bt1.28 million but we never see those at dealers. Most dealers have models from $40,000 to $50,000. It wasn't that long ago when Toyota sold basic pickups here for affordable prices. The current tacoma prices aren't affordable. I like the look of the champ with bigger offroad tires. Some things like power mirrors and buckets for the taillights would be nice but would cause the price to go up. And finally an affordable turbo diesel would be welcome here.

I could do so many things with that bed. Camping, grocery shopping, get reimbursement for fuel if used for company equipment/transport/traveling, moving, there's so many things... I'd just need airbags, and if it comes with speakers, I can just use my phone aux cord for music, gps, etc. Even better if I can plug my phone in, and get an electronic connection to parts, like the transmission, engine, etc. Then I could accurately check that without added devices to cost more in the truck itself. It'd give another usage for my smartphone too if applicable. No overreaching EPA in my state of Iowa, and plenty of gravel roads!
As long as the torque and power is good enough, I can easily lay some sandbags over the rear wheels in the bed to get plenty of traction in Fall and Winter. I wonder what types of extreme conditions it can stay usable in though. Offroading is one thing, but how does it fair in negative temperatures, including negatives in the fahrenheit that Iowa loves to change to suddenly?

@@kingsley220 I know for a fact that this would immediately become a hit with farmers here in Iowa, Minnesota, North/South Dakota, Illinois, and Michigan as long as the battery, and tires can last in the Midwest cold seasons. The only thing it really needs is an airbag, some crash testing, and maybe some extra things I'm forgetting off the top of my head.
Other than those, if it gets good fuel economy, then I don't see a reason for that market to not choose this truck, especially over other types currently available. A farmer here could get a small fleet of those for the price of one workhorse truck here. The only thing it could be competing with in that market is pull weight. Many Americans use their trucks to pull trailers of things, including farm equipment, and something like the favorite F150, Cherokee, Chevy 4x4s, and more, might outperform this for that function, making this less attractive. Many other markets however, would find this niche to be a great fit right away, like construction, and manufacturing!

The Champ only "happened" in Thailand because the price of the regular Hilux was too high and didn't sell there.
Maybe some other maker is going to catch up on the fact that people everywhere need a basic rugged commercial vehicle to get the job done.

I would love one of these in the states for home projects. So much easier to park and maneuver.
Edit - Coming from a 3/4 ton Ram owner.

I would love to lightly customize this. Find a place to put a durable, gritty bed liner on as much of the panels as I could. Maybe even do it on the paint that faces the wheels when down. Couple other little touches and it's the perfect pickup for me.

In Thailand we customize this Hilux Champ in so many ways. There are all sorts of aftermarket accessories.

The truck Americans need, but will never get. It's so clearly built to do work, to transport goods. I have a lawn care business...it's easy to imagine converting that to a lawn care truck...a couple of racks, lower it a couple inches and add a ramp, just drive my zero turn right up.

@11:54 They cheaped out on the rev counter. It has nothing to do with being a commercial vehicle. That's how you know they were penny pinching in the R&D department. 😉

I would buy one and turn it to a camper van. If Toyota would sell them under 15k, it would be a steal for anyone. Manual and 4x4, would be great for off-roading too.
