I stopped back by to let you know what you said that helped me the most with Bellamy's style. "He keeps his larynx in a neutral position." That was the key I needed for me. I can sing his style now, its not an impersonation so it doesn't sound like Matt, it sounds like me covering a Muse song. So thank you very much for that.
I just figured you would like feedback when someone learns something from your videos. You have helped me a lot, you are the one vocal coach I always listen to first, you present your lessons in a way that are easy to understand and thats what makes progress happen. I literally progressed to the point my wife now says it sounds professional, my mixing got better because I am not trying to hide my voice anymore, and the song "Something Human" was the first time my wife said "that is beautiful wow its a 10".
Also that line is what helped me with other songs and after I realized how much it improved my voice I covered "Sound of Silence" by Disturbed and I finally got it. Everyone who listened to it didn't actually think it was me because of how I learned to bring my chest voice up so it sounded as deep as David Draimen.
Again I cannot thank you enough.

Your range is incredible. I really enjoyed your take on his sound. Bellamy's voice has so much clarity at higher notes, which is why I never get tired of listening to MUSE.

There's a looooot of hate from Bellamy fans here for some reason.
Guys, Ken it's not trying to be Matt's double or his impersonator, he's showing that he uses certain vocal techniques to sing the way Matt sings and all of those can be learning.
He did a lot of videos showing some vocal cover to other artist for the same reason.
Did you go on youtube searching for covers to say obvious things like "you don't sound like Matt" and that stuff? Or "sing another dificult and killing voice song, I dare you" ?? Keep the hate down.

Regarding My How To Sing Like... Series:
People say "I want to sound like me and not anyone else."
And I say - Absolutely! No one should "clone" anyone.
But we all have influences, and it is the sum of those influences, and how we "re-present" them with our own style that makes us great.
Learning a difficult cover song where the bar is set high, is an excellent grading scale to see how well our technique is working.
This is also true for learning different styles as this increases our vocabulary for diverse singing and helps us find our own unique voice.
In my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin, but seek to show you how to sing in their "style" safely.
Check Out One Of My Original Songs Featuring Some Of My Singing Influences (singing both soft and heavy) Here: How To Sing Like David Coverdale - Glenn Hughes - Lou Gramm - Paul Rodgers
When Choosing A Vocal Coach Or Singing Program, Make Sure The Coach Can Prove Their Technique With Their Own Voice & Their Students Voices Whether It's Cover Songs Or Originals.
The Proof Is In The Singing.

One thing I don't think anyone gets is his phrasing, you have got the tone and style very very well down (as much as you can without having his vocal chords ;) ) but the way he pronounces and ascends or descends a note is very unique and extremely hard to replicate, and hard to describe too!

A thing nobody can copy is...emotion...even if voice is good... Matt Bellamy's style doesn't mean Matt Bellamy's feeling... Matt Bellamy's voice is not just a powerful one...but also a very emotionnal one 😍

Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"?
I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieve this "stress free" singing.
(this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as if they are the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept)
This is nonsense and here's why:
Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete.
    Think of it like this:
When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?"
(Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before).
But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal."
But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress."
Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency.
Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training.
In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina.
This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training.
With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's OK to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away from the voice through correct training.
If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

    • @zuklar

I remember when I set out to sing just 2 years back... I wanted to sing like Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden (songs like Hallowed Be Thy Name).
I would practice all the time at work - in the truck, anywhere I had some privacy. I was horrible! I would get excited every time I could hit a note though.
Now -- 2 years later: I may not sound great, but I can hit the notes cleanly without any feeling of strain.
Now my biggest obstacle is just having to 'warm up' my voice some - as phlegm ruining my high notes can still be an issue seeing as how I smoke the devil's cabbage.
Anyway. Great video, Ken! Whenever I see one of your videos, I insta-like it -- as I have never been disappointed with your content.

    • @Nr4747
      @Nr4747 6 лет назад +1

Agreed. It's the *illusion* of stress-free singing that is the ultimate goal for any great singer, not *actual* stress-free singing.
An incredible (and almost impossible to reach, so not a good example to show to studying singers) example is Fritz Wunderlich, the greatest lyrical tenor ever recorded.
When Wunderlich reached some of the highest and most difficult notes of very tough arias like "Granada", he actually went slightly *above* the prescribed note in his vibrato and added his unique, "featherlight" tembre on top of it. He then proceded to "drop down" to the prescribed note right at the end of holding it, adding a perfect illusion of effortlessness to the already incredible holding of the note. The impression that this automatically leaves the audience with is that Wunderlich could "easily reach even higher" and "easily hold the toughest notes even longer" - although that was just the illusion that he created.

I run karaoke at my bar and I ask people if they want to sing and almost always get "nah you don't wanna hear that haha!". I reply with saying that "anyone and everyone can sing, you don't have to sound great". Singing is about emotion and in karaoke having fun as well! Even matt Bellamy wasn't great to start out but listen to him now he's amazing.

Lots of critics here ought to pull their heads out of their asses. Ken isn't saying he sounds like Bellamy, but saying he's using the same techniques. Obviously tone will vary from person to person, and Matt has a very unique voice. Matt is also one of the best vocalists alive. Does that mean Ken isn't good? No. He's doing great at all of these songs, his technique seems to be spot on, he simply has a different voice.

Why are so many people here hating, Matt Bellamy is a great singer but if you listen to some of his earlier work (Plug in Baby demo) his voice is very unrefined and it just goes to show that anyone can achieve a good singing voice with adequate training, it also takes a lot of motivation, determination and passion. This is the first video i've seen of this guy and anyone denying that he does a very good representation of Matt Bellamy's singing style is just being ridiculous and bitter.

I see that you can sing Matt's easiest songs.... But can you sing Micro Cuts?
I issue a challenge to you, good sir. Attempt to sing Micro Cuts by Muse. If you can pull it off, send me a shipping address, and I will send you a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Are you up to the challenge?

Tom Barkel + Salty Sea Pickle I actually just finished Judas Priest Painkiller and will be posting that soon (which is a whole lot more difficult than micro cuts which is all falsetto If I can find the time (and a decent track without having to make it from scratch) I will give it a shot :-)

Tom T-C micro cuts it's much easier to sing compared to madness, in fact in the I need to love part he sings the highest note of his natural range, micro cuts is falsetto.

I wasn't attempting to get my vibrato to be exactly like Matt's. just to do somehting in the spirit of his singing.
