That is a beautiful rifle and looked like great fun to experiment with. My Great-Grandad was shot with a German Mauser in 1916, the bullet went through his front teeth, down through his tongue and throat, into the back of his neck and was extracted from his right shoulder! He was a tough old bloke, he didn't pop his clogs until 1970!
Wow. And he was able to speak and eat still? That's one tough grandpa.
This rifle exposed me to the 6.5x55 cartridge, and made me fall in love with it. So much so, that I bought a new CZ 557 carbine chambered for 6.5x55, and it has become my favorite bolt action rifle.
Back in the 1960 - 63 period I built three 6.5 x 55's. One on a Win Mdl 70, Rem 700 'n' a Savage 110 with some old 6.5 bull barrels the family had laying around. My uncles told me I was crazy using 26" barrels for a deer rifle in the Vermont woods. Each of the rifles harvested deer and bear before I went to South Vietnam.
I live in New Hampshire and we really live in an area where terrain is quite different than other places. In one area you could be walking along on nothing but rock ledge, and 100 yards later be flat and thin as can be, then another 100 yards it could change and be crazy thick and very rough country. Depends on where your gonna be and if you know the terrain. My personal opinion, for our neck of the woods anyway either the remington 788 in 30-30 or the savage 340 30-30 bolt guns are the best options ESSPECIALLY if you hand load.
The old timers at the legion in fair haven always said the 6.5 Swede was the only thing to use when it came to hunting bigger game

The last time I took my m96 out, I had a perfect head shot on a coyote at 200 yards using Norma soft-tips. I love this gun! I bought mine a little over 20 years ago in a gun store for $79.95!
Youre probably having so many issues with elevation because the sights on the swedish mausers are made for the heavier round nosed bullets they started using in 1894. When they (finally) switched to a 142/3gr spitzer in 1941, they never made new sights for the standard rifles - instead, they would rivet a range plate into the stock (usually next to the brass disk) that shows you how high/low to aim to account for the new cartridge.
Many of the older rifes did have their sights re-calibrated for the spitzer, there is a mark (its an F or an N from memory) that denote recalibrated for spitzer.That being said the load/pill they ran is not something available of the shelf afaik so you are always going to have to use some ammount of hold over/under and Kentucky windage! I love my Swedes, I have 2, but the sights re the worst ive come across! Stupidly long range zero, I think my m96 shoots about 400m on its lowest setting with modern pills and loads, essentially useless! Ive got a brownells peep on it these days, i can zero at whatever i like ad get a much better sight picture.I have a later short rifle thats not as bad, but still not very usable! I much preffer the sights on my no1mk3!
Most m96 mauser had their sights refitted in the 1950s my shoots on point and it was made 1917
@@dunxy The Enfield sights are probably the most user friendly iron sights on any military rifle ever. The M16 uses basically the same setup, minus the long range flip up ladder of course.
I love it when you guys feature the Swedes! My m96 is my favorite mil-surp. If Chad is really wanting a modern rifle chambered in 6.5x55 there are several options, but I opted for a Howa barreled action bedded in a Boyd's stock. I built 2 identical hunting rifles (one for me, one for my wife) and they are both sub 1/2 MOA with my hand loads.

You had me at "Swedish" , and I too would love to see a Ljungman at the range. Nice of you too show you guys shooting the gun from scratch at the furthest target, can not be easy hitting a target at 600m with a WW1/WW2 rifle. Keep up the good work!

Love that 6.5 Swede cartridge!! And what a fine rifle to shoot. That cartridge has taken so many game animals from all over the world. Very fine performance and minimal recoil. Thanks for sharing!!
I would recommend a 130gr bullet HPBT and Hogdon 4831 or Accurate 3100 for powder. I would start at ~46gr powder load and work myself up.
Swedes are amazing rifles. I had several in the past... one was a magnificent 96 - all matching and just beautiful wood excellent condition. Alas, I let them get away. But.... I just found a 96/38 on gunbroker of all places = most all matching serials, and for $550 so I ordered it. Everything looks really good in the pics/description so hoping for a good one. It has the original sights, not updated to the spitzer round but I handload, so I can just load up milspec 160 grain loads which should match up to the sights. Looks like it's either S&B factory 131 grain loads or handload. You can probably find other factory loads but the prices are nuts... thanks for the vid! I enjoyed it.
Yesssssss! I have a 1899 M96 Sniper (M41) with the orginal scope mount. I put an Vintage Weaver K 2.5 scope on it! I love the 6.5... great round!

Hey guys awsome video. I have shot swedes for many years. With your elevation issue. What I have done is silver sodder a small piece of a coat hanger to front sight. Works well.
Hello. I have an M96 from 1913 Gustav...I noticed at 200 yards I was holding WAY under the bullseye - maybe 10-12 inches AT LEAST - obviously the sight only go down to 300 meters...but I was amazed how low I needed to hold. Luckily I had a buddy spotting for me and after about 5 shots I had POA figured and was placing shots (almost all of them - 30ish) within roughly a 10in circle. I have a few questions for you:
1. How many shots is too many, shooting every 30 seconds, as the barrel was getting pretty hot.
2. What few rounds does yours like? I was shooting SB 131 & 140 grain and PPU 139gr & 120gr...thoughts?
I have to admit, I enjoy your long range shooting videos. Not so much the newer rifles, but the older rifles like the M96. Just to see what the old work horses can do.
Guys... guys... think about it a moment. You don't have to physically alter your sights, you don't need a specific load. There are two simple ways that you can have a nice 6 o'clock hold on that 550 yard/meter (whatever) gong and hit it consistently. On the battlefield, the enemy does not place themselves at 100 meter intervals for the convenience of your sight settings - they are at random distances and the Swedish (German, Russian, etc.) military knew this. Just think about it for a moment and you'll see how to use your unmodified m/96B with the ammo you've got and also be able to have a 6 o'clock hold on the gong. No need to aim way low in the grass or anywhere else.
I had one of these many years ago, I have kicked myself many times for selling it. I bought it at a gun show for $75.00 and it was very accurate. These rifles are finely crafted and beautiful. Looking forward to another video with this gun. Thanks for this video.
I presently own a m96 manufactured in 1899 and has the original disk, all original. I previously owned a model 33/55 and it was all original except for the front sight. Someone had done away with with the military blade and replaced it with a more modern at some point. Was easier to hit small targets at 200 and 300 yards.
Have two M38, one milspec, one fully sported. The sight issue with your M96 is two fold. 1) sights are regulated for the RN 162 grain ball load. When Sweden adopted tge 142 grain spitzer they did not correct the sights but pasted a correction table to the stock. Hope you can read Swedish. 2) the twist rate in the barrel is optimized for the longer and heavier bullet. Shooting 140 gr bullets as I think you are results in a very slightly unstable projectile in flight. Not really an issue inside 300 yards, but more significant at range.
The M94/M96/M38 will not shoot the lighter 6.5 bullets popular in the 6.5 creedmore because of the twist issue. The 123 grain varmint bullets keyhole from mine at 50 yards. Go to a 160 grain bullet like a match king and you will drill a hole in your gong.
The swedes know how to treat wood and metal to full effect!, if you look at most custom knives from swedish makers, they're works of art. May all at iv8888 have a great new year ( and all the subscribed readers!!). All the best, from cold damp norfolk(u.k)!!

This video made me dig out a sporterized 6.5x55 milsurp rifle I got in a trade forty years ago.....taking it to the range tomorrow.
I’ve got an m96 with diopter sights and I cannot express how fantastic it is to shoot, the gun is kinda beat up, the diopters have been banged around and completely marred up. It has a kinda dark and kinda crusty bore, the first time I shot it I went and did 5/5 on the 200 yard gong, 5/5 on the 300, 4/5 on the 400 and then 3/5 on the 500 first shots shooting it and I was just nailing the 500 yard gong all day after that

My two favorite "high power" rifle cartridges are 6.5mm Swede, and .270 Winchester. Never shot 6.5mm Creedmoor, yet. The only reason I want a "Creedy" is ammo availability vs. 6.5mm Swede.
You should check out an Australian channel called mark and Sam after work if your into long range stuff, shoots stuff like 375 cheytac, 338 lap, 375 Gibbs out to 4000+ yard. Awesome channel. And pulls off standing 1000 yard shots with 357mag in a marlin for fun, similar videos to this, just takes you through the process with them and not just cut scenes of all the hits. I LOVE my Swedish Mauser. Its by far the most consistent shooting rifle I've ever owned. Date stamp on my Gustav is 1919.
I've got a modern Browning A-bolt in 6,5*55 mm and it shoots like a dream. Great long range cartridge especially firing the Norma Diamondline 130gr bullet.
Of course I have my CG63 also in the same calibre, the peak of Swedish Mauser target technology during the 1960:s built on the m/96.

I have a M96 made in 1918. I made a new front post to fit the dovetail that is approximately 1/10" higher than the original. Mine originally shot 6" high at 200 yards on the 200m setting. The additional height brought it right down.

The Swedish home guard later used a rear diopter peep sight made by Söderin or Pramm on the M96 rifles which is why they're usually allowed in most military surplus rifle competitions. The Söderin diopter is adjustable to 600m. They significantly improve the shootability and adjustability especially for longer range and sporting applications. I think hitting that gong at 600 yards with the diopter would have been a breeze with that diopter in the rifle. The inherent accuracy is most certainly there. Some people shoot these rifles at 1000 yards.
A dial elevation adjustment(Vesteras spelling may not be correct) insert takes all the "fun" out sight adjustment on the M96 while not permenantly altering it. The dial was the right choice for me using my 1921 in vintage service rifle matches. My favorite rifle in my collection is a CG 80 with a Shultz and Larsen barrel and a Danish Konesburg two stage match trigger. Thanks for the Video , 6.5x55 is the original 6.5 "cool" and my favorite.

Likely the reason you're off is that it's set at a certain range with the front sight you have, for the M41 spitzer ammo, while the range settings on the backsite are unchanged and set for the 156 grain roundnosed ball that was issued before. There's range conversion stickers with holdover/under for the varying ranges that were issued to troops and stuck upside to the stock to help them dope the ranges. You are shooting closer to M41 spec ammo, not accountign for the differing trajectory/unmatched front site height and using the original range settings---
"In my mind if you can shoot this gun, you can shoot anything." I apply that more to learning the quirks of a mid-war mosin with 30 year-old surplus and then also knowing how it corrects once the barrel heats up. =) M39 on the other hand.... whatever you feed it, it puts in the ring.
Got to love the old Swede! Over 100 years old and still a very accurate gun! I love mine :-)

This is by far my favourite millsurp bolt action, I've heard storys of this rife shooting 1-3 moa witch is almost unheard of with most milsurp rifles. I want one pretty bad lol

I have swedish Mauser but the carbine version and love it. Had to put different front sit on it so it would be at 100 yards instead of 300 meters.

Addleyprecision makes a smith-less picatinny rail scope mount that works well and there is no alteration to the rifle, I put one on my 1924 Swedish M96 and it works well and holds zero. I bought a turned down bolt for the rifle and kept the original bolt. Incredible shooter and the gun maintains its originality
A friend of mine was/is a hardcore air rifle shooter, when somebody told him to try his luck with a fire arm. So he bought a mint condition M96 for €250,- and learned to hand load accurate ammo. After a year, a friend signed him in for a 300, 500 and 600 yard Bisley style match. He was shocked (he only shot 100 meters), but learned the bullet drop and working with the sights. He won the 500 and 600 meters that day... Keep in mind that Bisley style is only 12 shots per distance and the best 10 counts.
Here in Holland, all rifles that are not 5,56 mm are competing in the 'Veteran' class. The only rifles that are capable of winning these matches are the K31, 1903A3 and the M96. Oh, and occasionally an old Dutch AR10.
In Holland, most 100 meter ranges are indoor and so are the service rifle matches shot at 100 meters. Because standard loads heat up the barrel very fast, and mirage blocks the sight view, serious competition shooters download their ammo. They use 20 grains of faster burning powder. M96's are know to win almost every veteran rifle class match. Together with the 1903A3. For military rifle class, you need an AR15 or SIG Stg90 to win a match.
Seriously looking forward to seeing the Swedish Mauser back out at the 600y range. You need to. You guys can shoot, and the Swedish Mausers are so much more accurate than this video shows. I'm a huge fan. I have many Swedish Mausers. Right from a 1900 Oberndorf FSR96, 1900 Carl Gustaf M96, M41b only with iron sights, 1943 Husqvarna M96, 1943 Husqvarna M38, Absolutely mint 1968 CG63, and a Swedish built custom hunting rifle built on a 1915 Carl Gustaf M96. Big thumbs up on the 600y range shoots.
I have a couple M96 Mausers. The front sight is a 300 meter sight. You can get a shorter frontsight to calibrate shots at every 100 yds.
I have a CG 63 which is a swedish mauser converted to a 300m target rifle by Carl Gutaff. I love it!

Mine almost Always catches a ride in my truck when we go out shooting! Young shooters and girls tend to do really well with my old lady. Great gun I use to transition new shooters from 22 to a real BANG!
Mil Surp is 147 grain and fast Fast FAST! Flat flat FLAT! so heavy it soaks up the recoil.

I have a model 96 with 6.5x55. its considered as a Nato round. they are extremely powerful very accurate and not much recoil. I absolutely love this rifle. great gun to hunt with.
Love my Swede . It's a 96 Gustav . It's been "sporterized" with a ramline stock and a lil bolt work. To this day probably my most accurate rifle at range . Best part you can shoot it all day with no strawberries.

6,5x55 is the most used target load allso in Norway, both in standard rifle competition 200 and 300 meters. We used to use the Krag jørgensen in 6,5x55..
Thanks for the great review. Have a CZ 557 6.5x55 and it is a great shooter. Absolutely love military surplus. IMHO barrel length, although providing more accuracy, many Mausers near 30" painful to tote around the Montana backcountry.
i find my M96 produces heat-induced mirage over the front post quicker than the K98K and other old-school rifles (Lee-Enfield, K31, Mosin etc). Not sure if this is due to the barrel heating up faster (more surface contact area of that long slim projectile) or just the front post design

Luckily we are still one of the most armed people on earth here in sweden, but they are sure trying hard to restrict it. Rifles like the benelli MR1 is getting denied due to appearence while the BAR match or an AR15 is still allowed. Nothing makes sense

Very common Rifle here in Australia, there are 4 Gun shops in my town and each of them have at least 3 on the shelves.
In the '80s there was a company doing "sporter" versions here, They put them in a reasonable stock, removed the iron sights, drilled and tapped them and mounted a 4x32 Nikko Stirling 'scope on them and sold them for about $200.
You can also get Timney triggers and low swing safeties for them. Barnes are doing some fantastic projectiles in this calibre now, and they are a piece of cake to reload. My cousin and i have competitions with each other shooting bunnys with them, He's winning at the moment with a hit at 666 measured Meters! (The Devils shot :-) )
P.S. Don't let anyone tell you the receivers are made of "soft metal", they are as good as, and some times better than many Rifles made at that time.

I really like the 6.5x55 sm. I have one in a Sako 85 hunting rifle. And I'm using handloads with Hornady ELD-X 143gr and man I'm telling you it's a real tackdriver. :)

I looked at one today . 1943 3 mill range serial. Needs a new forearm top wood and it is perfect. Good trigger too. That and a S&W 29 in 44 Mag.... Its trigger was insane.
SuperTruckerTom right on, I have a Remington thats a tac driver, just got done reloading for it. Also got a Smith Corona in a original keystone c stock. Snagged it from an old camp perry shooter. Nice rifles.

This (in my opinion) is one of the greatest cartridges ever developed. It's been around since 1894 and is more than capable of taking any game on the planet with the exception of maybe a few on the dark continent and even then may perhaps be up to the task with proper bullet selection and shot placement.

You can buy repo mounts for the M41B you were talking about. Although I don't think they are the right height from my experience and the company is 100% no help at all even after you buy there somewhat expensive products. Anyway before I got an original scope for mine I was using a Weaver Classic (6X24 that are also for sale at Moss) because after much research I found that the ocular bell on the Classics are about the same size as an original scope. I believe they might be tailored for such applications.

The Hornady SST load in 6.5x55 is nice and hits hard. Was hitting the same steel with the AR in 5.56, the swed hit so much harder.
I reload 6.5x55 with modern high ballistic coefficient bullets. 6.5mm .264 Diameter 143 Grain ELD-X I call them 6.5X55 Swedish Express!! Swedish Mauser has never been this accurate!!
More information please! What brand of powder & load. I reload... but haven't tried the 6.5! I would appreciate any tips your willing to share!

Thank's Jay... I have an 1899 M96 Sniper (M41). It came with the #'s correct scope mount upper and lower... but no scope. I got a great deal on it $230 (Father's Day Online Auction via Proxibid). I had no idea what it was... but I had to bid since nobody else was... I already had a Spanish Mauser9(7.62x51) and a Yugo Mauser M24/47 (8mm)... I love to shoot them all... but the M96 is now my favorite!
Timothy Smith Cool beans. I'm old with rifles twice as old. Inherited a 30-40 Krag. Have a tremendous amount of respect for Scandinavian country's engineering. Check those locking lugs though.
6.5x55 Swedish Express! This bullet and loading data is in the Hornady 10th reloading edition. Powders 4831, RL-17, Varget. My rifle likes Varget best 36gr. Don't load Varget to the Max data off the Hodgdon website for 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, IMHO.
The Swedes knew their stuff when it came to improving Paul Mauser’s rifle. That M96 is a beautiful rifle.
You could get some railroad ties, paint them white and put the at 25 foot (or yards) increments in front of the plate, so you could have a rough point of reference when you're trying to figure out a hold.

600 yards iron sites,,,you guys are pro's,,,,no kiddn. Great shots
James Eastridge - in the Army in the 1980s, 600m with iron sights was the expected standard with 7.62x51mm. From the prone position but without using a rest.

James Eastridge - that doesnt automatically mean *_everyone_* could meet that standard but it was what was expected. This was with the SLR (semi-auto FN FAL). When the standard cartridge for all NATO countries became 5.56mm that distance was effectively halved. In more modern times with the advent of the designated marksman role in infantry platoons we've kind of gone back to a 7.62mm rifle and that standard is expected again (but with scopes which is obviously much easier than iron sights).
200 yards is still good though.
I have one that I'm in the process of unBubba-ing. Had to order replacement metal and barrel cover on the front. The receiver ring and bridge are drilled and tapped which is ok as I'll be scoping it eventually. If the disc is correct, the barrel is near new.

6.5 Swede in a Sig Sauer STR 200 would be nice to find. Get the 22LR conversion kit for it too.
A small piece of black tape under the rear sight to raise it for fine adjustment works for a quick at the range fix.
try a krag jørgensen at 600 yards, same caliber wuld be fun to see, dont shoot the krag in the rain tho
It's the sights that are to coarse. Rifle and 6,5x55 is a blast. 600m is a very long shot w those sights. Try the diopter or the M41 w a scope.
