How I wish I could've worked with this woman. I'll never forget the first time I saw her company in Germany in the 80's... I hadn't seen work that projected contemporary relationships with such candor. Her choreography seemed to well up from the deepest depths of each dancer, and emerge as if for the first time, it looked almost improvised, but was clearly painstakingly choreographed... Such organic gesture and expression! Spellbinding!

Pina was great. However, I can't stop thinking that smoking excessively went hand-in-hand with a psychological disorder to remain thin with a dancer's body. Anorexia in the dance world is just as difficult as in the fashion industry. The body, in dance however, is seen as something more than in fashion because of the skill, training and technique. The athletic, gymnastic ability would maintain a fitter body and I do not discredit this. The fun, the eyes-closed moments and the skill in the detail and joyful (The Chilean movement) is inspirational.

Without the cigarettes she would probably have lived 10 years longer or more. Same goes for Serge Gainsbourg. Sad.

Selten die gleiche Leier, würde ich sagen. Ich habe ihre Produktionen dreimal gesehen und genossen. Für mich waren sie immer eine fantastische Überrraschung.
