    • @periachi4961
      @periachi4961 10 месяцев назад +4

      I can name a couple... lol. Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, fuckin Yngwie (genuinely surprised he didn't make the list, he's like 90% of the reason why sweep picking is so well known), Holdsworth, Guthrie, I can go on lol.
      Edit: can't believe I forgot to mention my 2 favorite guitarists after Eddie and Randy... Marty Friedman and Chuck Schuldiner are both missing! (Chuck I honestly expected to be left off, but Marty? Seriously?)
      Should mention Shawn Lane, Frank Gambale, and Dave Mustardstain as well.

      RS hasn't been relevant for decades. They are so woke now, I wouldn't read or do I care about the list.
      I was curious were Eric Clapton placed?
      He's usually at least top 10 every poll I've seen.

    I stopped reading and buying Rolling Stone magazine decades ago, because they have people writing articles
    which many do NOT have any idea what they are doing. This "List" is just one example. It is ridiculous.
    They need to hire people who REALLY KNOW what they are doing and people who really KNOW music from all genres.

    Obviously they went for diversity and inclusion over talent. Also apparent is that they have zero knowledge of either fingerstyle or classical guitarists. These should actually be considered among the greatest simply because they are one-man bands, and don't rely on anyone backing them up. For example, Leo Kottke, Phil Keaggy, Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges, Tommy Emmanuel; their output equals or exceeds anyone on the list. To omit them demonstrates pure ignorance.

      Yeah in Steve Vai, Dimebag Darrell, Pat Metheny, Slash, Rory Gallagher, and Nuno Bettencourt not even being ranked in the top 100, Eric Johnson wasn’t even in the top 200, not to mention the people that weren’t even on the list like John Petrucci, Jason Richardson, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustain all of the guitarists from Megadeth for that matter, Yngwie Malmsteen, Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, Gary Moore, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, and many many many other people it’s absurd.
      Kurt himself didn’t even consider himself to be a guitarist, I love Kurt Cobain but his main strength with songwriting notguitar playing he mostly just copied the melodies for his solos. He wasn’t bad by any means Nirvana has a lot of awesome riffs but he is nothing compared to someone like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai who he is ranked above

    I think the doubling-up pieces are also kind of a half-assed effort. While two people from the same band are great, it's still a "slot" for the "players".
    I also agree (and am glad that Neal can talk shit about them) about Neal being left OFF the list. Of the talents, creative spirits and driving forces over the years - wow.
    Thanks for your perspective and video! Subbed and eager to watch more.

    So for full disclosure, I don't know about half the people on this list. I would imagine the author hasn't heard of my guys that were omitted - Joe Pass, Tommy Emmanuel, Rik Emmett, Stochelo Rosenberg, Andres Segovia, Joscho Stephan, Glen Campbell, Roy Clark. I'm sure I could come up with a lot more if I wanted to go deep. But this RS article just shows how shallow the research was when compiling the list.

    RS accomplished exactly what they wanted- to stir up controversy and getting people talking, even going to their website (and being bombarded with ads). It worked. Even if it is a negative reaction, their name is still being mentioned. The list is trash, there are no measurable metrics, subjective or otherwise. RS is irrelevant, and I think they know that. Hence, the horrible list.

    They have people on that might be incredibly talented, like Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram at 200, but haven't made their mark on music. I'm sure it gets worse the higher up the list we go.
    Let's instead look at people they omitted: No Alexi Laiho, no Dave Mustaine (despite him writing much of early Metallica and of course his own band,) no Marty Friedman (in their defense much of his work is in Japan and Rolling Stone has no idea about the Japanese music scene.) No Kane Roberts but Nita Strauss is on there (some of Alice Cooper's best albums were with Roberts.) Unless they're one of the top 10 or so metal bands in terms of airplay they're not even considered for this stupid list. Here's a great example: Michael Amott is an insane guitarist but Arch Enemy is "too obscure" for Rolling Stone, so no chance of him, but at least Guitar World put him on their top 100 list.
    Only gonna touch a few rankings. I'm not saying she shouldn't be anywhere but Tony Iommi created an entire genre but is stuck at 13 while we have Joni Mitchell at 9. It's not a bad place for Mr. Iommi, but they should have at least been swapped. Eric Clapton only at 35? Sure he's controversial but he's easily top 10/15. Slash is way higher than 105, at least top 50. Lindsey Buckingham is at 110, he should at least have been somewhere in the top 100.
    I understand that at the end of the day 250 is still a small number if we want to discuss great guitarists, and Rolling Stone wanted to represent different genres and have representation across race and gender lines, but it's still a bad list. It's great to expand consideration to people who aren't just white men, but there's plenty of great black guitarists on the list that truly deserve it and would have been on there anyway.

    • @PaperBanjo64
      @PaperBanjo64 3 месяца назад

      They didn't even need to include black guitarists either nobody has heard of or that nobody will remember in 20 years...there's a loooooong list of talented black guitarists everyone knows, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix (duh) George Benson Chuck Berry, Lenny Kravitz, etc, so anyone who knows even the slightest about guitar knows most of them so no need for representation for the sake of it when it's organically found.

    Alan Holdsworth. Rocky George. Jeff Hanneman. To name a few. The fact that Robert Fripp and Alex Lifeson are at numbers 58 and 59 tells you all you need to know about the compilers of this so called list.

    They did not put Angus and Malcolm at 38. I never really gave rolling stone any attention and I don’t think I will after this. It's more important to be a famous artist that can hold a guitar and write songs then an influencer to a million guitar players. To be totally frank how many women on the list could share a stage with Joe Pass, Yngwie, Neil Schon or Guthrie Gowan and show similar skills??
