La Lupe deserves so much more credit for being a pioneer
In my family gatherings and parties in Puerto Rico we always listened to La Lupe and Celia. That was early to mid 1960s into the early '70s. Both were great but our favorite was La Lupe because of the intensity, drama, attire, fun remarks she made and the whole crazy persona. She was like a rock celebrity.
She was very, very popular and her songs were played on the radio all the time. Her live shows were very special and in fact, unpredictable. She would start removing her shoes, pieces of clothes, jewelry and starting cursing and making funny sounds. Sort of like a spiritual possession. It was pure, raw power not seen before. One of her idols was Edith Piaf, who has quite dramatic too. Listening to La Lupe brings back great memories of my childhood with the great food and dancing until midnight in the barrios of Santurce (area of San Juan)

La Lupe es cubana, estudio magisterio pero se decidio por la musica. Comenzo su carrera cantando en varios locales de La Habana. Nacio el 23 de diciembre de 1939 en el barrio de San Pedrito, en Santiago de Cuba. Su carrera se consolido en Nueva York. Acumulo una gran fortuna. Compro la lujosa mansion que se construyo Rodolfo Valentino en los años veinte en New Jersey. Murio en la miseria a los 53 años. Una calle del Bronx de N.Y lleva su nombre.
Puerto Rico la adoro.
Esta mujer llena de orgullo a la raza latina, oir su canto es sensacional, y la energia que tenia al cantar y la emocion y todo lo que la distingue como artista hace a La Lupe unica. Amada y querida por muchos. De verdad que me lo gozo toito al verla cantar. Viva La Lupe!!!

I was 10 years old in 1970 when I first saw La Lupe on WXTV, Channel 41 in my hometown, Jersey City, NJ. I was just turning the channel because I found U.S. programs so boring. All of a sudden, I found this woman with so much fire and energy. And I thought to myself, "I've got to get in on this!!!!" Ever since that day, I've watched Spanish entertainment shows and telenovelas!!! Because of my Spanish TV encounter, I was blessed to see: La Lupe, Iris Chacon, Xuxa, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Julio Iglesias, Juan Luis Guerra & 440, Mecano, Juan Gabriel, Miguel Bose, Paulina Rubio, Natalia Lafourcade, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Celia Cruz, Sheila E., Mana and Gloria Estefan!!! I owe a tremendous debt to the Latin American culture which has broadened my knowledge so, so much!!!! The immigrants just want the jobs that ordinary Americans refuse to do!!!! The immigrants deserve to be treated with dignity and respect!!!

Artists as wondrous as she was we don't get too many, but thank God we had her even for just a little while, she still touches many hearts today. She fills me with pure Joy. I saw La Lupe perform on TV for the first time when I was 10 years old in the Dominican Republic back in the mid 60's while she was on tour there. The impact she made in me has lasted to this day. I was totally floored and mesmerized by her indomitable energy and talent. Lupe, wherever you are, thank you for you gift to us. You will always be loved, and never forgotten.

She denied and no one ever come forward with evidence that she use illegal drugs and antianxiety medications although habituating are not ilegal.She died of a heart attack at home while working on some religious music arrangements. Gave her spirit to God before her very premature death.

Celia and Lupe or their partners werent around to give accounts on the show, I don't like the way they focused on drugs her life was so much more than that, her music alone and spiritual beliefs...it was storylinish to me!

She feels the music when she sings. It's like she sees the notes. I feel them and see them through her. She is amazing. I wish Netflix would have found someone true Color to play here like they did for Celia and Pedro
