- "This is a short I shot with Lauren Velez as La Lupe. If you don't know who La Lupe is, she was a legendary salsa singer from Cuba in the 1960's. Strong, independent, yet tragic artist. Her music loomed large in my home when I was a kid. It was Lauren's idea to do it. Her passion for La Lupe runs deep. She also played La Lupe on stage in New York. She did a fantastic job. I am disappointed that the Movie was never completed it seems. I loved listening to her as young Girl in my Mother's home. Her voice and music were so hypnotic. Lauren did a phenomenal job, portraying her from what I've seen in this clip.
She is perfect playing La Lupe. This documentary should be finished. Hey someone tell Netflix they should honour this Cuban artist.
I remember La Lupe walking into the Cuban sandwich shop on 137th & Bway. It was 3 AM & she had just finished her set at the Habana - San Juan Nightclub across the street. She quietly ordered her food & ordered sandwiches & coffee for all the customers present. No fanfare & no loud entrances , she was a kind and humble soul . I know that she is in heaven.

She always appeared at NYC s Corso on Sun. nights. She would openly mingle at the bar with the patrons . La Lupe didn t suffer from the superiority complex like many so called stars do. She dressed elegantly, but conservatively. circa late 70s. RIP Yoli.

It is a shame to see that the latin music industry has forgotten her and have not praised her work like it deserves to be praised few artist like La India have done tributes to her in her albums. Anyone that knows music knows La Lupe and her legendary status in music because she was unique in her style of singing and stage presence that cant never be forgotten.Long Live La Queen of Latin Music Soul!!!

La Lupe was unequivocally unique, a gem. She was able to fill space time with her energy embedded in her voice, that voice full of tears, full of brief joy -that metallic resonance of her bare soul..Long Live La Lupe! all else is "Teatro"

This so needs to come out. La Lupe's story and music is just extraordinary. I actually took flowers to her grave in the Bronx on her 20 year anniversary. It's crazy to me because La India never mentions her and has redone so many of her songs. That's how I actually found out about La Lupe. I looked up "Que Te Pedi" because La India made it over and La Lupe came up. Now I am a die hard fan.

La India can’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as La Lupe or Celia Cruz. With such a title you’d think she’d promote salsa...but no. A mediocre artist like her hasn’t put out an original album in years and has been mute on the subject. La Lupe and Celia, true royalty of salsa, Queens in their own right.

Wow!!! Watching this clip gave me chills! It was like watching the real video in which La Lupe sang en "El Show de Mirta Silva" Even the wardrobe looks authentic. Awesome work!!! Lauren is the best!!!

The songs remind me of my youth when I really didn't appreciate this music now that I'm older a father and a grandfather I'm constantly looking for music like this how beautiful is our Latin culture they will never be music like this ever again I'm just glad that I was brought up listening to it

There should have been no competition btw them because they botha re talented but La Lupe had soul in her music and everything she sang my goodnesss just gave me goosebumps.I am so happy that a movie is being made about her life and that the world will get to know more abt this legendary musician and vocalist. She elft behind a great legacy of music for new generations to come.Who better than Velez to play her!!Great job...I will be out to support this project whenever it comes out.

La Yiyi (Lupe) used to rehearse behind my house with Lalo Rodriguez in Carolina Puerto RIco. This actress just made me remember all that. It is not about being or looking identical while in character but, it is more important to pull the audience into the story and Mrs. Lauren Velez did a great job.

Now this is cool. La Lupe's story is tragic and needs to be told. I'm a big fan of Fania and what happened to the musicians that totally revamped Salsa to new heights is a shame. I hope this story does for her what El Cantante did for Hector Lavoe.
Wow La Lupe went through it with Celia Cruz, Tito Puente. I guess she felt she needed to be up there with them. WHY NOT, BACK THEN US LATINOS SHOULD HAVE HELPED EACH ONE. THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR EVERYONE. I AM GLAD SHE GAVE HER LIFE TO THE LORD. LA GIGI IS ABSOLUTELY AN ICONICA LEGENDARIA.
I can't wait to see this movie. I hope is becomes available on DVD also. I was born in New York and moved to LA in 1958, I saw La Lupe with Tito Puente in person and was blown away. Please do this soon.

So it took me 5 days to watch, Celia! I ugly cried for Lola, Celia and Pedro! Omg, did Lola go through hell! I’m just very confused. I thought Lola died in 1992 but in the movie, they had her die of suicide/DO and it seemed like it was in the 2000’s. I thought her obituary said she died, of a heart attack. I’m still trying to find this Lauren Velez version. All I know, is she was AMAZING! Her voice was mesmerizing and unique. I’ve heard her music but never knew her back story until about a week ago! Now all I’m doing is researching her. She is fascinating and I can’t get enough of her. Rest in Heaven beautiful lady. I’M A FAN FOR LIFE!

There actually was a documentary made about La Lupe by filmaker Ela Troyano which is titled "La Lupe Queen of Latin Soul". The Documentary was shown on PBS more than several years ago.

Wow I have to say that I was not around for the time that La Lupe was at the height of her career or even after but I always heard her music growing up in my house. She was very well loved by the PR.I always read things abt her and Celai being rival and of course she might have not been the Queen of Salsa but she was known as the Queen of Latin Music.

On Celia the series, many of the things that Lola did were based on the stories and rumors of what La Lupe did such as her drug addiction, which is nonsense, also in the series Lola was sexually abused by her stepfather, La Lupe was never abused nor did she have a stepfather, Lola committed suicide, La Lupe did not, she died in her sleep of a heart attack.

I learned from another video posted on RUclips that La Lupe was practically pushed aside when Fania choose Celia Cruz instead of La Lupe for their female star..
It bothered me to learn that because I always loved La Lupe & I grew up in Puerto Rico listening to Fania All Star. I was unaware all those years that had they chosen differently and perhaps signed them both La Lupe's career would have taken a whole different direction. Don't get me wrong, I also love Celia, she was also great R.I.P.
