I saw a quote once, and I'll paraphrase it badly. The difference between a hero and a villain is in how they respond to experiencing pain. A villain feels pain and lashes out, inflicting pain on others. A hero experiences pain and wants to help others who experience it too or stop them having to. Pretty obvious which one Ren is.
Very well said!
I think you may have paid Ren the biggest compliment ever when you said, “My life is better” after seeing his video. I loved your reaction!
Hey Tara, thank you for your kind comment! Indeed this video just brought me happiness and fullfillment, the joy of finally finding great art!
Subbed! One of the Best Reactions!
I am the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope. What a freaking line
Been in the Ren Rabbit hole for 6 weeks and am still finding stuff that blows my mind. Only today I found children of the moon, are there no boundaries to his versatility and creativity. I’m in my 50s, I’ve been around and it takes a lot to get my attention musically nowadays, it’s all so generic and boring. Then along comes this guy and it has reignited my passion for music and musicianship
Ditto to you Danny, I will turn 74 in a couple weeks, I have seen and heard almost all there is, Ren has gotten me excited to listen to music again and be inspired again. Waiting, seemed futile, for a new talent, a genius, to have me "feeling passion" again.
Also 52....and the strength and courage and perseverance this lad has consistently had to muster to continue his craft, and utilize the Gift he's been given along with a curse of sorts in the misdiagnosis of Lyme disease for far far to long to ultimately worsen into Autoimmunity is beyond Remarkable.....For a kid in Brighton to have a Contract with Sony at his fingertips...only to be taken away because of the incompetence of the Doctors that simply weren't thorough enough in their diagnosis....and creating themselves a more sick Ren than was to begin with in the administration of medication on top of medication cocktails.....this is in my observation the Pig Masked figure that is portrayed in his videos.... The Medical Quacks....Those with prescription tablets to just use ink on....and perhaps a smidgen of Therapists, psychologists...and Big pharma itself.
I watch a lot of reaction videos, and a month ago I kept seeing people reacting to Hi Ren. I kept ignoring it, in the same way I've been ignoring Dimesh reactions. Then, youtube chose it for me as an autoplay thing, Mind blown. So I watched the Jenny, Stitch, Violet trilogy. What was left of my mind, blown again. I think I've now watched everything. Even borrowed a headset thing to watch the 360 of Jenny and Screech. Ren is like a 21stC Shakespeare.
@Ada M. Happy birthday, Ada. Mine was the 6th. I turned 66 and am Ren obsessed .
@@motaman8074 17th for me. Yup. St. Pats Day, I wish I was '17' again so I can start over, knowing what I know now. LOL
Minute 2, " I hate that guitar."
Minute 4, " I love this so much."
Minute 7, " I'm about to cry."
2 minutes of silence
9:13 seconds, "wow! Wow wow wow!"
In a nutshell 😂🤣😂
Him: "Is it a song? Is it a short film?" Me: "It is everything."
I said the 1st time I saw him he is a modern minstrel. Someone calls it Bardcore.
But I agree it us everything
I said the same thing haha
It's a night at the theatre.
I answered, "Yes."

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

"I think my life is better now - after watching this"
What a great reaction, all you need to say!
You did a great job reacting. I’m a 54 year old woman and I too struggle with inner dark thoughts. I think one of the reasons this song resonates with so many is because he shows us courage to be vulnerable.
You said "making art is about making friends around the world". I've never heard somebody put it in this way, but it really clicked with me. As an artist, our real goal is to reach people and tell a story through artistic communication. It doesn't just boil down to the mechanics of composing a song or painting a piece of art. Thanks
It's all about connecting :)
When I'm making my solo music, I'm always considering how the reaction of the listener will be, and how each song can serve a purpose connecting my experiences and reflections to the ones the listener will also endure. At the end, we have to dig deep inside ourselves to find that common ground with other human beings.
I always criticize the fact that there are so many musicians that practice a lot and can play all the notes up and down in all the tempos, but when it comes to communicate they never have something valuable to say. Most of my favourite musicians are kind of raw and make stuff from the heart.
Thank you for your comment Jeff!
@@patroden That's what I thought, too. Striving for perfection and expanding your technical skills is important, but it doesn't make you an artist. If you use those skills and that repertoire to express your inner self so that other people can grasp what you want to express, you are a good artist.
But if you are able to relate to other people and even communicate with them through the art, you are a great artist. Then there is not only beauty in art, but also meaning.
And Ren is certainly a great artist.
He has very good skills and a wide range of techniques. And he uses them very well to express himself and connect with other people without being restricted to any boundaries.
I have been binge-watching reaction videos on Hi Ren for the last two weeks and I can't seem to stop. Watching people's reactions to this Message which I can not explain other than the Truth. I find myself in tears every time I see when someone 'gets' the Message. It is the entire Gospel of Christ in one song. First, we just sing along, then the inner battle, then Satan reveals himself and then Christ comes and Stands up in authority over us and claims us to be redeemed. Our Saviour and Eternal Hope. And finally, it is ok. Because we have been made to be trailed and tested, we are human.
Revelation 3:20
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."
Not digging the religious stuff but I know what you mean
Ren actually identifies as agnostic.
"It's about making friends around the world" - pretty well sums up the whole Ren experience. Haven't been as excited by music for so long, and my incessant trawling through reaction videos to his music has taken me on such a journey into different music genres and people.
Nice reaction, you understood what was going on almost immediately.
Brace yourself for the arrival of the Reniverse Renegades Ren Reaction Caravan, it won't take long. 🤣
It's getting to be like a Grateful Dead World Tour at this stage, and we're all chugging along in our VW camper vans, following "Hi Ren" around the planet.
Wherever we park up, you'll find we gather around the campfire and chat amiably and pretty openly about every problem under the sun.
It's cathartic. Ren does that to people.
So pull up a chair, grab a beer and join us.
Don't be afraid, we don't bite, unless you ask us really nicely. 😁
What a wonderful description! I will certainly join everyone around the campfire. 😀🔥
@@JennyAnton Welcome Jenny, it's a magic campfire, there's room for thousands. 😀
This is my umpty-eleventh leg on the tour, and I've only spotted two or three trolls lurking in the long grass in all that time.
That's pretty amazing considering the level of toxicity on social media in general.
Ren facilitates the biggest group therapy session in the known universe. I think I've found my people.
Wow! I would love to witness that!

I have been taking people to see Ren playing live in Brighton for a few years now so it’s great to see everyone else getting on board.
@@JennyAnton Lucky you! Not jealous at all. Nope, definitely not.
Loved your reaction.
I don't have your technical knowledge of the difference in sound between a plugged-in acoustic and one that is amplified by a microphone.
But it's possible that Ren made his choice because he felt this sound fit the struggle between him and his shadow. It could also be because this was filmed and recorded live, and a visible microphone would have broken the fourth wall as well as affecting his ability to move around, especially at the end.
In any case, it sounded pretty damn amazing to me!
Tears are healthy for men
Thank you for supporting Ren! He deserves it!
Ren is deep, creative, versatile, vulnerable, poetic, and all-around genius! Please keep reacting to his creations!
I lo your reaction ❤ It's performance art performed by a multi-talented, creative genius. No joke. It's also autobiographical . He was very sick with Lyme Disease for ten years, still is I believe. He .does it all with excellence. "Chalk Outline", "sick Boi", "how to be me with Chinchilla., "the hunger" and "I shot the sheriff' will all blow your mind. There's another performance art piece called "Jenny, Screexh and Violet's tale" you don’t want to miss either. 🤙🏽
Hey Diane, thank you for your knowledge! I will go through the work of Ren in the next videos :)
Oh wow. I have watched so many reactions to this song and I LOVED yours ! So emotional and so honest
Thank you so much Sammy! I'm glad to have you here
I hope you journey into REN.
I love watching people take that journey.
You won't regret it for a minute.
He does it all, sic rap, beautiful melodies, and stories that will twist you up.

From the moment I was drawn in to this piece of art, I have found that I really enjoy watching the way others react to it… maybe it gives me some comfort and peace knowing that I am not the only one who had such an intense emotional connection. This is my very first comment on a reaction video. Reason being, out of the sea of people I have observed, you described the conflict in exactly the same way that I did… I haven’t stopped thinking about the message that Ren delivered in such an unexpected yet impeccable way 😮
@Patroden Studio
The following was collated by Jens Randolff so props to him for that.
Here is a little bit about his background, in case you don't know already. I gathered it from an old newspaper interview and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician born in Wales on March 29 1990. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which lead him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren and not pull a "Sony" on him as he undergoes his treatment. Check out his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmuni
this is so heartbreaking. I hope we can all together fight alongside and help him through this crap.
Thank you so much for the insight, I will talk about this in the next videos and share his campaign
@@patroden I, like you, feel that people need to know what lies behind some of his songs/art to understand him better.
8:56 Funny you should mention that. Just continue down this particular rabbit hole and you shall see :D
Loved your reaction at the end. Please check out Jenny, Screech and Violets tale ( in that order altogether), Chalk Outlines, The Hunger and his band The Big Push.
Chalk Outlines! I just found that one a day or so ago and I'm loving it! Ren has so many amazing songs though.
Thank you Hilary! I will check all of them out!
I think all of our lives are better for having Ren in it
Yesss. Here for more Ren! The Tale of Jenny & Screech (full)!! Please!
Welcome to the cult! It is quite atrip and comes with a great group of reaction nomads. Will you look at more of his music?
Thank you! I will go through his work indeed!
How the HELL did this song not win a Grammy? As far as I know, it was never mentioned. The system must be corrupt if a song this good isn't considered.
grammys are overrated
I love the way you began by saying "This started out really normal... Apart from the wheelchair, the setup, and the pig mask..." 😆 I guess from a metal background that's not quite as unusual as it is in other genres!
Hope you do more Ren, would love to see your perspective on the trilogy of tales (Jenny, Screech, Violet - the order is important and Ren has a 'full' version with all 3 in 1.)
"I think my life is better now!" is such a vote of confidence. :)
For a young man in his mid-twenties to show such a grasp of matters which some people *never* gain, shows he's been through a lot over those last ten years he references in this piece. I say "piece" as calling this a mere song would be ignoring the staging, the character acting.... it's really a profound, condensed, intense, one-man-show imho.... & *what* a one-man-show it is!! :)
Ren's so zen, a gentleman, a one of a kind with a mind as sharp as Screeche's knife
now I want to interview him
I read this as a rap.
@@Kickstandsup83 Yeah, I have a compulsion that I am compelled to with rhyming when I write. I don't think it's right and I don't think it's wrong, I draw my inspiration from pulling a bong 🤔😊
Wonderful reaction. Please go to his community page and go back a few months. Ren is living in the middle of a painful story and he’s not out of the woods yet. Having the context of his medical struggles and treatment and his experience as a young artist being signed by (and then dropped by) Sony due to his illness will greatly enhance your understanding of his work.
He’s a once in a generation artist I think. I’ve been a musician for 35 years and I still struggle to wrap by head around the depth and variety of his skills. Guitar, piano, writing and producing, rapping, singing, acting, planning the elaborate live 1-take videos, busking in London and Brighton with his band (The Big Push), all while being incredibly ill. 🤯
I also appreciate when people realize he’s doing it live (and in one take). According to the director that was the 4th take, and the video was made for less than 1,000 pounds. 🤯
Thank you for your insight Jeff!
This is such an interesting person, just by seeing the art he is bringing out we can see there is a lot of life experiences that are worthy to share with the world.
Crazyyyy!
PD: let's get rid of record labels please
This song has so so many nuances to it. It is not just a song. This is a piece of living art. But it also has a deeper or wider message. I have watched 10 different reactions, yours included of course. But nobody seems to have picked up on it. The song is very much about his own experiences and how he delt/is dealing with them himself. However, there is a line: "And You know how I know I will prosper? Because I am standing here BESIDE you today". He could have very easily used "standing here before you today". I believe he chose BESIDE deliberately. You don't need to go through it alone. And if you see somebody going through it, don't let them go through it alone. "We are (all of us) human beings" after all!! ❤ This is one of those "once in a generation" pieces. Beautiful.
I don't think he was talking to us he was talking to Ren. The 2 sides of the coin standing side by side. The pendulum..
From the streets and mental illness comes a life changing performance. My life has changed.
Thank you for knowing how to sync audio and video! A rare skill among reactors. xD
Great reaction overall, very good thoughts.
Also I like your beard! Very clean point under your chin.
P.S. As for the guitar... yeah, it's not the most super-clean sound. He isn't even all that careful about tuning it, and he often plucks the bass strings so hard the extra tension from the vibrational energy makes the notes sharp.
But Ren moves _a lot_ while he plays. Usually walking from one place to another, outdoors, in the cold (which will demolish tuning in a hurry anyway), so it's much more important that everything that captures his performance is _on_ him, physically, totally mobile. It's more than a worthy sacrifice of some sound quality for that level of meaning and performance art. He's also a busker, as I'm sure you've discovered since this, so in some sense, that kind of portable "just set up on a street corner and play" is the kind of gear he _has._
He's a guerilla artist, making use of what he has in ways that make stuff with a million times the budget or more look pathetic.
I've seen a ton of reactions to this song, yours was one of my favorites for sure. I really like the dichotomy of you're attitude in the beginning ( well, I prefer an acoustic guitar be mic'd up rather than plugged in but lets see what happens...lol, it's ok, I used to work in a sound studio, I feel the same way) to your total transformation by the end, and being in awe, like I was the first time I saw it. I especially liked your comment after Ren said he didn't care about the radio, but his music was connecting with people. I know you were struggling a bit to express yourself, but I knew exactly what you meant, and it was profound, music does connect us all, it's a way to meet friends, ones that are on the same frequency, such a beautiful way to think about it.
Not sure it was an interview or what, but I once heard Sully Erna, lead singer of Godsmack, say the most moving thing about music I ever heard, I'm paraphrasing, hope I do it justice. Oh, he was talking to a auditorium full of middle school students........What is a single note plucked on a guitar, or tapped on a piano? Well scientifically it's simply the shaking of that string, at a certain frequency or speed, which pushes waves of molecules and atoms in the air, which the fine hairs in our inner ear drum sense and it sends an electrical impulse to our brain in the form of a tone or note. Why is it then, when you put a bunch of those notes together in different ways and formations and play them at different speeds and pitches, that those simple invisible waves can draw such emotion from our depths, something so seemingly simply can bring tears, profound joy, fear, pride, or just about any emotion we are capable of? Well I don't have the answer really, but what I believe is, that it's the universe's way of telling us that we belong, that we are all children of star dust, and the magical waves we call notes and music, were meant to bring us together, and connect us as humans, through a universal language..........
Sorry, I just always loved that explanation, and your comment during that part of the song reminded me of it and I just wanted to share it with you. Great reaction, take care, cheers!
Hey Sunshyn, I'm glad my reaction clicked with you! I was in doubt about publishing this video, because the reaction is 100% real and while editing the video I saw how naive and dumb I am at the beginning, commenting about the audio and then the whole thing flips like a pancake.
But I set myself to be honest and published it anyway, this is for me a conversation, where we all learn someting and make our brains more colorful!
What you mention from the singer of Godsmack is indeed great wisdom. Art is magic, an extra dimension of reality in which we all tap in and out, like a portal to somewhere far away in the universe.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, I appreciate it a lot!
Most of us have been left speechless and emotional at the end. This is a true story. Discovering the details will amazie you as you dig deeper into Ren.
your perspective on this track was very insightful and using the drums to censor yourself was dope.
Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person
A walk through the human psyche!Nobody does what Ren does like he does it very thankful! and I very much like an appreciated your reaction🌿💔
I LOVE that every music producer that reacts to this immediately notices it is a live performance. Very, very few others due. No judgement on them, it isn't their specialty.
But you music producers never disappoint!
Huh? Just about every reactor knows that it was live.
@@stevenmeyer9674 ok.
Even the opera singers whose voices are never amplified notice the mic and the whole thing is live.
@@jeffstumpf9129 I am curious here. Why do and Steve here two put so much energy into denying me my experience? Not quite sure what you are getting out of it. I hope it fulfills you though. I hope it brings you joy.
Just about every reactor knows its live. Fail.
Loved your Reaction, you are right the guitar sound was harsh but i think it was deliberately recorded like that to create an uneasy sound for the listener, filled with Diminished Chords and Dissonant Sounds, The Devil's Interval, all done Deliberately to create an Atmosphere of the Chaos inside Rens Head while he was so ill
I love how when it starts reactors are hesitant... like. Okay.. this is going to be lame... but I'll keep going. Then he starts with the story and you can actually watch them getting sucked in. So much so that there's a long pause when he's done and unplugging. Just in case there's more. Love it.
The sentence that almost every reactor says in the first two minutes: "Oh, I didn't expect that".😁
Ren was misdiagnosed for 7yrs before they found his Lyme disease, he was treated for mental illness, all this drove him into psychosis. This song Sick Boi and Chalk outlines with Chinchilla relate to his experiences. He is very talented does so many genres Rap,reggae, rock, hiphop and has a band called The big push. He is trying to get well in Canada at the moment.
No technical analysis on this was spot on. Even though I think you were forgetting your credentials before watching the video. I enjoyed this, I think nobody was ready for this the first time watching. You got your self a subscriber.
Hey David! Thank you so much!
This was really a transformative experience. Looking forward for more!
"Is this a song or a short film?" Yes
LOl
Love the raw emotion, that's what music is supposed to do touch the soul .....the Ren has many of those that grab you ...another for me that's all truth in most minds and really deep is Ren "do you believe"
Great reaction!I
Was surprised you didn't mention your both sporting the Peaky Binders hairstyle.
I thought the guitar tone was great for this video but understand your comment about it.
The nylon strings are nice.
Check out his Trilogy next.
He also plays a great electric, raps and sings, amazing diversely talented artist..................
The initial guitar piece was played progressively more harsh purposely it was representing the chaos that would come.
Ren is about to take over the music world!
I hope so!
The Big Push!
-never have I felt like crying so much to something that ultimately isn’t even sad-
I sincerely appreciate your honesty... I don't have the same feeling for the plugged in acoustic but you right away showed us you are real... not afraid and will not easily bend to the masses for the likes. That is needed. We spend to much time hiding behind filters and walls when we should be having calm, real dialogue. Sub'd. [edited because I cant type as fast as I think]
Ren is absolutely stunning and captivating !!
Ya, Ren made me want to dance for the first time in ages.
I bet he's helped many people with this magnum opus.
#ren is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
BB King said, "I think once something has been exposed, anyone can add or take from it as they like."
Nothing is going to come from it if they don't have the talent anyway.
you held back the tears when i got to that point I couldnt I cried while smiling
I’ve had many experiences with dmt that mirrored the structure of this song. I experienced rapid flashes of thousands of images that bounced back and forth between every instance of pain, chaos and malevolence along with every instance of nurturing and good will. They flashed so quickly; and all the while a grandparent-esk entity “sat” present with me impressioning me to integrate the images together. It broke me apart because I couldn’t find a way to reconcile them. I was taught from such a young age that duality (good and evil) are irreconcilable forces. I was led to believe the universe is divided against itself. This made sense because physical forces work oppositionally to allow nature to become. (Ex. Newtons 3rd law of motion.) The resolve in this divide, much like this song, was felt emotionally and not merely as a proposition to be believed. I realized at that point that every instance in my own life that I had aspired toward goodness came from my reaction to the pain and suffering of others. I feel very deeply that I don’t want others to suffer the way I have and because of this I will give my life to lift up every human being that comes into my life. I don’t believe this choice would have the same weight or significance if it weren’t for the duality. Which (IMO) is expressed to perfection within this song. Bravo to Ren and thank you for you reaction. ❤
Loving your words, gonna reflect on them
I think the classical guitar sounded great.
It is art!

This is the most awe inspiring performance art I have seen. It has everything that is organic. He is a poet, artist, rapper, director, producer. The dichotomy of perspective from an internal struggle made me sit in wonderment at what I was watching around truth and understanding of self. First time I have sat back speechless. Then I explored his back catalogue and I was blown away. He is a genius and unique. I really hops he gets some solace with his treatment in Canada. Not many if any RENs about and I have only found a few in my 60 yrs of listening. I am so affected by this performance that it has changed my perspective on life the has not happened since my teens. True art #ren 🔥
I love your comments on how art is baring your soul. well said and every musician needs to hear and understand that. Do covers, in your own way!
Thank you!
We can all learn the techniques and the theory and also practice million hours, but if we have nothing meaningful to say, the piece of art will just strand in the shore and never sail.
Yes
Beginning of reaction = don’t like the guitar…
End of reaction = 😭😭😭
😂🤣😂🤣😂
But this is what so is amazing about this song, this performer, this monologue, this piece of art.
It is just hitting so many people so hard in so many different ways.
And even though it takes everyone on an emotional rollercoaster, as you said - we all feel better for it at the end.
This song and everything about it is just so special 👏👏👏👏

Ren puts musical creativity and acting talent on full display in "Ren - The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full)" It is three songs sung one after the other which form a musical trilogy. It is an almost Shakespearean tragedy in song. The version Ren posted has " (full)" in the tittle. It's stunning
Holy s%&t ! This sounds so intriguing, gonna dive into it!
