it's an old habit from the '90s, it helps the editor to find the footage he wants to use, when he is fast forwarding the tape

haha kinda feels annoying also.
The proper term is called marking your clip. Most HD cams you can go clip by clip and find the makes and what not but on a tape(which is what a vx uses), you gotta capture the entire tape at once for the most part. So if you got a 3 hour tape, that’s 3 straight hours you gotta go thru to find the tricks hence marking the clips you wanna keep comes into play

Im an old timer and I dont either. Care to share some insight with an OG?
Since older style cameras such as the vx use tapes, it plays back in one long continuous shot. So in order to make editing easier when going through the hours of footage, they “mark” the clip by putting their hand in front of the camera after a land. So basically when fatforwarding all you need to look for is a hand and you know there is a land.
Fingering Things my friend and I would use a “half hand” (which is a clenched fist) for tricks we landed really sketchy and wanted to keep trying.
@@poopmatt that makes sense. When I was a kid I had a local board sponsor and I do remember the VHS editing gear the owner had but I definitely missed this finer detail about the editing process. Thanks for being straight up about it 🤙

So that when he (filmer) is fast forwarding through all the footage later (while editing) he knows where all the makes & hijinks are.

I'm pretty sure so they know where to edit when going thru editing on fast forward going thru 100's of bails.
for when reviewing footage he can know when the "makes" are by putting his hand in front of the lens as a signal of sorts.
Marking clips to see where the makes are during editing.
