Loved to stumble upon this, we're planning a trip in February. Could you say more about some the hikes you did? We're staying some nights in the south coast, then Nordeste, then near Sete Cidades. We'll be there for 5 days and definitely want to see some waterfalls and lush foliage. Especially trying to find the laurel forests!
Hello Rebecca, this is Marcella, Rapha's gf :) We did the hike to Salto do Cabrito (the one that passes by the powr station), to Salto do Prego, A Barquinha and we also ran around Lagoa de Furnas. In previous trips to São Miguel, I also did the hike to Poço Azul. My favorite parts of the island are Furnas and Nordeste, there are less tourists. Sete Cidades is very beautiful and you should do the trail on the top of the hills around the lagoon, for us this will be for the next time ;) The road from Furnas to Nordeste pasisng by the Southeast of the island is a must in my opinion. You should also take some time to check the little village of Faial da Terra. The area of Mosteiros is also very beautiful and if you are staying near Sete Cidades, you must go there. Hope this helps and enjoy this magic island ✨🍃
It looks really amazing! I'm planning a trip with my girlfriend to Sao Miguel and Santa Maria to do some multiday hiking and was wondering if wild camping is an option. I read on some websites that wild camping is strictly forbidden. What was your expierence with wild camping in the Azores? or would you recomend just booking a campsite or some other accommodation?
Hi Stefan! In our experience, it was no problem (but we were there in winter and might have been breaking some rules, so please don't take my word for it). There are lots of great campsites on the islands, they look amazing and are almost like wild camping, however, many of them were closed during the winter months (which is why we wild camped there). I hope this helps, im sure you can book the sites spontaneously as well if that is better for you! Cheers and have a good one!
