What did they bring home for Friday night?
Footage of the movie "Aliens" being show in the store.
Fun stuff all around...
This one last around 9 minutes.

That was me at 4:36 I'll be 73 this year, man time really flys!
That's so awesome!
how did you know you were in this?
Wow that's incredible! Do you still remember what you did that day ?
What city was this in? How were you made aware they were filming?
It's always weird seeing yourself pop up in a random YT video that appeared in your algorithm; but it happened to me once too.
Browsing the horror section and tripping out on the box art as a kid in the 80's was a thing one doesn't forget. I actually have dreams once in a while about it. Cheers!
Haha same. I remember being fascinated and at the same time disturbed by the video cover of Scanners and The Thing 😱😆
Re animator😢
Best part
So awesome that they’re playing Aliens for the whole store to watch. Definitely not a “wholesome” Blockbuster. People get nostalgic over Blockbuster, but they were the worst! Mom and Pop stores and the lesser known chains were the best!
Not sure how they compared, but I miss Family Video. That's all I knew.
I agree 100%. Blockbuster turned me in to collections for like 5 dollars no joke.
This is a little extreme, in my opinion.
As a kid, we had a video store in our hometown called Rami's. Every weekend, I would rent a game there.
Happy times. You can tell that by the colorful clothes they all wear. Nowadays everyone wears dark colors and stare at their phones all day.
very true. I was 15. Even as a metalhead, we usually wore colors. It was just such a great vibe to be alive back then.
Most people dont notice that..but I noticed it too. Most clothes today are very monotone, as well as the voice ppl use when speaking. Very glib, jaded voice tones nowadays. Misery abound.
I wore dark colors back then Black levis 501s black shirt 58.
This is officially one of my favorite nostalgia channels. Stumbled on you looking into some of my old college jobs. Thanks for the unique content!
Thanks that makes me happy 😊
This channel has great raw footage. It just let's you take in the scene. Whoever had the foresight to film, it's really nice. A note about this video. Even though you can stream everything today. There was just something awesome about having to choose your videos. It made them feel more special imo.
Most definitely. It also gave the family an excuse to hang out with each other. Which after they pass on becomes priceless.
I turned 15 years old Summer of 87. Best year of my life. The 80s were a great time to be a teen/young adult. We had the greatest music, plenty of tech (VCRs/Cable TV/Video games), tons of people still outside on the streets/malls because it was pre Internet, decent cars, America was a fairly united country and kids had tons of freedom to roam. And the middle class lifestyle was very affordable. If you were there, you know what I'm talkin about!
Yeah and like you said in a different video “the country was vast majority still white. That’s why it looks so clean, nice and respectful.”
Glad to know I’m automatically not clean 🤪
Nah, 90s are better
decent cars you had no airbags lol 80's wasnt great as people think
We can't have that lifestyle no more only the rich can have that now. We are living in a dystopian future and it's only getting worst. The Only Way Out is to vote the right people in!
fairly united... that's what happens after a big war like Vietnam that drains the population of young men from a generation. they have no will to fight because they were broken already a decade prior.
1987: Imma stop at the video store.
2022: What’s a video store?
No one wrote "imma" in 1987.
@@Tr0nzoid 😂😂😂👍🏾💯
@@Tr0nzoid Exactly. The evolution of vocabularies over time (in any era) defines one's unique lingo, which is identifiable. I was 12yrs old in 1987, so you can put that into perspective.
Well, some video store still exist in my hometown
They're lumping horror and sci-fi into the same category but giving Woody Allen his own section? That ain't right, guys! That ain't right!
😂😂😂 It is a bit bizarre
It's called jewish privilege
@@vampirerobot AND THEY HAVE 20 COPIES OF MAC & ME !
Woody Allen should have his own section; the dumpster out back.
@@vampirerobot I don't think you guys realize how prolific of a filmmaker Woody Allen actually is. I mean, say what you want about his creepy personal life, but the man is an absolute machine when it comes to making films. He's directed over 50 feature films in his lifetime (having also written all of those titles as well). I mean at the time they were making this video there would have been at least 16 movies people could have rented that were directed by him. And possibly 18, depending on when in 87 this is, as he had 2 films come out in 87 that he directed. He definitely had enough movies out at this time to warrant his own little mini section.
To put the magnitude of his work into perspective, here are the film totals from some other high profile modern directors:
- Spielberg: 36
- Scorcese 27
- Coppola 23
- Nolan 12
You have to go back to the golden age of Hollywood when studios cranked out hundreds of more films a year than they have in the modern era to find directors that match or surpass him in magnitude of directorial feature work.
Those VHS movies cost a fortune to buy in 1987 and now you can't give them away.
And it's the same now with DVD and Blu-Ray.
Sealed VHS Rocky trilogy recently sold for a combined $53,000 at acution.
Sealed VHS Back To The Future sold for $75,000 at auction (and this was only an 80+ grade).
Great memories as a 7 year old kid in 1987 😊.
I was 2 yrs old when this video happened. And this video looks new lol
Wow! I was a freshman in college. Going to the video store and picking out movies was a Friday night ritual for my roommates and me. Pick-up 2-3 movies for a binge watching session, grabbing some KFC and followed by making Jiffy Pop popcorn on the stove. Fun times.
I was 9. Best year ever. I rent Top Gun with my father and it was the coolest movie I've ever seen.
And remember, don't be selfish and rewind the tape before returning.
🤣🤣
you got a small fine where i lived
“Please be kind and rewind”
I would have been 5 in 86. But the video store and renting games and videos was what the weekend was all about. I miss those days.
I still to this day have two video store membership cards both from the 90’s. A Family video one and Blockbuster. Super embarrassing but one time my mom accidentally returned the wrong tape, it was of her giving birth. She was mortified to find the staff member watching it when she realized she still had the tape she had rented at home. It’s a moment I’ll never forget because I was only about 10 years old
You have a very unique and great chanel. Love watching these videos from the 80s and 90s. Brings back so many memories. Subscribed!
Thank you Ryan! Happy to read this.
Literally my new favorite channel... and so many of your videos are now going to be on in the background, like all of the time lol :D Thank you so much for these
Wow! Thanks a lot! Comments like yours make me happy 😄
Video stores were great places. A night out to pick out movies, browse sections, discuss with other customers what were the good and bad movies. Good times.
I’m 29 but I wish we had them days back. Look how calm and more happy people looked. Now it’s rush, rush, rush with lots of stressed out depressed looking people.
The year I graduated high school. Really enjoy watching your videos. keep 'em coming!
Awesome! Thank you for watching.
I absolutely love this channel 😅
Fun fact incase you didn't know. Carrie Henn, Newt in Aliens, never acted in another film. She went on to become a school teacher.
Yeah...I saw a making of the film on Netflix awhile ago...glad she's happy. I know she spent most of the part screaming...but she was a good little actress.
Good to see that she’s in a good place, and seemed to have had parents that respected her wish (“Don’t wanna do acting? K.”).
With so many horror stories of where child actors have ended up in, it’s nice to see one that’s currently just happy/neutral.
@@keybyss98You seem to listen to a lot of conspiracy theories with a tin foil hat.
@@Constanzaaaaaaaaaaaa tin foil hat sums up most of the comments on this channel, which sucks cause these throwbacks are cool.
Oh man I would love to have that TDK light sign in my room!!😄
I grew up in this era too and I ended up loathing video rental stores. The worst one of them all was a regional chain called Hastings which blatantly ripped off customers.
Think of it this way.... late fees were like a Drug for the video rental stores. It was fine in moderation, but some stores ended up abusing it.
Hastings would clear out their Drop box 10-15 minutes before closing. Even if you returned your video five minutes before closing, they would still charge the late fee. Hastings also had an upcharge for not rewinding VHS tapes, even though they checked each tape with an Automatic video tape rewinding tool. I've seen quite a few of these stores randomly charge a late fee, even though the tape/game was returned on time. It got to the point that this "accidently" happened about 1/10 times.
I've also seen these stores claim the tape or game was damaged..... while putting the tape or game back on shelves.
Back in 1993, this one guy I know accidentally returned the wrong video game to a local video game rental store. The correct game was returned about two months later. The local store tried to charge that account $160.
Yeah, what a time to grow up.
Whos says we will never get this time back ,just did 😂😂😂loving it ❤
I was 4 when this was recorded! I loved going to the horror movies and looking at the cassette boxes as a kid.
didnt know woody allen is a genre of its own
it's all movies with little asian girls
I certainly remember (and miss) the days of going to a video store and renting tapes. I remember browsing the horror section frequently. I never saw them, but I remember the VHS cover art for C.H.U.D. and I Spit on Your Grave. 80s VHS (especially the horror and sci-fi) had some of the most memorable cover art!
I totally remember my mom renting Short Circuit 2 because it was being played on those tvs in the video store.
6:43 kids reaction to seeing a camera. 🤣
The only things missing are the Nintendo game rental section and the curtained off ''adults only'' section
😂😂😂
i never did get to back into one of those. now that i’m of age they’re all gone. not that i’m trying to watch old porn, just don’t like being told i can’t go into secret rooms.
Cat's Eye!!such a cool movie!
I miss video stores. They were fantastic for discovery, where no algorithm kept pushing you towards the same shit, like RUclips does.
Boing boing took me here
And they were an excuse to get out of the house and not stay there.
@@vampirerobot pretty badass you got a article on boingboing!
I was ten that year and went to a camp and remember taking two cassettes with me. One of which was the UB40 album that was playing in the background of this video.
1:11 "Want me to fast forward to the gory part? Yea." ALIENS !
This is a real movie store, better than Blockbuster.
6:09 Hardcore Clamshell Collective! The Warner Brothers Clamshell before the rental box insert is one of my favorite designs, and so many good titles done first release that way. Omega Man, Ammity ville, Altered States.
0:32 Empire of the Ants I think? Ridiculous... that is on right now on Comet over the air. Twilight Zone going on here for me lol
5:53 Those in the original boxes sealed = $$$
8:47 Waiting in line to rent something lol Late to the game Red Box. Amazes me that people rent or monthly stream fee anything, no ownership.
Great comment 👍
@@vampirerobot Great Channel Broski! Enjoyable! I sort of live in the 90's and have given up on new things being good, Baby Yoda / Neo-SWars did it. Is the perfect genre next to sci-fi and horror... Woody Allen
🤣🤣🤣
My gosh! That's Alien in 4:3 format 😊 Love it!
I was 9 back then and remember these stores. Renting a video was a summer holiday treat haha. I also remember those big cases😂
I was age 8 in 1987 and I grew up with video stores all around me.When my sister turned age 18 in June-1990 she collected video rental cards and started to rent and purchase movies at our videostore between 1990-1994 and God how we rented and purchased movies.
Horror and thriller movies was our favourites and today I own on Dvd and some Bluray all the good movies we watched back then.I would not miss these video store rental years for anything in the world!
Great movies-Tv shows and music, what a time it was.
this reminded me that around this time 711 had a movie rental area as well which is pretty weird now that i think back.
The way the font is on the signage looks like this was in the 90s. Hard to believe this was 1987.
Pixies - Where Is My Mind? Has absolutely no right being a song from 1988. You'd swear it was '94/95.
I never really went into Blockbuster though I remember when ours shutdown, but going into family video was such a treat. Renting physical movies is so much more special to me than streaming movies. It was a family occasion and you knew that if you didn't watch the movie with your family or didn't watch it within 1-3 days, you wouldn't get it again for a while
blockbuster always seemed too watered down compared to my local store. There is so much hype backing them now, everyone forgot about the local spots and how they almost carried all the greats and not just what was new.
Working in a 1987 video store full time would have been great! Watch movies all day and still get paid for it! Wait now it’s 2023 and most people watch movies at home while working from home….
Im 33. Aliens is my favorite movie. What a treat it would have been to see it when it was new to everyone. Video stores in the 90's only ever ran family friendly films 😂
The 90s were the height of life in the US. Downhill since then

I could have watched the whole of Aliens in this recorded ambiance, so nostalgic.
That damn video store cut all the boxes
Ah yes, the old times when you had to watch the movie you got no matter how bad it sucked because it was all you had--no phones, no VR headsets, and no Netflix to bail you out. I miss that.
I miss the video store VHS 4 life

I think I must have rented out just about every Horror movie in our video store.
Back to my childhood
Good old times. Aliens is my favourite movie ever. 🎦🖤
Be kind! Please rewind!
When a really popular new movie came out it was nearly impossile to find a copy not rented lol
1987 IMO was a great year! Reason being because my aunt was born that year in August and Full House Premiered! , but sadly when Andy Warhol passed away 😢😢
Wooow. Back in the day. I still remember when our dollar movie theater (I miss movies for a buck) had a dollar video store section back in the late 80s when I was living in Arlington, TX. In 1987 I would have been about 10 years old I believe, but I remember it clearly as if it were yesterday.
When I was 4(1986-87), we rented "The Muppet Movie" and I got very upset when we had to take it back.
I think the last time I rented a video was around 2005 or 2006.
With aliens on the tv. Man those were the days
All those cut boxes. Gahhhh! : (
3:06 movie so simple yet a masterpiece
I see yellow bags at the end and it seems to be on a city street rather than a shopping center, UB40’s One in Ten playing as background music, so could this be the video rental department at a Tower Records?
Wow, that little girl who was in her mom's arms is now 37
I liked going to the video store to pick out a movie. Times have sure changed.
I feel sorry for anyone who rented I Spit On Your Grave thinking it was some campy horror flick, that was one of the most deeply disturbing movies I’ve ever seen.
i miss video stores
Carrie is a great movie and The Exorcist is a classic.
Carrie sure is awesome, saw it in a movie theatre the other night!
I wish I could jump into this video!
Memories 😢😢😢😢😢
I miss the Ma & Pa video store
Before Netflix obliterated the entire industry. Blockbuster was its first victim…
The Woody Alen section is of course just a Berenstain Bears Effect rift in space-time
I was 12yo in 1987 and I remember my friends and I were sneaking towards the adult videos and taking a peek at the pictures on the box and yea lol, the rest is history. The fun little adventures and risk being kids in the 80s. 🤷🏽♂🤷🏽♂🤷🏽♂🤷🏽♂🤷🏽♂🤷🏽♂

I have to ask after viewing a few videos on your channel...how did you even find this stuff? It's crazy to think someone had the forethought to just tape mundane activities at the time and it lead to this archiving and future viewing up to 50 years later in some cases on your channel.
It is unedited footage recorded for TV news stories.

I miss block buster video.😢
how did they tell if the tape was available to be rented? was there a tag or something?
It wouldn't be out on the shelf if it wasn't available. So they brought it up to the counter to get their videos.
@@vampirerobot ahhh see places did it all diff
couple places in my day would have tags somewhere on the box or on a hook that meant it was in, no tag not in
then others had a empty box behind the real box meaning it was in, hollywood and blockbuster video style.
they only put tapes that were avail on the shelf.
Aliens!
May I use a piece of this for a featurette?
1:38 lil homie would be around the same age as me (if theyre still alive of course)
C.H.U.D.! GREAT CHOICE, LADIES!
Last shot of the video. Hey, she's holding cigarettes. Then she starts to cough.
What state is this in? 😁 😀
The year my older brother was born
So you could just watch Aliens there in the store as opposed to renting it 😂😂 or did they only show clips of it
8:45 And that's what happens to you if you bring back tapes without rewinding them.
Vampire Robot Hello. I wanted to get permission to use this and some of your other clips of Video rentals for a project I'm planning to work on
Go for it
@@vampirerobot Thanks a bunch. I will credit you
