  • Keith Richards answers a fan question on why he won't use his Gibson ES 350 guitar on stage anymore. He talks some more about electric guitars in general: "You can''t beat the early jobs." Posted on Keith's website (Ask Keith) around 2003: www.keithrichar...

      Hmmm.... there's a mojo to an early 60s Gibson 335 that I've rarely felt with custom shop reissues. Hard to put into words....a springiness, elasticity in the wood that seems soft and resonant. Tried a 63 reissue in Germany a few months ago that came close but so many sound sterile and dead. Often plugged into a good amp you won't notice as a listener but as a player it's obvious to me anyway.

    He knows the truth about guitars. The funyy thing is, if you give the same guitar to Keith Richards, Peter Green, Santana, Eric Clapton, Leslie West and so on, it will sound completely different.

    He seems to have a strange, wonderful, probably unique inability to prevent himself from being utterly profound and perceptive and yet somehow he manages to carry this off with an air of jaded, self-effacing, world-weary resignation, a persistent shrug that says 'I don't really know how, or why and I don't really care', whilst at the same time he effortlessly rattles off priceless gems of deep musical insight driven by an insatiable passion for the work of (other) cranky old musicians and brand new sources of inspiration.

    • @peterfriedman2830
      @peterfriedman2830 6 лет назад

      Hi Jimmy, I just listened to the first track on the Zep playlist on your RUclips channel The song remains the same: wow! Bonham sounds even better (and more manic) than usual and Page's guitar sound has the most 'bite' I've ever heard from him, or anyone else. Keith Richards has said he wasn't generally impressed by Zep, but he had tremendous respect for Bonzo's drumming. As for myself, I sacrilegiously venture to put Bonham's performances ahead of Moon's in the celestial skin-bashing stakes.

      Interesting perspective, Peter. I've always loved listening to Keith expound on any subject. He alternates between sounding like he's in the midst a drug-induced brain fog (or boozy drawl), and dropping erudite witticisms at the drop of a hat. It's pure entertainment. His intellect (and, surprisingly, recall) is impressive. As for his comments on Zep, I seem to recall him saying Bonham was a bit "heavy" (which is not to say that he disrespected his style), and that Plant was "exuberant" (well, his own Mick certainly is). But his most effusive praise (for Zep) was summed up by him simply saying, "Jimmy Page".

      100% Bernie when I was learning. I, like most, wanted to go up the neck and crank an amp and play lead. A seasoned player told me learn rhythm guitar first on acoustic. His parting shot was remember you never hear a rhythm guitar until it stops playing and watch and learn from Keith Richards rhythm playing. That was a valuable lesson I remember to this day

    Keith on the Voodoo Lounge tour (1994 or so) played a Music Man guitar on at least one of two songs per show. I saw a show where he played "Memory Motel" with it. It was blue and didn't have a vibrato. He mentioned in a guitar magazine that he felt it was the best non-Gibson/Fender electric guitar he had played in quite some time. I forget the model. It wasn't the Van Halen one.

    I think at age 57 I'm the last of the generation that would have had living relatives that lived during the purely "acoustical" time of life, my grandma was born in 1898, I know that as a young girl she would not have heard an electric guitar or piano anywhere in Pennsylvania at the time. I thought Les Paul invented the electric, or did he invent the Les Paul? Have to research that. Yeah, electricity came along in history and so did the electric guitar. I doodle on an electric all the time not plugged into an amp, the feel is different from when you pick that big acoustic box up, and every move you make on that guitar resonates acoustically, yep, different approach, but w similarities. Now Keith is truly a gut who is a gifted artist at blending acoustics and electrics for end result sounds that are magical. Wild Horses is an excellent example of that, how he do it? Multiple techniques that bring out the potential in each guitar. An acoustic that is Nashville strung, maybe 2 like that, and maybe another acoustic strung regular, an electric tastefully used, what a song

    Keith Richards LP Black Beauty was stolen, not sure when but Steve Marriot told me in 1978 that after a Small Faces gig a guy tried to sell it to him, he recognised it as it was previously his ( if I remember correctly), told the guy it was stolen and bought it, paying not too much. He called Keith and gave it back to him.

It's not even possible to play many blues or rock styles without overdrive or distortion, it just sounds like hank Marvin without them

    If Kieth Richards gives advice or information about guitars or music, people should listen, because if anyone knows, its Kieth Richards, I don't think he's making it up. I agree when he says the guitar is a strange instrument, they can wield much power in music and can have the ability to attract the Spirit world. This can be a very controversial subject so probably be better to drop it, because the musician would really have to know how to recognize Spirits. This, in turn, could prove to be very dangerous and possibly backfire. I cant think of anything worse than an angry, pissed off Spirit. I have to be very careful, myself, because I believe some Spirits have been following me around but it's probably best not to talk about it now. I just know that listening to, watching, and commenting on clips and videos helps me immensely, keeping me going in a good, positive direction. On the flip side, I believe a very bad, terrible, and incredibly crafty Spirit, very powerful is trying to kill me, I can recognize it, I know it's out there because I can sense it, and I can feel it deep down in my bones.
