The work you're doing to quantify the differences between switches is so useful! First time I feel I can actually make an informed decision as to which switches would suit my preferences. Thanks so much for all the effort!
I think it is important to also mention the effect of the long spring. It feels snappier, and returns faster than a normal spring. It evens feel "tactile," somehow, due to the higher initial force. Might help increase typing speed.
Bought the Oil King because of this review. Love the sound and smoothness of the switch. The bottom out is indeed around 65g only. Thanks for the in-depth review!
As someone new to this I greatly appreciate you quantifying these sounds. Helps a lot to put it in perspective. I wish it existed for all the common brands.
Subbed for all the actual measurements you took, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see actual numbers instead of abstract statements about sound and feel
Wow. Absolutely blown away by the quality of your videos again. You're truly becoming the most accurate and in depth (dare I say already are) place for keyboard reviews. Currently enjoying my Gateron CJ's I got because of you. Kind of dying because I really want to get these even though the difference is minute. I think I'll try to hold myself back but your reviews really make me feel confident when making a purchase decision. Keep it up!!!
I'm so happy with how you made the stem wobble and switch sound comparison, using actual measurements and math to create objective differences. You should definitely keep doing this if you haven't already. It's an awesome idea and really helps us viewers get a better idea of what the switches are like. Liked and subscribed :D
I feel that what sets apart a clone switch manufacturer is when they evolve from simply taking specs given to them by customers, and start to actually do their own R&D to make their own unique innovations to the switch market. Kailh was probably first to get past this point when they created Choc and BOX switches, but Gateron really seems to have taken well to the specific concerns of the enthusiast community, at least as far as they play to their strengths with linear switches (not to mention that Zeal's new Clickiez uses the Cap switch design as it's base). Outemu seems to also be on the cusp of taking this leap, and we may soon be seeing JWK take their own liberties with switch design beyond just the recolors and materials combinations. I'm really hoping that this will lead to even more exciting times ahead for new switches.
I bought some JWK Poseidons a while ago and in the pack I got a singular oil king switch, idk if it's a mistake or a gift on the vendor's side but that one singular switch made me felt the worst buyers remorse ever. I should of gotten the oil kings instead of the JWK and they were cheaper as well :'')
That's crazy, I recently put a whole build together with Poseidons, and they're quite nice lubed and in a board, though I may be biased as it's my first properly lubed build. I am very interested in the oil kings, I may have to get a few to try, but I love the Poseidons, so enjoy them as you have them! And, if you're really wanting some oil kings, perhaps just use it as an excuse to build another keeb, right? :D
The level of scientific enquiry into the stem wobble and pitch of the switch is insane, can't wait to see more of such reviews for other switches (even for those already in the market!)
this should be THE FIRST video you watch getting into keyboards, these are all real scientific explanations to the hobby lingo that needed to be explained years ago! THANK YOU
Actually this is the best keyboard analysis video on RUclips. I wrote a comment on a different author saying his was the best. By the spectrometer and caliper was something I would do my self. Great work my Asian brother
Thank you so much for stopping by Matthew! Yup! Keebsforall is in LA, and I started to buy from them when I was still out there as well... Miss it dearly!
Gateron isn't the only one killing it, Keybored is too! From that intro to the quantitative+qualitative analysis, this is so good it's making me feel like I should just retire as a keyboard content creator. I can't compete lol. Great stuff, as always!
Great to see more concrete numbers being added to switch comparisons! One note, from some recent Gamer's Nexus vids, it seems any time that acoustic measurements are being taken that the device should be placed on a stand or something at a set distance as opposed to being held in hand.
I think the way GN did is the correct way to measure an accurate db reading, but when it comes to the tonality and pitch of the switch, the closer the mic is the better. When closer to the switch tonality and pitch (most likely) drops off/changes over distance. My only critisims for his testing on this part would be that he held the reader in his hand rather than place it on a stand (since vibration and movement of the hand is sure to change the pitch of the reading).
@@JPMedia1 I'm trying to understand the intended tone of your post. The first half makes it sound like you're setting up a refutation of bringing up GN and their methodology with respects measuring sounds from switches. But, the second half of your post highlights exactly the issues that prompted me to bring GN up in the first place.
i have the cj's ended up lubing them (I know it's a no-no but i havent experienced any issues with smoothness, but it hugely improved the sound), and I love love love them. Gateron really has a redemption arc this last year and a half with their more expensive switches.
I don't know why people keep on saying opening up CJ makes it less smooth. I've lubed and spring swapped CJ switches and I'm experiencing 0 problems. I don't know what people are doing to the switch that's making it scratchy after opening it up. Maybe they're adding films to already tight housing causing interference?
This is probably the best switch comparison video i have ever seen, u provided all information you could need to decide which switch u like and went into more depth than just clicking some different switches. Great video!
loved these more concrete tests! I think an objective way to measure smooth and scratchiness is by placing a shotgun mic at a fixed distance from a switch with the keycap on while pressing (only in the mid section and don't bottom out) the swtich repeatedly. You can then compare the db readings in post. It's not the most objective way but I believe it is better than just going on ear and feel alone. Love your videos and keep up the good work!
@@Keybored no prob! Also one note for the pitch/tone test would be that you held the reader in your hand. I think the test would benifit from placing it on a stand since vibration and movement of the hand is sure to change the pitch of the reading (probably every so slightly). (:
This brought something to my mind. The community has been lacking a lube comparison for a long time, I'd love to see you do one as krytox seems a bit overpriced per gram. I think its important to question things and nobody seems to question the effectiveness of krytox for the price. I've been using nyogel with great results. Its about a third of the cost. Needless to say there are countless varieties of lube.
Krytox in the ends is like a tiny tiny tiny fraction of the cost of keyboards, I literally spend more on random foam or tissue paper to clean my builds that lube
Crazy impressive work put into the stem wobble charts. I didn't think stem wobble was a big thing until I started noticing it when my hands rested. I think a video going in depth on stem wobble and what it means would be helpful for newbies. (even if some people don't worry about it)
Best switch review I've seen yet. Love the spectrum analysis for the sound. For so long switch reviews have been so subjective it's nice to have a better comparison. Excellent job!

I'll keep using the new methods to keep building more and more info! Hopefully at the end of all this, there is a nice collection of info as comparison!
I've tried a few switches and decided to try these based partly on your review here and others. I have to say these switches are really nice. The out of the box smoothness is undeniable. The ones I received (just about a week ago) had zero scratchiness at all, just completely smooth actuation entirely. I was skeptical the out of the factory lube job would be that good but it really is that good. I may actually be close to my endgame board with these switches being part of that equation.
Fantastic analysis - I really applaud you for trying to quantify the sound spectrum of the switches. Our hobby is steeped in qualitative, subjective observation and it is fantastic to start being in some science. I suggest you have a look at Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), as already mentioned below by LiveType.
