Fatal crash on Highway 99 in Madera

- CHP says it appears a big rig traveling northbound on Highway 99 between Ave 9 and Ave 12 in Madera hit a pedestrian who may have been outside of another big rig stopped on the side of the highway.

The sad consequence of impatience and poor judgement... People thinking a semi-truck can brake in a hurry. Praying for all involved...

Far from what actually happened
Truck carrying fruit sideswiped the car hauler which was off to the shoulder as the driver was working under his rig. The car hauler driver was killed. The semi following behind the fruit truck was also involved as you said they don't stop on a dime, no other cars involved

This happed at 12:15pm yesterday on 99N the golden western star truck was parked on the side of the hwy, have mechanic issues, the red freightliner was in heavy traffic. As the traffic picked back up the freightliner was cut off and braked checked causing him to pull to the right striking the western star truck. The western star driver was under the trailer when he was hit and was killed in the process. The investigation is still ongoing not all is clear just general statements.

That’s not true, I was next to the red truck he was swerving the whole time and believe or not he ran me off the road and no less then a minute later I was watching him through my mirrors he was swerving even more and ended up hitting the truck. My guess was drunk or sleep deprived

When I was taught driving a 50 passenger bus, if someone cut u off or brake checked you, it was a lot safer to hit the car in front of you rather than swerve because of the huge amount of momentum and weight.
I am surprised Truck drivers dont know that.
A video camera is always your best witness.
When I was training to drive bus we were told to try and maintain a 6 car length space on the freeway to give yourself plenty of time and room. That it's better to slow down and let others pass to maintain the safe space.

@timothykalio157 true but then you let up on the gas and make room. It's a safety measure. Our cameras on the buses let management know if we were following safety protocols to keep our buses and passengers from harm.

I cleaned up way to many of those accidents it's a shame. People need to slow down pay attention and stay off their electronic devices

My Gramps had an accident in this same area. He ran out of gas and pulled over, but that depression kept his car on the narrow shoulder. He got smacked but was cited because his rear left corner had been in traffic lane. Late '50s.
I hope he was alright, but I am sorry for the accident.

If you travel California’s Hwy 99, just south of the City of Madera, in the highway 99 center, to mark the point halfway between Mexico and Oregon, are a Palm and a Pine. That's where Granps was attempting to add enough gas to get home, when the guy came out of the fog and smacked his 1963 Comet, knocking it into the ditch, and veered away, leaving him safe as his car went right and the perp went left, leaving him standing in the fog, after midnight, with a gas can and thinking, "where'd my car go?"

Should have been upgraded to Interstate quality decades ago. The fruitcakes that run the state decided a “train to nowhere” that zig zags all over the Central Valley was a better use of public funds. Nuts.

I hate that 99 with a passion. Been driving trucks in Cali for 24 years. I can’t tell you how many accidents and deaths I’ve seen on that highway.
I was on a bus when a pickup swerved in front of us. Could have been bad but the driver did a hard stop and kept it straight. We all cheered for her when it was over.
That is why following distance is so important. You people hang off someone's bumper at 75mph and think you are a good driver. Even if you are( you are not) you are trusting the guy in front of you to make good decisions.

So very very sad. I'm a big truck driver and I am always aware and I stay off that phone because I don't want to kill myself and hurt anyone else. I couldn't live with myself if I hurt someone while being distracted.

I remember a fatality accident, like it was yesterday. It still hurts my heart. I couldn't see anything gruesome but what i did see was hard because a life was gone. I was riding with a coworker and I told him that I loved him. Just the thought of not being able to ever again tell your husband/wife/child or friend that you loved them. When I got home I held my family. Sudden deaths, you never get to say goodbye. Very sobering. So sad for the 18 yr olds family. Yes, that whimper says it all.😢

It's horrible to see the word "Fatal" in the news.. stuff like this could be avoided if the driver behind the wheel actually had a brain... people who breakcheck other cars should NEVER own or use a car.. they are the reason people lose loved ones in roads...

As an OTR truck driver I see exactly what happened. Please be patient with each other. We all deserve to get where we are going safe and alive. So sorry for the families loss. May God be with them. I realize the current administration seeks to divide us. Please do not let that happen. My husband and I see far too many of these accidents that can be prevented. We are stronger together but we need to all be alive to get our country back. It is rough out there. I get it. Be aware. Stay patient. Good judgement will keep you safe. Be well fellow patriots. ❤️🤍💙
