  • Just in time for Halloween 2020 you can learn how to make a Viking beard perfect for a variety of costumes! In the 14th episode of Nā Pāka ma ka Hale (Parks at Home) brought to you by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, Tim from Paki Community Park will show you how to perfect this do it yourself accessory.
    Supplies Needed:
o 1 skein of yarn (1 roll) - any color you want
o 1 ribbon - a color closest to your yarn color but not necessary
    o Scissors
o Ruler, yardstick or guessing skills
    Parent Note:
o Be aware of any safety issues in the use of scissors. Be safe.
o Let kids choose color(s) and length
o Steps are given but there is more than one way to get this done.
o Have then participate (as much as possible - there are a lot of knots). They can and will make mistakes and it is ok. Let them be as creative as they want.
    Directions:
    1. Set up your area before you start. Get all your supplies ready. Read through instructions or watch video prior to start of project. Just so that you have a better idea of setup and how you plan on going forward.
    2. Determine the length of your beard. Beard shown earlier was roughly 1yd. Find the length by folding a sample string in half - that will be your length.
    3. Use your ruler, yardstick or guess to cut yarn pieces (60pcs). Each piece does not have to be exactly the same size.
    4. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon:
    a. One at 3 feet (depending on the size your head)
    b. One at 7 in. This will be tied behind your head btw.
    5. Tape ribbon to table, flat surface or hang from 2 points.
    6. Pay attention to this: Fold each piece of yarn string in half, pinch the bended side to make a loop, place loop on top off taped ribbon, with the other hand grab the two end pieces and push through the loop. The ribbon should be in the middle. Pull ends down and close up the knot around the ribbon. * Note: you will want to make the knots the very same way each time for uniformity - BUT in the craft world however the kids want to do it IS OK. Let them have fun with it.
    7. Tie about 50 pcs. Scrunch together and test on your face periodically. Knots should reach ear to ear.
    8. Count about 8-10 knots from the end, make a space, tie one end of the ribbon to this space. Repeat on the other side. Don’t make it too taut/tight. This piece will fit under your lip.
    9. Tie additional yarn in the same way on this piece of ribbon. Cover all of the ribbon.
    10. Double check and tighten all knots.
    How to wear:
    1. The short piece of yarn is on the inside (on your face).
    2. The longer ribbon with yarn is worn above your top lip
    3. The shorter ribbon pull down below your bottom lip.
    4. Wrap ribbon around head - above your ears and tie.
    5. Beard can be trimmed evenly, crooked, rounded and to any length
    6. Beard can be braided also.
