A lot of what happened was up to luck, and in that respect the difficulty is partially irrelevant. Death on Radiant isn’t nearly as common as on higher difficulties, but the right series of dice rolls will still kill. Once she learns the importance of group healing and stress healing, it will be much better for her and that stuff will be far less likely. Not impossible, but less likely.

You'll have a hard time at the start but you're not playing on Stygian, so don't let failure discourage you. There's no time limit or failure state, even if you lose some heroes along the way you will have more. It's okay to fuck up while you're learning, in fact if you're not going to touch the wiki, failure is exactly how you learn in this game.
Make sure to take the opportunity to try out new party combinations and skills, experiment until you're comfortable, then lean on what you've found works to get through the hard parts, until you can start experimenting a bit more.

Here's some things to keep in mind if you come back. No spoilers just stuff u didn't notice or had questions about. You can read chapters you're interested in and leave the others unread this is just so you know the tools given to you by the game.
    1. Torchlight: You can view your torches brightness at the top by hovering over it. This will show you the negative and positive effects of the current level of brightness. You can also use a torch by clicking while you're hovering over it each torch you use increases the torches brightness by 25 and the max is 100. You can also snuff out your torch by holding down shift when you click though I don't recommend it until you know what you're doing because the negative effects are tough to manage.
    2. Curios: The interactable things on missions if "curios" doesn't ring a bell. You read the tutorial on them but keep in mind that as it said you can use items on curios for a better outcome. when you interact with a curio you have the option to just interact with it which is the yellow hand symbol or leave it be the red x or use an item which is the slot in the middle of the two where you can drag the item to. Each curio has a specific item or sometimes two that will produce a result for example you can either unlock a locked cupboard with a skeleton key or smash it open with a shovel. Some curios have none that work aswell and it's up to you to test what items work where. If you use an item that doesn't work with the curio it will be lost and an x will be marked under the item that it doesn't do anything with the specific curio. If it works a marker will appear under the item in the future indicating the type of result the item has with the curio. It's all trial and error and sometimes it's even better to interact with the curio and not use an item but most of the time you can get much more loot and positive effects by using correct items.
    3. Characters: You probably noticed your characters gaining xp when you won an adventure. Each character has a level from 0 to 6 which increases as they participate in adventures with harder and longer missions giving more xp. This level determines the characters stats and lets them use higher tiers of equipment at the blacksmith and higher levels of skills at the guild. The guild also lets you unlock more skills past the 4 they start with which can even be swapped around during quests outside of combat if u so choose. Characters also have their own quirks. Some quirkier then others up to 5 positive and 5 negative. You saw this on your bounty hunter where he's not allowed in the brothel which is a red negative one. These quirks can be removed (both positive and negative) or locked down which means they can't be replaced at the treatment ward. Camping skills which you noticed at one point are used during camping in longer missions where you are given firewood that you can use in cleared rooms which I'll let you learn about more when you get to it. Heroes start with 4 random camping skills and can unlock more at the survivalist who you will unlock when u start doing quests that involve camping.
    4. Using items in combat: Just something to note about using all the items you can bring on your quests. These are hinted towards on their descriptions but good to know what they do so you know when to use them. Bandages and antivenom stop bleeding and blight respectively. Medical herbs remove all debuffs. Laudanum removes horror a stress DOT applied by certain enemies. And holy water increases your bleed, blight, debuff and disease resistance by 33% for 3 turns. Remember to check what your heroes are suffering from to know when to use items on them by hovering over the orange debuff symbol above their healthbar and red bleed symbol and green blight there aswell.
    5. Positioning: I'm not sure if you figured it out since you didn't say it out loud but the yellow dots on hero skills indicate where they have to be in your party and red dots what positions they can hit in the enemy party. Skills sometimes have the red dots connected by a line meaning it hits all the shown positions like grape shot on the gun boy which hits all three front positions.
    6. Party setup: Bring a healer. Preferably also one with stress healing like the crusader or a jester preferably who is the best at it. Otherwise test around and have fun with coming up with your own combos of characters. Anything can work if you try hard enough.
If you made it this far congrats! Here's a cookie for being such an avid learner :)

Then i saw someone streaming the game with chat and learning the basic stuff i didnt know for 10 hours of play. The game was then waaay less stressful and way more fun, even got 3 of my starters to the end-end.
It went from "i dont feel good playing this" to "this is one of my favorite games", but only because a streamer chat was way better at teaching the mechanics than the actual game.

just in case, you should know that the more you stun an enemy the more resistant they get to that hence the bandit "buffing" himself in the beginning. it also only lasts one turn of that enemy thus skipping it like in uno. you can leave one enemy alive to make use of combat only healing abilities but the longer you go the more reinforcements show up.
Both of these were added to stop players from abusing these strategies.
Going backwards in a hallway will always stress your characters faster than regular movement so unless you miss clicked on the map dont go backwards.

Hoo boy, rough start, lot of mistakes...
But, you will learn... In time...
    Pieces of advice:
DoT´s: They stack with themselves, blighting someone who´s blighted increases the damage, same with bleed.
AOE´s: Most AOE skills aren´t worth it since they have lower acc and damage, so you´ll end up spreading the damage and giving the enemies extra turns to hurt you (DoT AOE´s are an exception)
Aggression is key: Especially early on raw damage tends to outweigh the benefits of buffs/debuffs, this changes a bit later on, but for now you want to kill things as fast as possible instead of bothering with de-/buffs, a dead enemy can´t do shit, a debuffed one can.
Priorities: In general the backline tends to be both squishier and more dangerous, taking them out early can take a LOT of pressure off the fight.
And last but not least, Shovels: Shovels are needed to clear obstacles in hallways. When you thought you were "looting" those piles of rubble what you actually did was tell your guys: "Aight folks, clear that shit by hand. Huh? Shovels? You don´t need these, just go." which resulted in them taking a LOT of unneeded damage and stress.

I wish the game didn't have Dismas always start with Grapeshot. Everyone starts using it exclaiming "it's SO GOOD" only to keep using it despite it never being good, perishing and then complaining "game's unfair"
Also "stop attacking him!" Why - he's MARKED. What does one think MARKED means? Is it perhaps the "attack THAT ONE marker"?

    • @gamerbear84

Considering she kept marking enemies that none of the party could even reach instead of just attacking, I don't think she had any idea what the mechanic does at that point.

I absolutely love the atmosphere and how the game actually makes you feel the hopelessness and fear.

Just a small observation if she ever feel like playing the game again:
Positioning is more important than damage, healing or anything else. Any character that can mess up the enemy's position is an OP characters.
It took me 20 hours to figure out that the Occultist is best boi because of his push and pull skills. But then again i am an idiot.
