Epson XP 440 Won't Print Without Color Ink And My Recommendation

- I became extremely frustrated on Saturday June the 12th when for two hours and half I couldn't get my Epson XP 440 to print. I still had a full cartridge of black ink. The only ink that ran out magically was the CYAN ( and I said magically because I never really printed in colors so I wonder how it ran dry). So I tried a couple of ways to get around it, that's what I'm going to address in the video. I'm also going to give you my final recommendation on this printer.
This XP 4100 used up the ink so fast but I only print documents needing only Black ink. These people want to force me to buy color ink even when I don't need it. I will never trust Epson again even with their more expensive printers because if they set us up in one way, they are not to be trusted. Thank you for your video and insight.
I was so frustrated that I ended up purchasing a new printer 3 days later. Call the company and see if they can compensate you , that’s a terrible thing they have done and it is unfair and unethical

Just bought the black ink to just print in Black n White... Won't let me because the color blue is empty... I hate when companies try to screw u to spend more money, makes a good product horrible. Will avoid Epson in the future
If I were you id buy a dedicated black and white printer just for that function. That way even if it’s an Epsom it wouldn’t screw you with this bullshit until you were low with your black ink
They could fix this with a upgraded firmware .. we should all definitely complain
I totally agree, I'm also a victim of this SCAM, I need to buy 3 colors, but my Black is 100% Full.... this is a disgrace, I'll sell this shit.
Wowww, You surprised me, and Thank you for your nice Educated advice. Today my printer run out of Blue ink. Because of that it stopped me from printing normal, with black ink. I have new 5 yellow inks that, I don't know when I will use them or they may expire before I use them. I was Googling, to get some help and run into your Video. That is it. Your clear demonstration is enough for me to go and and buy more inks that I don't want. I don't k Know which Government Agency, I should report this. Good information bro! I got the Epson XP 4105 and it's doing the same thing. We need to start a lawsuit against Epson. Other a couple of test prints that you have to do when you set up the printer, I only printed three pages using color and my color tanks are showing empty. Also, I started with one ream of papers, and I still have half the package, and this is my second time replacing the black cartridge! The sad thing is I only print black, and the printer won't allow me to even though my black cartridge is brand new! Epson is Ripping Us Off!
They are Terrible , I ended up purchasing an Hp and haven’t had any problems at all but epson certainly needs to compensate people for this

Too funny. I was trying to print an ebay label when my printer stopped printing even after I replaced the black ink. I never used the ink, but every time I checked it, the levels kept dropping. It's a scam. Thank you for this video.

Same. So frustrating. I'm on an out island in the Bahamas, which in itself is very nice, but no access to CYAN...Weird that everyone has run out of the same colour first

Got the same problem. Bought some refillable cartridges with ARC chip and substitute ink. Fill it myself and never pay $ for Epson again. Not even for the black ink!! You ask for it Epson. It's not about the money, it's about not being robbed. It's unethical!!

I totally agree with you! I've had this printer for about 4 years and yes, it's very easy to install and use but, having to buy color ink when I only print in B & W is a rip off. Will buy another printer. Sigh...
My Epson WF 2850 is the same way. Also when I unboxed it I was disappointed that it only came with starter tanks of color,with instructions to replace them immediately .They sell you a decent prenter at a reasonable price and then steal you blind on the ink.They know that most people use mostly black and take advantage of that.The word is getting around and they will pay with a big loss in business.
Totally agree! I've had this printer for quite a few years and was previously able to print color or b&w separately. Then the printer started barking at me that the firmware needed updating or it wouldn't print. So I updated it. Then it didn't like my refurbished ink cartridges, which prior to updating, worked just fine. So I went and bought Epson cartridges. Now its at the point that even though I've updated all firmware on printer, software on my computer and have fresh print cartridges, it won't print a damn thing! I can't wait to Office Space this piece of crap and never buy an Epson money suck printer again! Thanks for the video. I was wondering where I was going wrong with this thing.
Same problem on a XP 5100. 😩Just bought it last year. Ridiculous requirement.😡The only Epson I'll ever buy again is "Epson Salt". I'm gonna buy another brand.
same thing i bought an HP and have been satisfied with it. it's a shame that Epson did that with the XP 440, i actually really enjoyed that printer
This just happened to me. I was going to print out some tax papers for my tax preparer and oh guess what? It shows I'm out of Cyan ink. Ridiculous! All my other colors are fine and so is my black ink. Something very wrong going on here.

I'm so frustrated! I'll NEVER EVER buy an Epson printer. I have an Epson XP-4100 and I can't get it to print using only the black ink. It's forcing me to replace the color ink cartridges but I don't need to print in color. And the color cartridges run out very fast. I rarely print in color! Very angry!!!!! 😡😡😡😡
same problem with Cyan, this is daylight robbery, and they push the forced purchase to the extent of indenting the cartridges, you can't put another for example black cartridge (easier to buy per unit) into the Cyan compartment, for it is carved to fit only Cyan....never buying EPSON ever again

I had the same problem last week. Couldn't figure out what the problem was. I have the same printer. Ended up buying more ink
I have the xp-4105 same problem. I saw a video where the person explained that Epson said that they mix colored inks to make the black ink richer👀 that's why the colored inks are running out. Then the machine is inoperable without the color inks. Frustrating!!!!

I'm in the exact same situation. Printing an eBay label to ship out an item as I always do with this printer using black only each time. Somehow, my black is full, and all the other colors that I never use are almost empty. 😮

We bought an epson and I wish I would've watched this before I did! We have tried everything to print an invoice in black! Ended up buying another color cartridge even though we hardly ever print in color!!! It's a shame because it's a good printer otherwise!
Just had to cancel a promising job interview because my Epson refuses to print in greyscale, because cyan is out. Beyond angry, about to smash the printer into pieces.
My Epson Workforce 845 has been a glorified paperweight for ages. At one point I was somehow able to trick it into thinking the ink was okay (pretty sure at least two colors had dried solid) but it's not having any of that now. The boxes of ink run $80+... better off getting a b&w toner-based printer and I've been dragging my heels because reviews for those are also pretty depressing.
Epson Wf-7840... same issue here. It will not print in black/white without the yellow cartridge. I am not surprised because over the course of owning this piece of junk I have been forced to uninstall and reinstall several times in order for it to begin working again. I just emailed a link to this page to their customer support, and I am now ordering a different brand of printer.

I have an Epson XP 4105. I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. It even says when color ink runs out you can still print Black. NOT!!! I've tried everything. It will NOT print without color ink cartridges.
I found out that you can temporarily print in black if it’s from the computers printer driver, so if you are printing wireless you need to hook the printer up to the pc. This message appeared on my Epson xp-4205

I’m writing a letter to complain I sell on eBay I print shipping labels a lot and the color ink runs low constantly when I don’t print in color! And I can’t print black without color it’s NONSENSE! Now I have to wait days to receive my useless color cartridges!!!
Same here, just happened to me now. Full black color, missing yellow, I can't print 3 ebay labels and my car broke so I'm stuck, I have black ink with a stupid printer that can't print gray scale, and no car to go and buy asap to ship today... ebay business can be scary if you don't ship asap
I have also tried to apply all the tips found with Google search. You are correct because I cannot get any of the tips/instructions to print just black ink either. I have a model EC-4040 and it's the same as yours. Sounds like a total scam by Epson!
Epson sucks. I've had an Epson WF-2820 1 month. I didn't print a single color anything. I saw my black ink is going low. I bought an xl black cartridge. I had important documents to print. Suddenly I cannot print anything, with a new full black cartrige, because the C is "low". Why would any of the colors go low when they weren't used at all?! I'm throwing this thing out. I'm thinking to make a video of it. Just smash it. It's almost new, but it is the crapiest printer I've ever had in my life. If your printer doesn't have black and white mode. Throw it out. The headache of thinking I could print a black and white document when I'm in a crunch, Epson has really cost me a lot of money.
I have an Epson WF-2850 that I bought for half-price a few years ago. I only need black ink and its crap that I had to pay $22 for three cartridges that I shouldn't even need. I bought the ink from Epson's website on July 14 and they still haven't shipped it despite mentioning shipping within one business day. I have shipping labels that I need to print and I only ordered online because I don't drive. The ink costs around half of what I spent on the damn printer.
XP-340 Have same problem. Is there a way to put water in the color cartridges? Anyone have success with that?

terrible, total fraud! I have used Epson printers for years and now I will throw this scam in the trash and never buy an Epson printer again! I feel cheated. Then, I needed to print documents urgently due to deadlines and paid 20 euros for black ink, but that was not enough because Epson asks you to spend 80 euros (for all colors) even though you only need black ink.
Yup! Going back to my HP.

This is such crap. Now it appears their latest firmware won't let you use non-Epson cartridges, which I bought all the colors months ago to have for backup and now they are useles...

Yeah it's bad business for sure. You could go around it when the printer first came out but no more.

Horrible! The printer was low on Black, I bought the Black,installed it and the Blue read low, so I had to go back to the store and buy all 3 colors, it will not print out until you have to buy and replace all 4! Unbelievable, back to Cannon-printers..that’s it..done with Epson, they trick you..of course..beware!!!
First black ink then cyan now yellow ink
And I have an entire bag full of empty cartridges they should offer customers discounts on cartridges if you recycle the empties !!

We can text till our fingers turn blue. Epson is wrong. They continue to get rich when we are trying to get rich as well apparently using a printer is work related in lots of ways. It’s been years nothing has been done but go buy a better printer NOT epson. Move on and get your money without Epson making you lose.

This printer is useless. I've only kept mine for its scanning capabilities, otherwise I would have junked it. It will not print at all. I've tried everything. It won't even print using just black. What a waste of money and time.
