Sugar Ray did the greatest thing I've ever personally seen at a rock concert. I saw Sugar Ray perform in 1998 at the local AZ music festival "That Damn Show." I went to see Bink-182 but was there for the whole thing including bands I thought were lame like Sugar Ray. The band performing before Sugar Ray was Tool and I was stoked to see Tool. Shortly after starting their first song, someone threw something onto the stage. Maynard Keenan stopped and angrily said, "If anyone else throws something, we're walking off the stage." Tool started performing again and immediately was bombarded with numerous pieces of garbage from the crowd. Tool didn't even finish their first song before walking off the stage to a loud chorus of Boos.
Shortly thereafter, when Sugar Ray took the stage and began their first song, Mark McGrath yelled into the microphone, "We're Sugar Ray and the more $#!% you throw at us, the better we play!" The crowd went nuts and the air became think with trash, shoes, water bottles, and everything you can imagine being hurled at the band. At one point, Mark narrowly dodged a water bottle and yelled, "YEAH! You almost got me! Great shot!" Within 5 minutes people ran out of trash and they played a great set to a thoroughly pumped up crowd. So regardless of what anyone thinks of Sugar Ray, they did the most "punk rock" thing I've ever seen in a live show.
Edit: The band was Cake not Tool. My apologies to Tool and Maynard Keegan for my bad memory. Cake walked off after not finishing their first song.

I bought Floored because of Fly and then got obsessed with that album for every other song on it and really never understood how they were so covertly heavy. I was at that exact time getting into metal and punk bands, so that album really threw me for a loop. I appreciate this video. Gonna go listen to Floored now.

I see why you two would be friends! You both have authenticity deep in your bones. And a genuine love for music! This video granted me a new perspective on Mark McGrath.
I think I always got good vibes from him and apparently 'loved' him as an 11 yr old girl in Massachusetts of 1998. I remember, I was doing summer arts and crafts at Star Island, and I was given a white sheet as a canvas, and I drew a silver glitter glue heart around a magazine cut-out of Mark McGrath's face hahaha, and the sheet had like orange and red finger paint on it?! I have a printed photo of it somewhere. The 90s were the best!

I remember being in the Rat Trap and Cathouse in Glasgow, bouncing around to Mean Machine. I loved that tune and, purely out of nostalgia - or pseudo-nostalgia rather than admit I still love it, and Lemonade & Brownies. We see to travel to Glasgow once a month like a long haired Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, go into HMV, randomly buy an album, go sit in Nice ‘n’ Sleazy’s before going out to usually the Rat Trap. I bought Lemonade & Brownies on a whim, so asked the DJ if he’d anything by them and that’s when he played Mean Machine
    Good timesA

Thank you for showing me that sugar Ray was not just a blip in the radar in the early 2000s and actually have more to give. Mark sounds like a really chill, down to earth person and honest. Which is not something to see everyday especially in the world of celebrity / rock stars. Much respect and thank you sugar Ray for the earbuds you've given me over the years that gets stuck in my head for days on end!

I love listening to him telling stories of his youth. Though I will say, I think he and Sugar Ray overall are more talented than he gives credit 😂. Also probably one of the people with the most broad music taste. As someone else said, definitely getting an invite to the barbecue.

Thank you for defending Sugar Ray, Finn. I don't know how they managed to make drop c agressive hard rock and relaxed summer jam songs on the same albums and make it all sound so good and catchy. They always had the look, carisma and talent to be more than another 90's rock band. So glad Mark is your friend now

In 2000 I worked at the Mall of America and in November Sugar Ray was playing the Sam Goody "arena". My coworker was a HUGE fan and basically disappeared for the whole show, leaving me to man the store alone through all the screaming. It was a nightmare. That's basically the only memory I have of Sugar Ray. Never liked them, never hated them. They're basically a shrug for me.

They were ahead of the curve by realizing that everyone’s fixation of “authenticity vs selling out” was petty and miopic. They dabbled in a lot of genres, and the early albums were fun due to the eclectic vibe.
When the hits came on Floored, 14:59, and Sugar Ray, the vibe was already immaculate.
I went to their concerts with my parents, as a teenager, and we all had fun. I’ll take my kids now to see them play the next time they’re around.
When you think about it - what actually makes a band matter - I think they understood something that a lot of their contemporaries lacked.
