  • This video demonstrates how I replaced a Genie Garage Door Opener with a more powerful one. I used a Genie 750 StealthDrive Belt Drive Garage Door Opener with Back Up Battery.
    The process is very similar to Installing a Garage Door Opener, but I reused some of the hardware.

    Hey man, thanks for this video. Getting ready to put one of these in my garage and it's good to be able to visualize everything before I start on it. Kudos on the empty garage, too. Half my project is going to be moving mountain bikes, outboard motors and countless fishing rods out of the way. Thanks, again!

      @@TheHappyLife-h7b Got the thing assembled and mounted only to discover the power unit is bad, right out of the box. I checked it with my voltmeter and have a 120v going in, but zero output. I sent a message to Genie support and they sent a robo-response for me to wait 1-2 business days for an answer. I already know the answer, but I guess I'll have to jump through their hoops to get another power unit shipped. Nonetheless, your video was very helpful. Thanks again!

    Recommend learning how to unwind the springs. Then, w/the proper rods you can wind the springs the correct number of turns and then check out how balanced your door now is. further fine-tuning might give the perfect balance and allow your opener hardware to work as little as possible. Of course, one must be completely sober standing on a ladder, winding one's springs approx. 32 quarter-turns and then tightening the bolts to preserve the adjustments.

    The garage door opener is not supposed to lift much weight. The springs are supposed to balance the door and if you don't get the door balanced you are going to be replacing that new garage door opener ticker than you think.

    • @brianpiersol9412
      @brianpiersol9412 Год назад

      now your talking! the springs should be of the correct torque on the door when closed so that it takes a minimal "lift" effort to start the door moving up! If you added additional weight by installing door insulation, the springs should have maybe been changed out to handle the additional weight as to not burden the motor. Let the springs do the work, not the motor.

    Well, this garage door comes with all the bell and whistles of a modern day device (wifi, app, Alexa, 3D installation app). It is as easy as it gets when it comes to installing a garage door opener if you're a handy man but I would hire a professional if you're not a handy man. The problem with this Genie is that the manual and even installation app lack the details and did not emphasis important points before installation. A nice big yellow bold note "BEFORE YOU INSTALL" Points would be nice.
    Here comes the con:
    1. You must install EVERYTHING including the ground sensor for the opener to work or it WILL NOT work. I tried to test the unit before mounting on the ceiling and it would not work.
    2. You MUST program the close and open distance before using the wall mount controller. After the programing, do a complete open and close run for the motor to test the tension of your garage door.
    3. The Plastic UP/DOWN/PROGRAM button are horrible and cheap. My PROGRAM button would not click due to the a defect plastic button. I had to remove the shell where the real buttons are and program from there. It's easier to do it with the shell off.
    It took me and another person 2 days (6 hours day) to install this due to the lack of details in the manual and the lack of important emphasis points in the manual.

    Couple tips for anyone reading, coming from a professional garage door / opener installer.
    First thing; don’t buy a genie, they’re really not worth it and I’d recommend purchasing a chamberlain, lift master, craftsmen.
    When installing the header bracket make sure to lift it a few inches over the springs roughly 3-4 inches, the rail should be higher next to the springs and sag downwards in the middle, rail should be 1-3 inches up from the top panel when the door is fully opened, when installing the arm that pulls the door, make sure it’s a slight slanted L.

    Well there is some things that could be changed with this install whoever originally installed it in the first place mounted the garage door opener way too high up and has a garage door installer genie garage door opener‘s especially today’s especially on heavy garage doors the trolley mechanism all plastic one of my friends were saying oh Genie is the best product ever and I was like I bet you it’s going to break he texted me two weeks later saying you’re right the trolley broke so don’t waste your money on a product and don’t waste on a garage door opener that’s not broken because of the springs if you know what you’re doing with torsion springs then fix it if not you hire someone about the exact same cost as a garage door opener and as a future reference I recommend installing a chamberlain belt drive or a lift master belt drive those openers are very strong long lasting if you install it correctly put detailing your work and if the garage doors balance if the garage door is not balanced then you just put money into something that it’s just going to break again

    • @TheHappyLife-h7b

      The red and green lights are correct. One sends and the other is the receiver. Your down travel may be too long causing the door to hit the floor too hard and simulate a collision with an object. Or maybe some how your line of sight between the green and red becomes interrupted when the door closes.I hope that helps and thanks for watching.

    If you installed a new garage door and now your garage door motor/opener is having hard time going up there is nothing wrong with your motor/opener probably your door hits the floor real hard when is going down when is not connected to the rail of the opener. You did not installed the door properly. 1/2 hp even 1/3 hp motor should open the garage door easily. Probably you need to wind up the torsion spring or springs if you installed two springs.(Constructive opinion Greetings)

      I just installed two of the 7155 models yesterday. I’m here fighting the remote programming, but noticed your question. The kits come standard for a 7 foot (height) door, so I had to buy the 8 foot extension kit. It was about $40 at Home Depot. The kit included a longer section of rail where the idler puller is, a longer belt and a longer disconnect rope to release the door from the carrier. I had no idea I would need to buy the extension kit, so measure the height of your door before buying. They sell extension kits on Amazon, but I wanted to install this weekend. My local stores were out of stock, so I assume it’s not a common item for most stores. I had to drive about an hour away to a Home Depot to find mine. The openers are up and above my expectations, like way above, on how quiet they are. I had original to the house, AllStar brand 1/2 HP chain driven openers. They were really loud and sounded like the doors were falling apart when opening. I could release the door and manually open them, and they were quiet, smooth and easy to raise by hand. So my springs are setup properly, just 24 years on an opener is a lot of work. I did try lubing the chains, no help with noise. The 7155 is great, so far. The Aladdin app works perfect. Just wished I could figure out the HomeLink buttons in our cars and the 3 button remotes. I may have issue with using the Sylvania LEB bulbs I installed. I’m reading they cause RF interference with the signal. So, for $40, you can replace the belt. When I looked up the belts online at Genie, it’s $75 for a replacement belt. This may not be available for 7 foot doors.

      @@donrcollins231 After reading the documents, the motor and belt are lifetime warranty. However, my concern is how long does it take to get a replacement belt? One day of not able to open the garage door is a long time.
      Yes, I have to agree the belt drive is extremely quiet. All I can hear is the noise from the rollers.
      About the HomeLink in your car... First, you need to clear the old program on HomeLink by press and hold the #1 and #3 buttons at the same time. When you see the green light blinking then you can let go the buttons. Next, the best thing is to take one of the remote in the car and drive away far enough so the remote can't open the door. There, press the button on HomeLink you want to program, you will see the light blinking. Then press the button on the remote and hold for 2 seconds then let go. Repeat a few times until the blinking light goes away. You are only half way done. Back to the garage, press and hold the program button on the opener until the light turns purple. Now press the button on HomeLink a few times. The purple light on the opener will turn green and you're ready to go.

    STOP BUYING GENIE. I understand the price tag is nice and all but it’s like that for a reason. Cause it’s cheap in the manufacturing process as well. I work for a garage door company. When it comes to your motor. SPEND THE EXTRA DOLLARS. You want it to last. Look into chamberlain or lift masters. Some exact things just much better made

      I highly advise not to mess with that type of spring if you are not a professional. The above comment comes from someone who is a novice that usually gets their face wiped of with a wrench because they said “it’s cheaper’. Also the same guy that keeps doctors and garage door companies in business🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

    • @colemanneedles3620
      @colemanneedles3620 Год назад

      @@Yosemite25 The tension in the spring has been set to counterbalance the garage door. If you add weight (via insulation panels), you need to add tension to the torsion spring. The extra horsepower opener will help, but the door should be able to be lifted with one finger (when disconnected). It takes minor competence and set of winding bars to re-tension, but your biggest thing to look out for is a ticket from captain safety AKA Yosemite25

  • @stevenbeebe35

    The springs should be lifting the garage door. If your garage door opener is " lifting " the door, do NOT REPLACE the garage door opener. The Springs have to be adjusted from a Garage Door company. DO NOT work on your garage door springs, hire someone. Nice video though.
