Then search for the type of store that your friend meant and see which ones are open at what times. Hardly anything closes at 6pm anywhere in SF. Your friend was either joking or what they mean by "store" is not what Americans call a store. I'm assuming that you're not American. It's true that in the US clothing stores and retail in general tends to close by 8-9 pm, but that is considered normal pretty much everywhere in the country. FYI if you just say "where is the closest store" to an American they probably direct you to the closest grocery store.
