Building Pacific Rim's Stylized Helmets
Special Effects supervisor Shane Mahan of Legacy Effects shares the many components that went into the helmets they created for Guillermo Del Toro's PACIFIC RIM. Diving into every possible detail, Legacy Effects walked the line between aesthetics and functionality to create the iconic and sleek looking helmets for each pilot in the film.

All this could have easily been CG. They coulda gone Iron Man and made only the busts and CG the rest of the suits, but nope - They went above and beyond to make each prop and costume very real and very practical wherever possible and they damn well deserve awards for their dedication and skill.
Uprising also does the same thing with the suits and conn pod. In fact, Uprising has plenty of practical effects

The first iron man also use a lot of practical effect, they actually build the suits.. but 20 movies after and the suit become more and more flexible, they just had to cg it

These people are as much part of the driving force behind actual science then academic scientist. This is not simply amazing, it is truly inspirational.
The gold and silver fluid on the helmets made me think so much about the Halo videogame series 0:56!

Daft Punk will be piloting the French Jaeger in the sequel lol. "Get Lucky" is one of the Fastest, Strongest, Hardest, and thus Better, Jaegers. :-D

So yeah what was the gold fluid for? I think most fans are expecting that it helped create a neural bond through the liquid between the human and the robot. Love the effect great seeing this stuff on the movie.
just by this, you can see how much effort and care and passion went into the first one compared to the shitty kids rim

Difference is he knows how he wants to tell the story and he actually thinks about every single aspect of it.
There are great directors, but Guillermo del Toro is just on another Level.
from the wiki: "Relay Gel resides within the helmet of the Jaeger pilot and relays the impulses of the pilots to one another, allowing them to move in synchronicity."
Considering that Cherno Alpha was the Mark 1 Jaeger, it makes sense for their suits/helmet to be less conservative and have that retro/steampunk look.

All of the practical effects done for this film were so beautiful- you guys really took it up a notch this time. Please tell me there will be an expanded "making of" segment when this film comes to DVD.

These guys at Legacy and their awesome designs and practical work, are worth at least ten to twenty mediocre CGI shops.

Absolutely bad ass. I think the helmets did have one element that made them a bit weak, though... they shook around sometimes when the actors turned their heads. All the coolest suit features looks cheap for that one second where the helmet is bouncing around. Really awesome otherwise, though.

Someone once told me, a good way to tell if something was well made was to look at how they made the instruction manual. If they work at making that well made, that will reflect on the product. Thats what the original was quality, not the cheap Chinese knockoff which was uprising.

There's a lot of stuff in the movie that are justified by nothing. The insect-like spine ? The gold fluid ? And so on. It just looks cool, and that's all. Don't try to understand, I think you're wasting your time. :)
