What a treat! I have always loved Oistrakh for his magnificent full-bodied tone. In person he never disappointed. I heard him first in New York City, some years after this was recorded. He was absolutely in his prime. Concert-goers back then had eagerly awaited him. Only his awesome reputation preceded him. No recordings had been released from the then Soviet Union. Then the Iron Curtain was relaxed somewhat and he could play in America. Back in the sixties was when I heard him. The Kreisler candenza featured here is a particular delight. The entire performance highlights the violin and allows it to sound as lush and expressive as only Oistrakh could have managed. Thanks so much for posting. A true rarity.
I prefer the Kreisler version to the original. But some purists criticised me for that and said, you should play the original. But the problem is, like in the violin concert, that his late compositions show his psychiatric problems. He stays too much in his mental prison, only slow musical advance and devellopement.I think, Kreisler did a good job, making this piece more playable and popular.
