What people miss about this program is the operational requirement that it is supposed to fit. It is for rapid mobility for Airborne/ Light Infantry units to move from the DZ/ LZ to the objective in a Air Defense Heavy environment. It is not made for combat patrols or for a large force on force operation. It is a taxi service, so the vehicles need to be cheap, light, and fast.
I remember that the Rangers used Land Rivers around the 90s / 2000 not sure , so this would be something like the british vehicle , cheap , light and with spare parts in the civilian market.
The problem with that is there is no such think as what it's built for. You have to assume enemy forces will be present and they'll have the least common denominator of AKs, LMGs and RPGs.
It's very clear to see the dust being kicked up is entering the cab, I sincerely hope that they put substantial mud guards on the final product, I wouldn't want to be in it over dusty terrain, especially the rear seats area. If its a prototype then I am sure that will be addressed, otherwise there are going to be some very miserable people using colourful language.
I’m guessing nobody will want to just hang out at the truck in truly winter conditions since it has no appearance of weather shelter Might as well start planning for 8 man squads since you’re never going to just leave a vehicle unattended or even 6 man squads if the truck is also your medium/heavy gun platform. I guess you could get strap hangers for those positions but you still don’t have the seating for your squad at that point
Mostly a "parts bin" vehicle - which is fine. Keeps costs down so you can make available large numbers of them. And it does what it's supposed to do. A very rudimentary, single-purpose mission: to transport an infantry squad. However, once the squad is dismounted, what do you do w/the vehicle?
You need to bring your manufacturing back to the US and make us happy and do a better job for the American people before we think about giving you any defense contracts GM... Americans are watching
As an outdoorsman, that looks fun.....if the weather is right. As an old school Infantryman, it looks like nothing short of a death trap. I'd rather walk.
how does it stop incoming rounds? well Bob, once you get shot at you stop driving, turn off the ignition, exit the vehicle, and then use your buddies to flip the vehicle over and fire from behind. Good luck.
This is assuming there is open terrain, or roads. And to carry a battalion, it will require about 120 vehicles, 50 mechanics, parts supply, fuel supply. And will make troops more vulnerable to enemy fire because they are concentrated.
Now the enemy only needs a few claymore mines on the sides of buildings and tree to take out the Soldiers in the vehicles. I can see this being used for fast attack to cover a lot of real estate quickly after insertion, but not for regular patrol work where there is an expectation of military forces coming and going from a FOB.
I think they’re aiming for a vehicle to replace the Humvees as Light vehicles to cover a lot of real estate with better fuel milage and compatibility with commercial grade spare parts, probably like the old Jeeps. Patrol duties are now mostly delegated to the MRAPs like the JLTV who got more survivability against IEDs and mines but bulkier.
that's all it's supposed to be used for. Move quickly from the DZ to get to the last tactical mile where they go in on foot. it's not supposed to be an assault vehicle or a patrol vehicle.
Seating layout looks a bit crap, doesn't look like it has much stowage for POL, water, ammo, batteries rations, maintenance and recvoery equipment, defense stores, etc etc. Yes the raised. roof section above the rear seats might be used for lighter stuff, e.g. the cam net, but I suspect any heavy stores, POL, water up there would mess with the center of gravity. Sure a second class ride is better than a first class march, but as shown it doesn't look like there's been much thought about the requirements for living and operating in the field. Basically it looks like it can carry the 9 grunts, their personel equipment and that's it - and they don't event have racks for their personel weapons by the look of it. I suspect once it gets to the field it won't have enough growth in it to accomodate real battlefield needs and may end up becomng a 6 man troop carrier to allow for all the stores and equipment actually required in the field. Lucky it is a fairly modular looking build.
Basically its a high tech Jeep........ Hopefully they can simplify the transmission and put durability back into the vehicle with simple maintenance and shorter parts lists to keep the logistics side in check. Yeah I work at a chevy dealer...parts guy
I saw the Flyer Defense ISV on the sling load pad at BAF like a month and a half ago. It's already here in theater and probably was delivered to some ODA or other SOF element. So I'm guessing GM didn't get the contract?
Hi Shaun, your looking good. If you want to go "off road" then go to a gravel plant and climb the three quarter minus pile, up and down. That is the natural angle of repose. If you cannot do that, then, you cannot stay with the soldiers. You can provide transport to the "end of the road" . A ledge, a swamp with cat tails, a snow bank, fallen timber, tall beach grass, willows, sage brush, mesquite, deep snow, mud or blow sand will reject you. Iguana Ps I like the comment "open to entertaining"
Government contracts for emergency vehicles come without the emissions systems. That’s the case for police, fire, ambulance and military vehicles. That said, they could probably decrease harmful emissions and increase range as well as engine life with an HHO system...but they won’t do it.
Imagine if they made a variant of this that replaces the rear 4 seats with a full 360 degree swivel turret that could mount a minigun or perhaps someday a railgun lol
Yes, that too, but I was pondering something also with more 'full-capacity, cost-effective force-multiplication' special capabilities for the warfighter to offser and rebalance various firepower imbalances, or disadvantages shall we say .
Tell ya what. Put on the gear, with full combat load, and ride around in the bitch for a few days, then re-do the seats. Do have any friggin clue how much shit we have to wear? What about the space taken up by radio mounts, BFT, CROWS, water cans, fuel cans, extra batteries for the radios, extra ammo, and chow inside the crew compartment?
There seems to be something missing. Hmmm, what could it be? Oh yeah, armor. Because apparently nothing has been learned since the early 90s about driving unarmored vehicles in possible combat (or definite combat) situations.
Yeah they gonna dodge that 200 round stream of PKM rounds with the vehicles AGILITY and SPEED, they could put virtually weightless Dyneema panels all over it, I just don't get it.
@@Veldtian1 They are desperate trying to believe the last 25 years didn't happen. If pressed they would probably spout the unless SOCOM mantra of "Armor the person, not the vehicle". Which didn't help in Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan or anywhere else people actually shoot back.
Not really .This is meant for ofensive manuevers for special force units. At the same time it also gives you the advantage easy shooting while moving but that is for pro's
South African Combat History has shown that that concrpt is doomed to fail... It needs armour and it has ZERO mine and IED protection... Otherwise.. Maybe a workable idea!... For LRRP behind enemy lines... Yes, maybe!
This is just a taxi for airborne infantry. Rather than risk overflying a potentially air defense filled area, drop the paratroopers further away, load them onto this, and let them drive, rather than walk, to the objective
It seems these vehicles are being manufactured for whatever environment we are going to invade/operate in. My guess is the Middle East, these vehicles seemed designed for that purpose. That being said, where's the protective armor!?!
What he should have said after the shareholder comment was. With that accent I can tell you’re not from around here. So that was a silly question. We make war stuff.
Literally everything this is meant to do can be done by run of the mill Toyotas and Nissans for literally 1/10 of the cost of this thing. This is nothing but a political gift from Congress to GM. Keep in mind these things cost 330k a unit. This piece of shit is why you can't have affordable healthcare, bridges that aren't collapsing, veterans who aren't left living on the streets or for that matter gear that troops actually need.

Flat bottom so you are F$&@ed if you hit any type of IED, small gun mounts so maybe a 240 at best, small engine for 9 troops and all their gear, limited storage for ammo, food, water, and weapon system. Maybe an SF vehicle but not for a regular squad that is 11-13 people!
I wonder if the speaker would have been as impressed if he’d shown up on a rainy day in February. Imagine sitting in a wet seat in 40 degree weather. I volunteered to sit back there, it’s not awful. And we went through some pretty good mud puddles, we actually barely got any on us. Not too bad
I know things change. But I will always miss that M-151 Jeep. It's a classic that nothing else can compare.
