Gordon Brown has said he ''understands and respects'' the position of Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg in stating he wants to speak to Conservative leader David Cameron about a possible coalition.
The Tories have won most votes in the general election, but not an overall majority.
Speaking to reporters for the first time about the future of a hung parliament, the prime minister said he was ''willing to see any of the party leaders''.

His role in helping the UK recover from the 2008 financial crisis is one that he will never get much credit for. The coalition proved that it was no easy task. Between 2009 Q3 (first quarter of growth post-recession) and 2010 Q2 (end of Brown's premiership) GDP grew by about 2% (adjusted for inflation). In the first 8 (full) quarters of the coalition, GDP grew by 0.34% across the whole period, a period marked by further recession. GDP isn't everything of course, but perhaps an indication that Brown didn't get everything wrong.
Like you say, not a premiership without its faults, but he probably is regarded a bit too negatively.

@@MrAndroidData Assuming Gordon Brown had won 2010, I seriously doubt he'd have swung 2015. The idea of Britain giving 23 years to Labour is just so unprecedented that I just can't see it without something crazy happening. With that in mind, and the fact that Cameron was bending over to appease the Euroskeptics from the second he became party leader, I think it's still very possible we would have had a tory government and a Brexit if Brown had been elected. It would have been interesting to see Brown's premiership as even his rivals described him as highly intelligent and connected with his values, but I don't think any individual could have prevented the course Britain is on. At the end of it, the country didn't want Corbyn, that was clear since the Salisbury poisonings (at least approval ratings show that). The polls now tend to show that the country wouldn't mind Starmer too much, but the Labour brand is toxic thanks to Corbyn.

@Bellalodicci9 i cant vote in the U.K. cause I'm Canadian, I'm just letting you know that Canadians are paying for voting for the Conservatives, our Liberals were caught up in scandals, but the Cons came in and were even worse. Labour in the U.K., is bad, but the Tories are even worse.
we thought we got "change" when Canadians voted for Stephen Harper's Cons (I voted third party for the New Democrats, similar to your LibDems) but all we got was a Canadian George Bush

Gordon Brown... You were an intellectual and political heavyweight; you were an astute chancellor, guiding us through a global recession and most of all you were sincere. In these days of style over substance, it's a shame that people can't see past the way you look or come across in the media - here's hoping the next ...Labour leader seals a deal with the Lib Dems to keep out the Tory menace.

Really, the Tories can't claim to have the will of the people behind them either when 36% of voters and 23% of those eligable to vote, voted for them.
Even if they had achieved majority of seats, it would have been on a minority of support, so I see little difference between Brown or Cameron seeking to form a government.

I would just say to Clegg: remember NuLab have form on this. They promised electoral reform before, to your predecessor Paddy Ashdown. They produced the Jenkins Report, which Blair promptly kicked into the long grass. It was never heard of again. If you think you will receive any better treatment from Brown and his friends you are just deceiving yourself. Remember: "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." Brown is finished. Let Cameron have a go - how can he do worse than NuLab?

@shani6969 lib dems aren't sellouts, they had to form a coalition with either the cons or labour if they wanted to help create a stable gov't.
The Tories agreed to implement some Lib Dem policies such as replacing Trident to save money and other stuff, and the Tories agreed to moderate some of their intended policies. The Tories were willing to compromise.
Labour however, according to reports, were not willing to compromise and were simply handing the Lib Dems the Labour manifesto.

Obama is a centre right conservative same with Stephen harper, but Harper more left of Obama. Now I don't agree with alot of what Stephen harper has done with social policy but his economic policy is solid and wouldn't bankrupt us like the liberals and NDP would.
