  • This episode of the podcast gives an in-depth look into the new mini touring bass pedalboard for my show in Morocco with the Brecker Brothers next week. It's small but mighty, and ended up being something completely different from what I imagined it would be.
    The signal chain includes the MXR Vintage Bass Octave, MXR Bass Envelope Filter, Line6 HX Stomp and MXR Bass Preamp.

    You've got to try the Walrus Audio Kangra filter/fuzz. Highly underrated and has got the warmest envelope filter. Switch the envelope off and turn the filter all the way counter clockwise with the fuzz on (vintage no mid boost) and you've got an epic sub synth. Took it off the board only to put it back on.

    Love the Podcast Janek! Regarding your Temple pedalboards comment. I have 2 different Temple pedalboards and love them! But I am NOT a fan of their screw on pedal mounting system. Your comment wasn't specific but I assume you ruled it out because of the mounting system. Firstly I found the adhesive from the mount to the pedal is almost permanent so after almost ruining 1 pedal I immediately abandoned that system and I just use dual lock on top of the board. That also allows me to be a little more accurate of my pedal placement vs the mounts. The boards are lightweight and I'm a big fan of their patch bays for i/o and power, makes life so easy. On the other hand the Mono Tick is such a high quality convenient little bag, as you've done here it almost pays to build the board around how you are going to carry/transport it.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Месяц назад +1

      Totally right about why I chose not to use the Temple board. It's the mounting system that I'm not crazy about. Again, it's not that it doesn't work, it's a personal preference, and I feel I can be way more creative with the positioning and design with using dual lock.
      I can also see why Temple's add-ons like the I/O module are very attractive for people, it's a great idea.

    I believe that the HX Stomp’s outputs are actually TRS balanced outs, so you should be able to run a TRS-XLR adapter and not have noise, bypassing the need for a DI. I prefer a DI to an adapter cable every day of the week, but when trying to scale things down that’s always an option and then I just keep a couple spare adapters in my gig bag.

    Did you arrange the octave and envelope pedals so their switches were close to the Stomp for a reason? Like ease of getting power to them? Or keeping the switches close together? Having feet like flippers myself, I'd have been minded to arrange the octave and envelope switches so they were at the edge of the board so it'd be less likely to catch the Stomp's switches inadvertently. Would be interested to know the design decision on that front

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Месяц назад +1

      The layout was all about the location of the power inputs plus the ease of using one small patch cable between the octave and the filter. It keeps the cabling neat.

    Great vid! I love small boards like this. Quick question about your Mattisson, do you think the 32” scale sacrifices anything in the lower positions? I love the idea of a more ergonomic instrument, and im curious if the 32” works well for all registers or if it’s just better for solo playing. You’re an inspiration man!

    Don't know if you already thought of this, but if you want a preamp you could start the signal from the hxstomp with the preamp you like and then use the send/returns for the octave and envelope, i use that exact setup and for me it works amazingly. The only problem i find is that i would like to use an analog compressor since i don't like the stomp ones, do you use in the stomp that works well for you?

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Месяц назад

      There are major issues with the AD/DA conversion in the send/return on the HX Stomp. It destroys the natural sound of the bass when you have the block bypassed. I don't know why more bass players aren't experiencing this when they use the feature...

    34:52 just flip the placement of the first 2 pedals so the octave is on top with the input going up away from you instead. It would mean a slightly longer cable run from the filter to the stomp, but it's not too bad

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Месяц назад +1

      I considered that, but I need to access the octave way more than the filter so it's a little more convenient to on the front. I'll use a right-angle instrument cable into the octave to avoid catching it with my foot.

    Why did you not place the foot switch of the envelope and octave to the outside of the board? Would that not make foot switching access easier? (As in octave on top, filter on the bottom of the board.) Or did that make the cable connectivity a mess?

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Месяц назад +1

      But everyone on RUclips is using DI’s with their HX Stomps 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Месяц назад +1

      Because I still need to rely on a DI pedal to go to the front of house, and I'd much rather have control over that, especially with the added bonus of EQ that the MXR Bass Preamp gives me.
      I could use the EQ in the Stomp, but that means using an EQ block on every preset. I like to have EQ separate from the multi fx, just like the octave and the filter. The Stomp is amazing for certain things, but in some areas it's still in its infancy.
