That’s probably largely due to the space available. The US is so much less dense than a lot of places that we’re kinda able to build out instead of having to build up. Plus high school sports are huge which is a big part of it too
The American School built by the embassy in the suburbs of the city I live in is absolutely massive. Takes approximately 10 times more space than a regular school.
Another thing is that American highschools are built with the expectation of future population expansion. There is a greater expectation of more students in areas where new high schools are built. Another thing is that its not that often that new high schools are put in, so they usually only go to large, growing, and semi-urban areas.
The school I went to is on top of a big hill on the edge of a small town in the countryside, it has multiple campus buildings, 2 fields and a gynamsium, with capacity for about 500-ish pupils. While down the road further into the same town there is a Grammar school that is half the size with no fields for around the same amount of pupils. Saying that, all schools I know aren't anything like these American ones in size. There is another in the town I live that is for 1000 pupils but is still nothing in comparison to what is seen over in America. I think part of it is that America simply has A LOT more land to build on than most other countries.
While I will say that American highschools are bigger I feel like this one way overshoots the actual facilities? Like. You might have one baseball field, one hybrid track/football field and a very tiny greenhouse.
Streams sound like a great time. Also, I would recommend adjusting the road markings as the end of your 1u roads. I don’t think every alley or parking road would have crosswalks. Those would be restricted to the main road crossings within a city.
how about "clippers" for the first HS football team. a clipper is a kind of merchant ship renown for its speed during the age of sail and with the lighthouse right there it could hint to the community's history. Also dont forget, schools need flags
I actually came to suggest this very name, along with a story - before the lighthouse was built, well over a hundred years ago, a passing ship was waved away from the rocky shore by two lantern-wielding silhouettes at the last possible moment. The storm was so fierce that the figures could barely be seen through the rain. The captain later returned to inquire as to the identities of those responsible for saving his vessel and crew, but the two never came forward. The small town was completely oblivious. Two nameless Lightkeepers lost to time, with only the safe passage of that vessel and its crew to attest to their existence.
Lightkeepers is nice since the Lighthouse is near the Football stadium. My highschool (i don't live in USA) had a Latin like "slogan" so maybe instead of Lightkeepers it could be the Latin form of Lightkeepers, Levius, or the latin form of Light Keepers, Lucis Custos

It would be really nice if you considered adding some agricultural aspects to some of these highschools. Greenhouses are fairly common, my small town highschool has two. We also have a goat pasture and barn. These facilities support our agriculture classes.
The highschool campus turned out to be really nice. Also glad to see the lighthouse park finally get some attention! However, I'm still not sure if having such a bridge over the tracks makes sense. The point of trenching the railway mainly would be to improve the connectivity between the disconnected parts of the city. Having 1 bridge connection doesn't really change that much. And it would make more sense to have 3-4 straight bridges over the trench, without the need to elevate it over other roads.
Indeed. I can think of a few cities where something like the trenched railway has been done - essentially "cut and cover" tunneling, but only partially covered. But in all those cases, it's connecting to a station with underground platforms, with the trenches low enough that roads can just cross at-level over the top. A shallow trench connecting to a surface station... that's unusual, and it's not hard to see why, given the hoops Phil jumps through to make it work...

27:00 this stuff, where you are accepting the odd inbetween spaces and making them come to life, is the absolute best. oftentimes it seems there's an effort to make everything perfect and that kills some of the real life of it, for me. thank you for taking this approach!
"height of realism, moving a whole block." I just seen a video on how they are moving a 100 year old theater in NY, its not sideways but they are lifting it like 30 feet and building a new foundation and entry under it. I feel like moving blocks might be a thing, considering how the Ocean is coming up on us, really might be able to.
@@edwardmiessner6502 They want to modernize the entry but have it reflect the old one in its layout. While preserving the old entry. Its a nice compromise, cuz we should be, across the nation, replacing anything older then 60 years. Cuz there are still tons of lead pipes, and just regular damage. Even some electric lines are nearly 100 years old just like that theater.
I would love to watch you adjusting the buildings. On my current city I have blobbed about 90% of my buildings. it looks and feels so much better when every building position and look is though through. It is slow business, but so much more satisfying.
A suggestion for the first high school: because it is so close to the monumental lighthouse, I'd call it Foghorn High and make the mascot "Hornets", becaise horn is already in the school name
I would love to see a stream going block by block with detailing. I’d also love to see you start putting in some of the diverse communities that you had planned for van buren so there could be a China-town, Little Italy, and more!
For the high school near the lighthouse I think it should be called lighthouse park high school and the mascot would be the Seahawks, this is because of the proximity to the ocean
@20:20, the problem with the Old Van Beuren portion of the overpass: Arrange at Line doesn't just change the curve of the road; it also redistributes all nodes to be evenly spaced along the selected segments. Thus, an 8+2 pair will be made into a 5+5 pair.
One of my favourite Clearwater episode to date. On point Phil. No hesitation, you were just doing what had to be done this episode to accomplish your vision, and I LOVE IT. Live streams of making fixes around the city would be a perfect vibe and I think Clearwater will be much improved because of it! Keep it up!
Probably late to the party but if you do see this I think going block by block is exactly what would be good for a stream! It's not something major that the people who don't watch them would miss out on and at the same time there is so much to do! It would also allow you to get feedback from fans and get them more involved with the little things giving them a sense of ownership even in the fine details of simple city blocks! P.S. By "graffiti" I hope you mean mural. ;D
That five points intersection is screaming for a beautiful roundabout. I could see it being a focal point as you drive into the city with a statue or fountain in it's center. Nashville has a pretty nice roundabout now with public art at its center and was a lovely entrance to the city (as a first timer). Also I imagine being the seat for the county, we'd start to see some newer buildings come in in the future. Van Buren could use a few glass towers as it progresses!
I was in a completely horrible mood and beyond sad tonight... but halfway through this video I'm laughing and enjoying myself. Thank you, Phil. We love you, man.
What about Quayside High for the first school because it's right by the coast? Then the team could be the Quayside Keepers after the lighthouse, gives it a link and some nice alliteration! Amazing episode as always
Hey Phil! I’ve always loved watching your builds ever since you started Verde Beach. I just had a few pointers. What about the Auditorium or Band Hall. I feel like Washington High School would dedicate more space and resources to the fine arts since it will be a major part of the city. In the more rural areas I would also designate land or integrate areas into existing schools for agricultural education like greenhouses, small livestock pens/barns, workshops for teaching skilled trades like welding and carpentry, and maybe even a small forestry area. I grew up in a rural area in East Texas and FFA was a key part of my education growing up, and though my school was only a 3A the school district still provided all of these amenities. That being said I am not sure what kind of assets are available for this but I do think this will be a much better use of taxpayer dollars and would realistically make the citizens of Clearwater county much happier with the school system.
Apparently, Martin Van Buren’s political enemies called him “the fox” for his “sly political maneuvers”. The Red Fox is a fox native to the upper peninsula, so maybe Van Buren High’s mascot could be the “Red Foxes”
You’re really showing your biases for sports here, Phil! Lol. 5 baseball diamonds and one soccer field. I really enjoyed this episode. I’d be a fan of live streams for detailing. I think you’d enjoy getting into the granular details too. I think the next high school needs to be named “Mulligan Academy” in honor of your famous catchphrase
I would love to watch a stream of you just going around and adjusting blocks. There’s something so satisfying about a well laid out city block. Also, as someone who lives near Toronto, I love seeing schools that look like the ones I went to!
Awesome episode. I do that that with the large HS there would be significantly more parking or even a large parking garage to accommodate all of the students, teachers, and staff. The second thing I could see is multiple club houses and equipment buildings for the teams to meet before practice or games and to store the equipment to take care of the fields.
Some of my favorite parks to visit are very “bare-bones” as you say. I think you are right and the community around the lighthouse would love it so much! Sometimes it is nice to walk around in nature and to see sights.
I second the call for a fence at the edge of Foghorn Bluff. Seems likely some families with small kids would like to picnic there for the view, but might hesitate to let them run and play. I'm also concerned about the accessibility of the lighthouse. Wheelchairs and strollers would have some difficulty approaching the base of the lighthouse without going on the grass.
I think the alleyways being 1u roads makes the area too intersection dense. Maybe aesthetically and functionally it would work better if you used regular concrete paths? Would give it a bit of a SoCal kinda vibe, though.
The asset you used for that high school is Earl Haig Secondary school and it is the largest high school in Toronto. It is also the high school I attended years ago. Small world.
in rugby, the footy posts aren't at the end of the field but are where the try zone starts. The field you were looking at has it wrong. Here in Australia, most schools will have a soccer post and a footy post in 1, basically posts above a soccer goal and a detachable net
The blank backsides of those gateway towers would look great with some massive murals welcoming people to that side of town. Buffalo NY has a ton of these types of murals to fill in the blank spots created by urban renewal
i think soccer field dimensions can vary, but usually when they share with football, the goals go right under the field goals (sometimes they are build into each other). that way you don't have to move anything, you just paint two sets of lines in different colors. At least for the practice fields. maybe they are willing to move things around in the stadium more
Love the high schools you built. The larger one with all the athletic facilities would most likely have more buildings on its campus--auditorium, gymnasium, magnet programs, etc. A school with a population of more than 2000 would be massive and have a lot of support facilities scattered throughout its campus. I teach in the third largest school in Florida, we service over 4100 students and have a separate 9th-grade center just to handle the transition. Lighthouse - Foghorn Bluff Clippers or Sound would be great to tie into the area Near Van Buren - Van Buren High, Home of The Capitals, Senators, Renegades, Eagles, Patriots, etc. Largest one - Clearwater Central High School, Home of the Tide
4:48 The "array index is out of bounds" exception occurs with arrays, which are blocks of memory containing multiple individual values. The exception occurs when, say, the array is 5 elements long, but you index it with a number beyond that, like 11. The same thing can happen with negative numbers since array indices always start at 0.
@@ammoran2011 It's usually not a concern. Arrays are used all the time in software, they're like a box with a certain number of slots. If you ask for a box with 10 slots, and each slot is labelled 0 to 9, you can't place an item in slot 15 because only slots 0 to 9 exist. That's what the program is making an "exception" for: trying to put something in a slot that the box doesn't have. The code catches the error happening, and instead of continuing to execute as normal, it makes and exception, and does somethong different to deal with the issue. You would either need to ask for a new box that had the correct number of slots, or do something else with the item you wanted to put in the slot. This is a common error, and is easily dealt with as the program runs. It's not likely to cause a crash, but could come with other buggy symptoms depending on how it's dealt with.
And another: "First Nation" isn't an individual place. It's the label given to what I _think_ Americans call "Indian reserves". So, "Otter Lake is a real lake in the Canadian First Nation of Wapekeka." And your pronunciation was fine👌.
I'm watching both this and the Verde Beach series and I'm really enjoying them both. I love the depths you to go, to create a sense of realism and the lore you create for these areas. 😁 Amazing content.
You should liven up the streets in the rowhouse districts. Place some thick street trees and some detailing like benches and bustops. Its what adds to the charm on brownstone apartments in NY. it also helps break the pattern and make it more lively
you added the connecting pedestrian paths to the side where the school is but forgot them on the other side of the train tracks. lovely episode! i would also absolutely love to watch that livestream.
A neat way to squeeze just a few more students into the large campus would be to add another one of the smaller capacity highschool in and call it the vo-tech building. I went to a vo-tech program and it is a great way for young people to get a baseline understanding of things like nursing, drafting, auto shop, protective services, wood/metal working, or culinary professions. (To just name a few)
One thing missing for the bridge block is that a large flat white building side like that would likely have some old marketing or a modern mural painted on.
Phil, id love to see a own video about you detailing the city. Not a stream. Its those little details i love! Like a little back alley where there is a little elusive park, etc. Those things matter the most cause you often forget or dont even see them enough in large cities. Also you shouldnt be afraid of red trees in your cities :)
I would totally watch you go block by block on a stream! I was actually hoping you would do it before you even mentioned it. I love watching the nitty gritty detailing
There should be many more connections across the railway corridor that seperates Van Buren. For a pedestrian those few connections would feel like a great barrier to easily get to the other side of the railway tracks. You could make parts of the railway corridor be put in tunnels to make plenty of simple connections. Other than that, thanks for another great episode. The high school campus looks lovely!
I'm eating Hello Fresh right now, I make tortellini and then make a sauce out of one of their boxes, today is Tandoori BBQ. It's incredible. Just throw the Hello Fresh ingredients in with milk, butter, cheese, salt, pepper, garlic and herbs. Delicious.
take a look at Cité-des-Jeunes Campus. The main high school has around 2800 students on 4 levels, there used to be another highschool with 500 students, another highschool with just 1 level with 400 students, an adult education school, I think they recently added another school to that campus. they have multiple massive gymnasiums (each one can be partitioned) an arena, football field, waterfront access, a library, multiple cafeterias and an administrative building .Much may have changed since I saw it, but I still remember it being one of the biggest high school campuses. also most of the buildings are connected by underground tunnels. Because winter. Also some of the tunnels doubled as locker areas
Washington High reminds me a lot about the huge public school I went to and the only thing I kept thinking about is how small that parking lot is. You left 136 spots for 2000 students. Even if only seniors could part there, that's still a LOT of carpooling.
How about Malcolm Carter High? Malcolm Carter is a retired teacher who dedicated his life to the education of young people. A chemistry (and as a former student, his chemistry classes were a lot of fun! He prided himself on having left a mark on the ceiling of every class room he taught in) and physics teacher, he spent 45 years in education, teaching people who went on to become community leaders, politicians, and so far, two Nobel Prize laureates. He founded a new school in a small country town which and as principal, took this school in a back water town to the #4 ranked school in the state, out ranking prestigious private schools along the way. He believed in engaging each child at their level, promoting their strengths, and guidance with a gentle hand and open ear. He believed well rounded students created the best platform to become successful in life. He encouraged participation in all aspects of school life, academic, sporting, and the arts. Refusing to let one suffer in the promotion of the other. Malcolm believed in small class sizes so teachers could spend more time focusing on individuals. Every student under his care, and every teacher under his leadership all praise his work, and his achievements
I'd really like a stream of going through and fixing up some of the blocks across the county! I think it would also be a nice idea to do a stream at nighttime to make sure the city looks good at night too :) maybe take a little time to add some street lights on the highways at important intersections, parking lots, pedestrian paths and whatnot

I saw a photo of that; I thought they were moving it several story's up to make room for an office building project!
Definitely, I was against plopping until I started to do it. Makes the city look so much better!
A suggestion for the first high school: because it is so close to the monumental lighthouse, I'd call it Foghorn High and make the mascot "Hornets", becaise horn is already in the school name
28:35 I noticed cars entering the cross bridge from the parking lots, a breach of the laws of physics!
I would love to see a stream going block by block with detailing. I’d also love to see you start putting in some of the diverse communities that you had planned for van buren so there could be a China-town, Little Italy, and more!
You could add hills to the empty parts of the elementary school yard so that in the winter kids can slide down the hill
A big high school for a big city. Super excited to see how this turns out.
For the high school near the lighthouse I think it should be called lighthouse park high school and the mascot would be the Seahawks, this is because of the proximity to the ocean
The Goats would be a good name IMO because the park next to is is called Foghorn park and since foghorns are you know, horns, it makes sense.
Honestly if we're going for Foghorn Park as a reference, Foghorn Leghorn would make more sense as a mascot 😂 a giant rooster
Really enjoyed the build, loads of fun. Can't wait to catch a stream of neighborhood detailing.
Very well thought out!!
"have you ever seen so much unhappiness?" Yes. Every time I log on Twitter
Hey Phill, have you checked out the mixed use developments that Biffa reviewed recently? I think some of them would fit very well in CC!
Completely agree. It was a good video!
Block by block detailing is my jam too. Definitely along for the ride!
Absolutely down for a detailing stream or two. :)
Apparently, Martin Van Buren’s political enemies called him “the fox” for his “sly political maneuvers”. The Red Fox is a fox native to the upper peninsula, so maybe Van Buren High’s mascot could be the “Red Foxes”
Alternatively, another nickname for Van Buren was “little magician” so maybe they could be the “magicians”
That café under the bridge surely has to be called The Troll Café 😂
Disingenuously dedicated to internet trolls everywhere lol
I think the county is going to need a new airport soon. If you were in Van Buren you would have to go way on the other side of the county.
Adjust ALL the blocks! Every corner must be perfect. Love all the work you put in to making this region the best build in Cities I've ever seen.
Phil, I love the manual adjusting each block! But, I'd love more it in regular episodes!!
I think the alleyways being 1u roads makes the area too intersection dense. Maybe aesthetically and functionally it would work better if you used regular concrete paths? Would give it a bit of a SoCal kinda vibe, though.
I'd love to see you on a stream going block by block. The additional aesthetic value is so worth it
The asset you used for that high school is Earl Haig Secondary school and it is the largest high school in Toronto. It is also the high school I attended years ago. Small world.
I really enjoy you taking the time to make the really minute adjustments. I think it really improves the quality of the build. I would love a stream!
in rugby, the footy posts aren't at the end of the field but are where the try zone starts. The field you were looking at has it wrong. Here in Australia, most schools will have a soccer post and a footy post in 1, basically posts above a soccer goal and a detachable net
As far as Van Buren high school, he (Martin) was known as “the red fox of Kinderhook” so maybe the Red Foxes?
Red Foxes would be my suggestion as well. Perfect fit for a mascot with a nice simple historical nod
This is my favorite series on RUclips. Thanks for continuing to provide such entertaining city building content! 😎
Thank you!!
You should call the first high school: Rosa Parks Honorary Public High School
Or
Martin Van Buren Public High School
Lighthouse - Foghorn Bluff Clippers or Sound would be great to tie into the area
Near Van Buren - Van Buren High, Home of The Capitals, Senators, Renegades, Eagles, Patriots, etc.
Sooo… can you translate that to layman’s terms or something concrete? I get that error on my CS game and have been trying to figure it out.
And another:
"First Nation" isn't an individual place. It's the label given to what I _think_ Americans call "Indian reserves".
So, "Otter Lake is a real lake in the Canadian First Nation of Wapekeka." And your pronunciation was fine👌.
I've been to otter Lake before it's a beautiful place
I'm watching both this and the Verde Beach series and I'm really enjoying them both. I love the depths you to go, to create a sense of realism and the lore you create for these areas. 😁 Amazing content.
I wish I had your level of creativity and attention to detail, Phil. The things you design in this game are unreal.
You should liven up the streets in the rowhouse districts. Place some thick street trees and some detailing like benches and bustops. Its what adds to the charm on brownstone apartments in NY. it also helps break the pattern and make it more lively
Great episide, CPP! And I would definitely be down for a big re-design and detailing stream 👍
you added the connecting pedestrian paths to the side where the school is but forgot them on the other side of the train tracks. lovely episode! i would also absolutely love to watch that livestream.
I would love to see more in depth perfectioning, let perfect be the enemy of good!
Absolutely love you adjusting these blocks, if its not too late night for +3 GMT, I would definitely check out live stream
I love it when you remodel the blocks, it inspires me
Phil, id love to see a own video about you detailing the city.
Definitely down to watch as you redesign your city blocks. Watching you detail is one of my favorite parts of your streams! Go to the ZONE!
Take a look at what the city of Cleveland, OH does for the blank walls. Sports team poster covering the entire wall would be great.
I can’t believe CPP eats. I thought I was listening to American infrastructure that somehow became sentient.
I am more than happy to see you adjust the city block by block.
Washington High reminds me a lot about the huge public school I went to and the only thing I kept thinking about is how small that parking lot is. You left 136 spots for 2000 students. Even if only seniors could part there, that's still a LOT of carpooling.
The city block adjustment happening on stream is probably a good idea and a *way* sped up timelapse could even make it to a video
The van buren bridge over a rail corridor reminds me of downtown Birmingham (AL), complete with the dreaded five points district.
Yesss please stream those block by block improvements I can't get enough of Clearwater county
