  • Even after a tragic accident left her paralyzed from the waist down, Olympic swimmer Amy Van Dyken-Rouen stays as strong and positive as ever. Being confined to a wheelchair, however, makes most of her house inaccessible to her, with stovetops, sinks, and cabinets just out of reach. No detail is too small in this rescue, as George and the team make several seemingly minor but impactful alterations to Amy’s kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and more to help reinforce a sense of independence to this inspiring woman, who is so much more than her handicap.

      I always say- it's not my disability, or the fact it causes me to need a wheelchair, that's the problem. Its lack of access and lack of help from society that limits me. My wheelchair gives me freedom and a better quality of life.

    • @jennyhughes4474
      @jennyhughes4474 4 года назад +3

      @@livewellwitheds6885 Well said - I know what you mean about lack of accessibility! I've got a brain injury (an 'invisible' disability') and my/our needs are not catered-for at all.
      I know those with 'only' mobility difficulties aren't accommodated at all properly either (& obviously should be - to everything) but I think because it's easier for people to see physical mobility access requirements (though they get it SO wrong with too-steep ramps etc. = SO stupid) people are now more aware of this type of disability than things I have now (since my brain injury) such as difficulties with my memory, planning, paper-work, extreme exhaustion & overload.
      Brain injury isn't talked or known about much at all whereas alzheimers, autism & learning disability are = I/we feel excluded & 'forgotten' by the 'experts' who create standards & (occasionally) enforce them.
      These same highly-paid 'experts' also advise the DWP on the questions/proofs required to be eligible for disability benefits and Councils (?) for who can get a Blue Badge for parking - and still (as far as I know) all these descriptors of who is disabled discriminate against those of us whose disabilities aren't as visible - including those with PTSD, depression, anxiety and others who suffer from 'mental ill-health.'
      I know it's all better than it was decades ago but I there is still such a long way to go, and in the meantime so many people suffer discrimination & hardship caused by bad/wrong government policies (as you know only too well) - this must change FAST - they can't use the excuse that they don't know any more!
      I wonder if you've got access to a really light & manoeuvrable (is that how you spell it?!) electric wheelchair and lots of make-life-easier tech & aid solutions that help you be independent? Not many do I think: only if you're rich or have won a legal case against somebody & got a big payout, I think - not available from the state to all?
      All the best to you.

    The renovations in this were very well done. As Amy said, she didnt want her house to look like the house with the handicapped person. And on the outside it doesn't. But on the inside she gained so much independence and doesnt have to constantly rely on her husband for things most people would consider everyday and mundane.
    I wish they showed the pool lift reveal though. I have no doubt before her accident she was still a very regular swimmer, and it was still an important part of her life. They showed her out back for a split second, but no reveal.

      Devanshi! I don't want to give you too big a head, but just came across this video and actually scrolled down to see if you had commented before I watched! Not creepy (I promise) but just excited to see another GTTR video posted. LOL. I think we might BOTH might be obsessed! Hope you're well! Sean

    Anyone who couldn’t or wouldn’t “tear up” at even the smallest part of this story simply doesn’t have a heart & isn’t human..... This was an incredible gesture for an incredible & inspirational woman & I tried...... But couldn’t hold back the tears 😰😥😭

    Absolutely beautiful retrofit! Unfortunately the rest of the 99.99% of people in this situation will suffer horribly because they are not celebrities on a TV show...
