    Just fixed mine in about 15 mins, £6.30 worth of connectors from Halfords, kitchen blowtorch and cable from old toaster. I managed to cut earthing strip on the cluster with tin snippers. The hardest bit for me is re-fitting the cluster..but it's secure enough. Thanks for saving me a lot of time and ££s.

    And thank you James Tailer for listing where and type or wire needed in the comments.
    Though I’m wondering if I could of just soldered a single wire to the light cluster and not bothered with crimps, but hey ho it works.

    Just want to say thanks for the video. My Peugeot 307 was in the same exact condition

    Thank you so much for posting this video @Stuart Vickers, as it has just saved us a lot of time and money. Having gone round to Halfords this morning to replace a couple of blown bulbs in my rear cluster, on closer inspection my partner and I discovered my earth pin, was in fact half its original length, and the root of the problem....... so making use of some earth wire, a crimp connector and our soldering iron, I now have a fully working rear light cluster.

    This would have been the third bulb holder on my pug 307 - I just followed this to fix my offside rear light cluster which kept burning the earth pin out. I'm not an overly technical girl when it comes to wiring on anything but this was easy - Highly recommend giving it a go - took me about 15 minutes but only because to get the holder to fit back into the light cluster I had to lay the spade terminals flat against the holder for them to fit back in - but other than that a massive thank you on a fix that has been driving me nuts for a year!

    rewired slightly differently. didnt have connectors so just used an old phone charger wire twisted around the earth inside the light down too the earth below the light. same wire used too rewire the boot which wouldn't open . car gone now, will never buy another french car. the Renault i had b4 the 407 was plauged with electrical issues too. tnks for the vid. hopefully u save many others money. peugeot wanted €500+ too sort it

      dubjon it’s not just French motors dude. I did exactly the same fix on a two year old Mercedes the other day. It’s modern cars that is the problem. This fix will apply to most electrical issues on any car and it will always be the earth that burns out first. It’s a simple fix because all you are doing is strengthening the signal of the earth

    Brilliant fix, just did both my rear lights as one was burnt out and the other wasn't far off. I soldered a single wire to the earth position (as shown in the video) then used a single insulated conector that can be disconnected to the earth wire on the car eliminating the heat shrink tubing. Cheers! 👍

      Hi mate, when you say you soldered a single wire to the earth position, did you wrap the wire around the part he clips and solder?

    • @MC-073
      @MC-073 7 месяцев назад

      @@ryanbrown9989 no didn't wrap it just sanded the strip with dremel tool to ensure a good connection & then soldered the wire directly to it. There's no need to cut the strip to create 2 earth points. An electrical connector at the cars earth wire allows for easy removal of the tail light assembly if you ever need to remove it from the car.

    • @chrisobrien200
      @chrisobrien200 7 лет назад +1

      Hi Stuart, the front passenger window switch (on the drivers control panel) became erratic and has finally given up altogether. Someone suggested it might be a dirty PCB, but I'm not really sure how to get to it or how to clean it?

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      Chris O'Brien it's usually dirt in the switches that gets in there from having the window open when it's raining. They are prone to failing though so expect to buy a replacement. Before you go down that route you can alway try spraying electrical contact cleaner inside the switches and operating the windows whilst you do it. It's good stuff and might sort out the problem even if it's only temporary. It's not really the sort of component you want to be taking to pieces though really and even when you replace one, the fabric on the door card never really sits the same again. Just try the contact cleaner first before you go buying new expensive switches

    Hi Stuart. I think that I have the issue on the mother in law's 307. Corrosion on the earth terminal in the plug is not as bad as the one in your video, but earth cable is discoloured. Has been hot at some stage.
    I would just like to confirm which fuse on the 307 is for rear lights before I go for the big cut on the bulb holder
    . Have checked out the 3 x 5 amp fuses. They are okay. Manual does not state which fuse is for rear lights. Video is great. Peugeot dealerships in Oz, charge like wounded bulls.

    I just did this on my neighbors 308, if you need to do it on a 308 then you'll have to do it differently, because the sequence is different on the 308 light cluster. I'll try to explain it as simply as possible.
    First you pull the cluster out of the light.
    Locate the earth prong, it's usually been burnt a bit. If your unsure which one it is, just line it up with the yellow and green earth wire on the male plug.
    Turn over the light cluster, you'll see the metal stripes coming from the other side of the female plug, Use some wire cutters and a mechanics pick to snip/remove some of the plastic cement that is around the earth prong.
    Carefully pull the earth prong to the other side with pliers while pushing out from the other side.
    Once it's through, snip it off the skinny prong back to the corner where it goes thicker. make sure it remains flat and not pointing up.
    Crimp on a Red (or matching size) female blade connector with about 20-30 cm's of wire out of it. Make sure the female blade connector is not point up. it has to remain flat with the cluster body.
    Reattach the cluster to the light, making sure the earth wire you attached to the cluster is hanging out of the hole next to the existing plug on the cluster.
    Follow the rest of process that Stuart has.
    Do this if you are comfortable, it is easy to stuff up if you are not careful.
    I was going to do a video about it but it was dark outside. I'm a auto electrician by trade, and this won't do any harm to anything. All your essentially doing is rerouting the light clusters earth wire. It will suffice until you end up replacing the entire cluster and rear light loom, which you'll have to sell some organs for from Peugeot.

    @roughharbour871 7 лет назад +1

    Probably a stupid question but what did you use to cut the earth strap?Obviously scissors won't work and the pliers I have aren't doing the job. I've had no end of bother trying to get the stuff needed to do this. None of the usual places in my area have had the connectors etc and I would've had to buy a full reel of cable to get one bit. I've walked miles to all these places as I can't use my car and I'm still no nearer getting the job done.... Post script....finally after more hassle than I really needed the job is done and my o/s rear lights are all working! Hiccups aside the job did only take abut 15 minutes - thanks Stuart. I'm feeling quite chuffed with myself....not bad for an old bird of almost 60!

    Thanks Stuart for the video best one out there. Can you tell me what size wire you used to bypass the fault and will this fix work on a 207. I am not sure which one would be the earth strap that i should cut to feed the earth wire back through the cluster any help.

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  8 лет назад

      Once you've cut the Earth on the plug, you will see all the copper strands inside the insulation sleeve. I would roughly count the strands of wire and use a patch wire of a similar strand count for your patch cable. Regarding the earth strap on the cluster… try and look at it as a maze… the earth strap to cut will trace to every single bulb holder on the cluster. If it only traces to one or two bulbs then you haven't found the earth strap.

  • @qwertypoint1958
    @qwertypoint1958 5 лет назад

    Hi can I ask why you cut the earth strip in the light cluster? Wouldn't a self tapping screw, screwed into the earth strip and a piece of wire done the same job?

    • @qwertypoint1958
      @qwertypoint1958 5 лет назад

      I can answer my own question, Yes just drilling a pilot hole through the earth strip and fastening a wire on with a self tapper screw from the back side does work. Took longer to take the light unit of the car than doing the mod

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  5 лет назад

      Kev F you can do it any way which works best for your individual situation and tools available. As long as you are reconnecting the earth directed from the battery side of the burnt out plug then you will fix your issue

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      scoot if you repair the fault in the way that I've shown in the video it is unlikely that it will need to be touched again. The repair shown is a much stronger connection than the original plug and will last a lot longer unless tampered with. The repair is actually also much safer than the original malfunctioning plug. The failure inside the plug would of been creating heat through poor connection inside the plug and increasing the risk of fire. Whereas the repair shown in the video allows no resistance and so reduces the risk of further damage

    Hi, I've tried this fix, but the offside rear indicator on my 307 is still not working (the normal lights are fine). What might I have done wrong? Also, I don't seem to be able to get the spade connectors to stay securely on the cut ends of the earth strap (though since the other lights work I don't think that's the problem with the indicator). • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  8 лет назад +1

      No you can't use tape really as the connection will be weak. You need crimp connectors which you can buy from most hardware or motor stores like the ones used in the video. If you copy what I've done in the video example you can't go wrong, but please don't go taping things or wrapping wires round terminals as they will only come loose and cause you more light faults and trouble in the long run

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  8 лет назад

      You will need a small length of two core cable like the one in the video. Strip the sleeve off to separate both cores and then carry out your repair. The wires don't need to be particularly thick but as thick as the green and yellow earth feed coming into the block connector

    Hi Stuart, I've just done the fix cutting and bypassing the strap you mentioned. It has only fixed the two small driving lights, but not the brake lights or indicator. Do you know what might be happening? I have a 307 2006.

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      I would suggest trying the bulbs first. Remember that this fault won't occur instantly. It happens over time and your bulbs will be under stress flickering all the time.
      If the bulbs are ok I can only imagine that the earth you have created isn't fully connected at both ends of the strap you cut. Remember that these connectors we used on there are insulated and it's possible to crimp the wire inside with no connection at all. I'd go through the process again and make sure both ends of the new earth are connected to either end of the earth strap you cut.
      If there is still a problem give me a shout

      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      amrit321 I'm afraid you've either done something wrong somewhere or your plug is that badly corroded that the signal is crossing over somewhere else. Was it an intermittently working indicator fault you had or something else? And are you certain you have cut the correct wire and strap?

  • @WhiteychanStarcraft
    @WhiteychanStarcraft 8 лет назад +1

    So my 308 has recently developed this issue.
    So do the two cables connected to the earthing strip connect together, then connect to the earthing wire?
    Does it also matter where along the earthing strip the cut is made?

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  8 лет назад

      As long as it's the earth strip that you've cut and its in a place where you can easily wedge the wire through the back of the cluster it shouldn't matter too much. The earth will always be the strip that leads to each individual component and then each component will have one separate live feed.
      The two wires from the cut strip should be joined together and then joined onto the earth once cut from the plug

    What guage wire did you use?

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  6 лет назад

      jezmcm it all depends on the gauge of the wire you are extending. Try and match fairly equally to the wiring that feeds your plug and work from there. As it’s end of line connections it shouldn’t matter quite so much but I would still aim to keep it similar to the wiring it’s fed from

    I did this fix and got the light cluster working again, apart from the brake light. I changed the bulb so I know this isn't the problem. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

  • @liannehanson594

    Stuart, I'm getting a 'fog light bulb faulty' message in my 207. Will this sort out the problem? I've seen on a couple of forums that replacing the earth wire usually sorts the problem.

    Hey!
    So, cars aint my thing. But the explanation you've given is excellent! : ) However, I've must have done something wrong because now when I signal left, two bulbs blink (and the indicator inside, like before, is blinking fast as f**k) ; / I have a 207, so the frame does not look the same as yours. The only thing i cant think of that's gone wrong is that I cut a wrong "strap" on the frame. I just went randomly for one ;/
    I've even tried two types of wire. Same result.
    Earthcable 75mm2 and a twin power cable 1.5 mm2 (each 75 mm2).
    So the power cable I just split and used one for each plate.
    The earthcabel from the car is 75mm2 or less.
    Maybe not fully connected? Nope, I think so, because when I pull one out purposely everything stops working.
    I see that you use a blue shrink butt. I have some problem joining two cables in on hole. Should I maybe switch to a yellow? That of course may cause it to be to big for the other side which only has one cable... hmm.
    Any suggestion on what I've might be missing?
    Im think of cutting one more strap, a thicker one, just to se if it works.
    The old cut strap I just need to combine with a cabel and two spades (I'm guessing)
    Thanks
    /
    Erik

      Erik Gunnarsson are you able to post a picture of your cluster on here for me? The quick flash is likely to be a blown bulb on your front or side indicators but I will need to see your cluster to be able to identify your earth strap

      Not sure about that. The fast blinking comes and goes. All bulbs are intact.

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад +1

      Erik Gunnarsson the fast blinking can be caused by the bad earth. Yeah I'll need to see the cluster all in one picture making the part that you've cut visible

      James Marshall you won’t need to disconnect the battery as long as the lights are switched off as the only contact with the battery will be the earth

    Can I do this on a Peugeot 306?

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      D Prince as long as you have found the earth running through the cluster and it's wired back as shown in the video, the repair should work exactly the same

  • @Taken252

    stupid question but can a garage do this easily? I don't fancy playing about with wires.

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      FRANK ESSANDOH a garage would be able to do this easy but as part of a repair they prefer to replace parts rather than repair them as their will then be more legitimate.
      But this idea is Done to save you money and avoid the garage fees. You're better getting a friend who is competent at wiring to do it for you

    would this work on my 407sw

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  8 лет назад

      Yes it would… Peugeot use a similar light cluster set up with similar plugs to the rear. I would suggest that you make sure you have tracked the earth first of all so you know it's a certain fix. The earth can be tracked by looking for the wire that feeds every light component on the cluster and then cutting in the appropriate place to be able to feed the new earth wire back through the cluster

    Used to have one with this fault. I've seen dozens with the same fault. Why it's not been recalled I have no idea. Good fix.

    • @skinleeproductions
      @skinleeproductions  7 лет назад

      Paul Leggett no worries :) I think all French cars should be recalled to have all of their wiring replaced. It's not up to the required standard.
      My partners peugeot 307 almost caught fire the other day because of a similar Earth fault in a plug like this. All of the wiring is melted away. It's all part of the resistor which regulates the fan speed for interior blowers. I've bypassed the plug and component now but it could've killed someone.

      Stuart, I should add that I replaced it with a 2011 Peugeot 308 so I may have this in the future.

    • @skinleeproductions

      Paul Leggett I'd say you most certainly will. The only thing I can suggest is that you spray all visible connector blocks with wd40 before winter each year to prevent similar troubles in future
