Where to find gold? Potholes or Bedrock pockets.

  • Another video on where you can find gold in a creek. This video focuses on "Potholes" those round pockets you find in bedrock cobbles spinning in high water flow and eroding almost perfectly circular holes down into the bedrock. This is just another place you might locate gold on a creek or river.

    Thanks. I've never found gold in a pot hole. Now I see that was because they were still active. It might be good to put your finger in the shot of the gold so we can get a better idea of the size of the gold, This old prospector says thanks again.

    Why would you not think that there's going to be any gold in that stuff you shoveled first for about 5 or 10 minutes I guess

    • @frogbear02
      @frogbear02 5 лет назад +1

      gold is much heavier than all the surrounding sediment, therefore, for the same reason panning it works, youd expect the gold to settle on the bottom. any gold in the higher layer is likely to be few and far between, and not really worth the time and effort to get (i still pan it just because im like that, but if youre trying to make a living, time is money, and that top layer is wasted time for no real pay off)

      The best way to find gold is look for the happiest prospector at the pub and beat him up in the bathroom and rob him. That or sell 'prospecting equipment' by buying it in bulk from China for $10 an item then resell it for $1,000 an item.

    Not sure what makes you think there is no gold in the top foot and a half? If the bottom fills with 6 inches of sand there may be gold maybe not... but the next flood may deposit more sand, the next flood may wash in some gold flakes... where they gonna go? ON TOP OF THE SAND ! ! ! ! there is no way you can determine at what strata the gold was deposited, it may have been deposited in the Most recent flood - putting it on TOP. I would have run the entire batch through rough sorting one six inch layer at a time and record if there was any gold and if so what layer was it in ... however ... this does not ensure that the next hole will have anything in any particular layer, it all depends on what happened UPSTREAM during any specific high water event.... if it dug out some flakes on the last flood then you just shoveled out some flakes and threw them into the creek!

    • @GoldNSlots
      @GoldNSlots 5 лет назад +1

      Gold is so heavy while there is water in there previous. It would drop to bottom and settle on or near bedrock. Reason probally he didn't check it. Imo

    I've had some luck cleaning out the old Dry Pock Holes here in the dry streams. Some of these rivers and streams only see a decent flow once in 20 years. Some schools of thought say if there is no packed gravel the hole will be fruitless. I don't agree with that.

And you never looked in the sifter to see if just maybe you had a nugget in there, there' always a chance that one could have been there. I guess we'll never know .... Here in WA State in the US, you wouldn't be allowed to keep the hole open. It has to be refilled with 48 hrs before the hole is abandoned. We can't use a hand dredge in the creek either unless the water way is open for dredging (the timing is listed in a special booklet (The Gold and Fish Pamphlet) that is published by our State Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.

    • @dennispetersen1162

      You are also not allowed to work in the water unless it is dredge season. Panning or sluicing is allowed, but you can't dig. Just a difference in the rules. Great video!

      Generally regs. are in place during spawning times for the fish bedding in the region,spring or fall, slopping through the river would disrupt the beds in the river gravels and silts.....some rules have a very specific meaning and purpose...not everyone has an interest in fishing or fish habitat ,so they would not be aware of why it's restricted...

    Possibly silly question incoming: So if that creek is actively and reliably depositing gold in that pothole (assuming that because you already cleaned it out three years prior), would it eventually just fill completely with gold if left alone for hundreds/thousands of years? If yes, is that a thing that prospectors have found in the past? If not, why not? Also, thanks a bajillion for the excellent videos!

      He usually finds in the grams. An ounce would be a pretty badass find. Not that he hasnt found collectively alot, but in one video he seems to typically find 6 grams or less. Not saying he hasnt found more, just from the videos I've watched. I believe I looked it up the other day and I may be incorrect, but gold was going around $62.70 a gram. But that's always fluctuating. Just looked it up again and an ounce is just shy of $2,000. So yeah... an ounce is a badass find in my book.

    The only potholes up here in the Canadian Shield are about 10 ft. to 15 ft. wide made through heavy glacial movement during the last ice age retreat tens of thousands of years ago. These little things look like pinholes. When I return to the north I will dig around in them and see what I can find. Here in Canada it is a wise thing to get a prospectors license before heading out and to stake a claim quickly if you find anything.

  • @goldbunny1973

    Lovely creek... but I'm thinking you can use the pothole like a gold pan. Chuck a load of water into it and any gold in there will sink to the low spot bottom so than just pump out the watery 'overburden' and pan only what's at the bottom, save a whole lot of time?

    When I’m birding on a creek an see an open pothole, I put a large branch in it, if I know it’s there I take a shovel and fill it. An open hole like that is a death trap for wildlife. Larger ones are tiger traps! All kidding aside never leave a hole open , natural or man made. Knowing Dan I don’t have to question if he filled it! I know he made it safe!

    Dan my friend I have a question. If the Creek Police happen to walk by you right now what evidence would you have to prove you weren't using that hand dredge in the creek. I mean this video proves that you knew the law and we all watched you wash out that hole and I believe that you didn't use it in the creek but what evidence would you have to the contrary if the Creek Police seen you with it and said you did. Say for instance around here in South Carolina if you're on a boat and the police talk to you and you have a six-pack container but only have five empty beers they're going to give you a ticket for littering because they assume you got rid of that sixth beer in the water even though you brought that one beer short six pack out of your refrigerator and you drink that beer last week they're still going to give you a ticket because they believe you put it in the water would they treat you the same way

    i do believe if i was ever to brake there rules i would ask for a constitutional trial and only be subject to americam law and not some UN law.

    You could suck water from the creek to the pothole. Since your pulling clean water up and putting it in the pot hole . It should be ok with the spirt of the law to keep stream clean.

      Gravity Guy a better idea would be to put a bigger one in to create a gold trap. Empty it might just collect another grinding rock.
