Where to find gold? Potholes or Bedrock pockets.

- Another video on where you can find gold in a creek. This video focuses on "Potholes" those round pockets you find in bedrock cobbles spinning in high water flow and eroding almost perfectly circular holes down into the bedrock. This is just another place you might locate gold on a creek or river.

Thank you Dan I find these videos to be the most helpful! Just getting started prospecting and knowing where to start looking is a big help.
I have seen potholes in and near creeks and thought nothing of them. That is really neat. The only money better than hard earned money is found money!
Correct 👍👌
Thanks. I've never found gold in a pot hole. Now I see that was because they were still active. It might be good to put your finger in the shot of the gold so we can get a better idea of the size of the gold, This old prospector says thanks again.
The best gold here in this stream might be a few nice sized speckled trout.
Nice video, Dan. Thanks for sharing.
lol.. you keep looking around what you looking for bears or what ...lol
Always taking in the scenery!
Why would you not think that there's going to be any gold in that stuff you shoveled first for about 5 or 10 minutes I guess
gold is much heavier than all the surrounding sediment, therefore, for the same reason panning it works, youd expect the gold to settle on the bottom. any gold in the higher layer is likely to be few and far between, and not really worth the time and effort to get (i still pan it just because im like that, but if youre trying to make a living, time is money, and that top layer is wasted time for no real pay off)
Hi Dan Great creek, I was thinking though it would be fun to fish that creek also. I watched the video where you made your suction machine and I thought I could use it for one of my creeks. But now I'm needing to see if I can use it or not. Thanks for the show
Man that creek is gorgeous. I could stay on that all summer :)
Is it just me or does he keep looking up when he's panning like he's got the fever Lol. don't worry little buddy ,An't nobody coming to take ur gold.
he s looking for bears man

Ur eye's of ur surroundings
He's not on his property...

Dan, I'm in BC too not far from Vancouver. Let me know if I can join you on a trip I think we would have fun! Cheers
ArtifaXtreme don't bother he won't give you a help, he wouldn't give me the time of day to answer a question on Facebook what makes you think he would take anyone out
PioneerPauly. I'll come to the island and pan with you.. Watched every one of your videos multiple times . Paulys the man
My experience is when you see "the perfect spot" it usually has nothing. When you give up and just try somewhere random, you get gold. Murphies law.
That happened on the last video. I was sensing doubt. Than BAM
Man, in every part of life.
Same happens when I go fishing. I always feel like I''m sitting where I should be fishing and fishing where I should be sitting, even when I'm in a boat. Go figure.
The best way to find gold is look for the happiest prospector at the pub and beat him up in the bathroom and rob him. That or sell 'prospecting equipment' by buying it in bulk from China for $10 an item then resell it for $1,000 an item.
I just went gold panning for the first time and I can assure you this is a true statement
I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos. I'm retired, and a total newbie as of last fall. I fish, so my off season has been pretty much focused on learning to prospect. I'm i N Idaho where there is some gold, and I'm very excited to get out and use all you and other RUclips guys have taught me. It's a testament to your ability that I'm very confident to get out and a testament to your passion that I can't wait till winter is over to do it. Thank you
@Ember Rhapsody Yes, but I'm in my 70s and the hiking, kneeling on rocks, (even with knee pads) shoveling, scraping, panning makes me wish I'd beun 10 or 15 years earlier. I've pretty much reduced my efforts to carrying a 9" pan and a trowel in my fly vest and reading the hydrology while I'm out fishing!
So were you looking for wild animals, another person trespassing, or the police?
you seemed to be alone and when the camera zoomed in or out. kinda wigged me out.
His wife has filmed at times.
Thanks for the info. You've probably heard this plenty of times, but: I appreciate these videos as a humble amateur
I have found a rock that is brown in color and is crystal like. it is magnetic and has a red rubyish vein in it. Also it's very heavy. What is it ??? People say break it with hammer .. See what's inside
Dan, I heard guy on another advise us to save our black sand and check it for gold at day's end, as it can contain small flecks of gold. Do you agree?
Who else was waiting for the law enforcement official to suddenly appear?
I found some potholes in a river near me that I plan to try as soon as the ground thaws. Wish me luck
Any luck on the pothole gold?
Has the ground thawed, you have had 2 years since the comment. Have you gotten any gold 😀.
Wow.. Unfortunately, the only thing I found in the local potholes was lead. Promising, but not shiny
Not sure what makes you think there is no gold in the top foot and a half? If the bottom fills with 6 inches of sand there may be gold maybe not... but the next flood may deposit more sand, the next flood may wash in some gold flakes... where they gonna go? ON TOP OF THE SAND ! ! ! ! there is no way you can determine at what strata the gold was deposited, it may have been deposited in the Most recent flood - putting it on TOP. I would have run the entire batch through rough sorting one six inch layer at a time and record if there was any gold and if so what layer was it in ... however ... this does not ensure that the next hole will have anything in any particular layer, it all depends on what happened UPSTREAM during any specific high water event.... if it dug out some flakes on the last flood then you just shoveled out some flakes and threw them into the creek!
Gold is so heavy while there is water in there previous. It would drop to bottom and settle on or near bedrock. Reason probally he didn't check it. Imo
You keep looking around like your expecting someone or something to come out of the bush.
letschat you know what bears do in the woods?
I've had some luck cleaning out the old Dry Pock Holes here in the dry streams. Some of these rivers and streams only see a decent flow once in 20 years. Some schools of thought say if there is no packed gravel the hole will be fruitless. I don't agree with that.
Dan, I found a small hand operated bilge pump at a garage sale. It has crossbars on the bottom that limit the size of heavy material to 1/4" or so.
In trying it for the first time in a pothole, I did suck up some small gold. It worked great, and keeps the large material out. Best of all, it was $2.00!
Nice find
Ddssd
MAN THE BILGE PUMP!!!!
Heck of a find
Nice find bro. One of the handiest tools for crevicing or dredging around water.
Fyi some of them are like hand dredges and have a side thing so you can jook them straight up to a highbanker or sluice to pump your material straight in.
I would trust buying a claim from dan. He seems like he does honest work and protects the lands natural typography. 👍
I just wonder how much gold you threw out in the top layer of gravel??? I'm sure there had to be some gold that had not made it to the bottom yet... And you never looked in the sifter to see if just maybe you had a nugget in there, there' always a chance that one could have been there. I guess we'll never know .... Sometimes what we're looking for is in the place where we never thought it would be....
There probably wasn't one there though
I was wondering to about the dirt he thru out also..... Since I found a small rock with 9.5 grams of gold in my classifier. I just don't chuck it away ...
@@mikesebold1032 how much is that like 360 dollars or more?
Have you had bear walk up on you or what's the reason you are keeping your head on swivel?, it seems that you are hyper vigilant about watching your surroundings
One word... Sasquatch!!!
use a magnet to sort that black sand out. as it mostly iron.
That is why I have a huge magnet. Less panning
Thanks for another useful video! When you load up the pan so much, do you not consider losing some gold over the edges right when you first start panning it? I noticed some material was definitely falling over. I'm talking about before there has been a chance for it to stratify and let the heavies start to sink.
If he didn't fill it that full then they wouldn't have been there anyways
Hi m8 from Tasmania very intriguing wondering if any of our local creeks have gold in them around where I live on the north west coast of tassie 👍 is it present in all flowing creeks I know nothing
The question I have is, when your shoveling all the stuff out of the hole aren't you afraid that your shoveling gold out that hasn't had time to get to the bottem...? Couldnt there be gold in the gravel you shoveled out to get down where you started panning..??? Thanks. Just found your videos today and I've enjoyed them.
I wondered the same
I have never found any gold in the loose stuff on top. Once I get to the firmly packed stuff I start panning
I surely would like to know how you made that sucker thing... I've never seen one like that but it looks like it's made of nothing but PCV....
An Australian yabbi pump or bait pump look on this site www.bcf.com.au
I like your videos, you make it down to earth on this sort of stuff. Just curious, on your videos whatever nuggets you get, could you give us an estimate of how much money in gold there is in the pan? Thank you for your videos.
Your pan angle seems a bit drastic, even for using the ripple side of the pan, but hey I guess you’re leaving gold for the next guy so who am I to criticize your style. 😉slow dow, move faster. it’s not a race and I understand this is only a video, proper technique and patience are not underrated. You’re in good location and you’ve got the time/tools to do it proper.
Throwing gold away😂
How?
All these views could just be from people coming here to admire your luxurious and manly beard...
Ha!
@@Danhurd Well, I was impressed...
You working so hard. In the other vedio the Russian guy, I saw just picking big solid gold, without digging. I wish I could go there
Kasar Daily Vlogs for you I thought so
He's looking to check his back trail. And bears in them there hills.
I love these educational videos in the field on finding gold!! I also would love to see more class room teaching videos!!!!! Keep up the great channel!!!
I guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??

@Orion Travis i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.

@Orion Travis It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
@Colt Corbin Glad I could help :D
Here in WA State in the US, you wouldn't be allowed to keep the hole open. It has to be refilled with 48 hrs before the hole is abandoned. We can't use a hand dredge in the creek either unless the water way is open for dredging (the timing is listed in a special booklet (The Gold and Fish Pamphlet) that is published by our State Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.
You are also not allowed to work in the water unless it is dredge season. Panning or sluicing is allowed, but you can't dig. Just a difference in the rules. Great video!
LOL, BS rules for ordinary man that are of no consequence to anything. And no rules for massive destruction if you're a multibillion dollar corporation. Goold 'ol pos murrica.
Generally regs. are in place during spawning times for the fish bedding in the region, spring or fall, slopping through the river would disrupt the beds in the river gravels and silts.....some rules have a very specific meaning and purpose...not everyone has an interest in fishing or fish habitat ,so they would not be aware of why it's restricted...
Got to love you Dan, only you would call it biomass. We have other names for it! 😈
Jim Griffiths . .l
Possibly silly question incoming: So if that creek is actively and reliably depositing gold in that pothole (assuming that because you already cleaned it out three years prior), would it eventually just fill completely with gold if left alone for hundreds/thousands of years? If yes, is that a thing that prospectors have found in the past? If not, why not? Also, thanks a bajillion for the excellent videos!
The interbank will become farther from the edge of the river has the outer Bank erodes away the other side the theoretically yes there will be gold in the holes currently clearing land looking for the Bedrock so I can just begin clearing the cracks in the hole left behind from a ancient riverbed I can't wait to see if that's what happened clearing out holes and cracks isn't sealed for millennia
That's a beautiful creek!
Great vid brother. Looks fun but alot of effort for not much return. Now pulling out fish with a fly rod would be fun. Any fish in that creek. Peace love and blessings from Alberta.
i found some black sand in a pyritein nc near asheville, but within it ,was a gold lookin stuff, but it was like flakes,in layers don't think its gold, but looks gold,I know it isn't pyrite
I also have some same kinda stone.

I think he may be stuck to a spider web, but its totally true. I saw that too.
Holy fuck haha, whack
Lmao you forgot you need an iron pickaxe to mine gold
Ah! Of course
your making a bad name for panners ,you Dan did not fill the HOLE back in,WHY DAN WhY???..give us a bad name, Thanks man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another good one. Thanks for sharing what you know about, so us novices can learn.
Seriously....I can’t bring even my hand dredge with me to BC to prospect anymore?
They’ve finally gone strictly to panning then huh?
And here I was hoping to make a retirement gold prospecting trip to BC (I live in Washington State) in hopes of finding better than a spec or 2 like I normally find.
In this video alone you found more gold in that 1 hole than I have in total in 28 years of prospecting in Washington. I’m tired of spending a whole day for an average of 30 or so specs!!
Laws like that are ridiculous. Seriously, I wodnt give a f***. The land of the free remember?
Hy Dan greetings from Austria 🇦🇹✌️
We have some gold in our rivers but it's not as rich as yours I wish I could go panning with you one time I love your vids keep going I wish you some kilo nuggets ✌️😁👍
That was a beautiful spot Dan. Thankyou again for the lesson. Would there be gold deposited under that gravel bank at the end of the video?
🇺🇲👍⛏️💯
What would the value of the gold you found be? or how much of an ounce is that?
He usually finds in the grams. An ounce would be a pretty badass find. Not that he hasnt found collectively alot, but in one video he seems to typically find 6 grams or less. Not saying he hasnt found more, just from the videos I've watched. I believe I looked it up the other day and I may be incorrect, but gold was going around $62.70 a gram. But that's always fluctuating. Just looked it up again and an ounce is just shy of $2,000. So yeah... an ounce is a badass find in my book.
Is that one of your private claims, or a public creek? Nice looking gold! WY better than Washington State.....
Mr.Hurd , Hope all is well and that everyone is doing ok ,please say hello for me..... Thank you 🙏 for the video , good luck on finding I will chant for a good hunt this month see if it helps ..I do a offering of food and tobacco ,
It will help ...
I look at this man, sitting in a stream out there in God's own wonderland, and I think of all of us, in this polluted, congested, noise-laden excuse for a city, and I just want to cry....
The only potholes up here in the Canadian Shield are about 10 ft. to 15 ft. wide made through heavy glacial movement during the last ice age retreat tens of thousands of years ago. These little things look like pinholes. When I return to the north I will dig around in them and see what I can find. Here in Canada it is a wise thing to get a prospectors license before heading out and to stake a claim quickly if you find anything.
Lovely creek... but I'm thinking you can use the pothole like a gold pan. Chuck a load of water into it and any gold in there will sink to the low spot bottom so than just pump out the watery 'overburden' and pan only what's at the bottom, save a whole lot of time?
When I’m birding on a creek an see an open pothole, I put a large branch in it, if I know it’s there I take a shovel and fill it. An open hole like that is a death trap for wildlife. Larger ones are tiger traps! All kidding aside never leave a hole open , natural or man made. Knowing Dan I don’t have to question if he filled it! I know he made it safe!
Dan my friend I have a question. If the Creek Police happen to walk by you right now what evidence would you have to prove you weren't using that hand dredge in the creek. I mean this video proves that you knew the law and we all watched you wash out that hole and I believe that you didn't use it in the creek but what evidence would you have to the contrary if the Creek Police seen you with it and said you did. Say for instance around here in South Carolina if you're on a boat and the police talk to you and you have a six-pack container but only have five empty beers they're going to give you a ticket for littering because they assume you got rid of that sixth beer in the water even though you brought that one beer short six pack out of your refrigerator and you drink that beer last week they're still going to give you a ticket because they believe you put it in the water would they treat you the same way
You make this look so easy, and I want to start myself. Do you have a video on beginner equipment? I'm new to your channel. Thank you.
just a thought...maybe don't stand in the creek as you use the sucker... that might blur the lines of right or wrong
Your videos have come so far, easy to see this one of the early ones, love your work, and watching your progression super fun
How much gold did you displace digging out that one hole at 6:15 ??
Do potholes in the roads work?
Nice gold find, I would love to win my first piece of gold or find my first piece of gold, nice video, keep doing the great videos
I cannot imagine the justification for disallowing that hand dredge. Leave it to idiot bureaucrats who believe "Just say no"
did anyone else see the eels (or fish?) at 14.40? there appears to be a play of light on the bottom just in front of the pan, then something comes through that is moving. or is it just my eyes?
Don't you ever have problems with snakes around those weeds and streams? That's what I'm afraid of and keeps me from getting out in them.
Please stop calling it a dredge, its a hand-pump, a dredge is a motorized pumping system...the Feds need to understand the difference to allow us the use of these tools
so dan are these laws concerning gold mining, are they canadian or are you also under the agenda 21 like we are here in norcal?
i do believe if i was ever to brake there rules i would ask for a constitutional trial and only be subject to americam law and not some UN law.
When you're sitting panning, you keep looking around. Are you looking for bears?
No dude... Sasquatch!!!
You could suck water from the creek to the pothole. Since your pulling clean water up and putting it in the pot hole . It should be ok with the spirt of the law to keep stream clean.
thnx dan new subscriber live in babine area i know where there are a lot of these potholes you have shown , am excited now.
Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the channel!
Where can I get one of those yabby pumps? By the way, LOVE the beard, sir!! 👍😎
Wow a country that even regulates a hand made siphon .... just wow..... ps love these videos
Love your kind intelligent way thank you for taking me along with you on panning for gold ..awesome awesome thank you
If you find a pothole with a large rock which crushes the smaller items, why not remove the larger rock so yu can mine the pot hole in 2 or 3 years?
Dude ,bro , I had no idea nature was drilling holes in river bottom bedrock !
That's cool 😎
recent rains can deposit nuggets in top layer. the hole does not shake it down to the bottom. You are just looking for black sand I guess.
Hey Dan I like your videos have you thought about coming to Colorado
Thanks - I haven't thought about prospecting Colorado.
@@Danhurd Search RUclips for Colorado culvert mining. Culverts act like a sluice box. Pretty awesome!
that is some very interesting lookin bedrock! could you post a link in a vid for the revised restrictions? do u find the hand dredge is easier to use without a collection cup? i like how the end is removable on it. do u find amalgum on that creek?very nice lookin creek!
So what would be the value of those 15 pieces? What is the largedt amount you found at one time in your searches?
Are you allowed to pan on crown land? Are you allowed to use a sluice on crown land in BC? Thanks
Irrrrr finding gold are ya? If you don't look? you will never know. That what i would do make a natural rock sluice box
I'm looking forward to this season. I will be using my equinox 800.
Dan you are looking around like expecting a bear or the authorities to show up or maybe bandits? 😂
You can tell this video is kinda old by the way he set it up. How long have you been making these videos, Dan?
Who is really going to catch you using a hand dredge in the water anyway? Rules. Some people are so scared.
What do you think of Maximov Ro channel? Is he faking it? Please check it out.

You’re the expert, but why not remove that hole grinding rock so that next time it may have gold.

With the dirt piled up so high in the pan, I would think you stand to lose a lot of gold when you first start to shake the pan
