- I have an updated bone arrowhead video here:
• 221 - Making a Cahokia...
Bone arrowhead, basic shape for hunting. Cut on a bandsaw, then ground on 40 grit belt.
Notches were cut in with a Dremmel tool and a circular cutting wheel. The bone was purchased from Petsmart and is a dog chew bone. One bone which will yield about a dozen arrowheads of this size. Large, bleached, white, cow bone.
Bone arrowhead manufacture (with primitive tools) is slower in comparison to knapping an arrowhead from stone. However, there are very few failures. Note: Cow bone is weaker than deer or elk bone.

I’ve been interested in making bone arrow heads. This was the perfect video. Thank you Mr. Jack Crafty!
You're very welcome
It takes me about an hour to make a bone arrowhead with a simple sandstone abrader. Deer bone, very dry, seems to work best for me. Make sure there is NO grease on the bone or it will gum up the abrading stone.
I don't polish them. But if I wanted to I would used very fine grit sandpaper and then buff it on a wheel.
Ahhhhh, the smell of grinding bone. Something you never forget.
Fee, if, fo, fum...
i guess it is kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to stream newly released movies online?
@Louie River Flixportal =)
@Brodie Gianni thanks, signed up and it seems to work :) I really appreciate it !!
@Louie River Happy to help =)
Great Video. I tried flint knapping. Might try this now.
Cool. Bone is definitely much easier.
Yes it is! I tried flint knapping with glass first time. I have them (roughed in) and it looks lovely, but it appears when I reach a certain point I cannot get my flakes to "channel in" then the edges get flat and I can't flake it at all. I have several just stuck here. I'm not sure if it's a hand strength issue ( I'm a woman) or technique. eh. yea.
Yes, you can heat treat bone, to get the moisture out, but it gets more brittle as it gets darker. Too much heat will actually "cook" and weaken the bone.
that made an awesome point will have to give it a try thanks for the vid
That is a Ryobi Rotary Tool HT20VS. I don't think they make that model any more. I've had that tool for quite a while.
hi..can you help me ..how can ı whiting the bone

J.C. : Great vid , thanks . I make the same style, but put serrations down both edges. They look just like the bone Cahokia in Overstreet. Best wishes from N. E. Texas.
cool. get a gopro with the head mount. i was wincing and hoping you wouldnt chop your digits off.
I've already done this one a while ago. just got 3 stone one's this week. looking for a knife blade next😁👍 ceremonial of course
I see
My friend that was just beautiful.
Lol the clock at the end😂
😁
could you heat treat the bone to make it harder in order to get a sharper edge?
I made some of these for my Atlatl darts months ago using the exact same tools! The smell reminded me of the dentist grinding my teeth! Not pleasant memories! Thanks for your videos! Got to go and try out my indirect bopper and Ishi stick on some glass!
I would think antler tips would be good material for arrow and spear points. I wonder how it compares to bone. Antlers are used in flint knapping, so they must be pretty good tough!
Antlers don't really have a sharp point and that's what makes the arrow deadly an arrow without any sharp edges or points is completely useless unless ur going to be using it for practice yes antlers are used for flintknapping but u can't use them as arrowheads unless u managed to get a sharp tip on it if not than best to use some sharp stone flakes or another sharp tip
Antler is heavier and more impact resistant than bone, so yeah, they were used a lot back in the day. The problem is they take longer to make than stone points, and they don't cause as much bleeding.
i do not have power tools and would like one is there a way to purchase one from you?
You sir, are one skilled man. You just got another subcriber!
I will tell you that I loved the video and it helped me out a lot.
what kind of blade did you use to cut the bone? Wood-cutting? Metal-cutting?
Ever heard of this great invention called a 'camera tripod stand'? You should try it sometime... try and avoid accidents ;)
Yeah, I made another bone arrowhead video with a tripod and I can't seem to find it. They should invent a "tripod" for brain function. I need one. :-)
Thanks. Yeah, there is a very slight risk of mad cow disease if the bone contains marrow residue and has not been sterilized by heat or chemicals. Otherwise, bone dust is not any more hazardous than other organic dusts.
that wouldn't be a problem since he bought it from a pet store and it was bleached
Nice! That's a sweet camera. I have to get it now. You know, to save the digits....;-)
Pěkně udělané skvěle vysvetlené díky. Jsi zběratel, nebo i hroty prodáváš?
Thank you!
They cost $7.00 plus tax here! Now! 2-10-13, so I bought a roast with a bone in it ! Now I get to eat the roast and use the bone! Double bonus! Thanks for the bone idea. Dinner will be great too! With something fun to do later on with the bone! Sorry dog, I get the bone this time!
I'm using a cow scapula you think that works?
Yes, the scapula is very strong.
Thanks!!
Awesome!
Cool!
Can you get it shaving sharp?
@TheTeenageCaveMan My nose is too stuffy to smell anything right now but you're right. And, yes, it is a dog bone. :-)
Does it kill tho?
Yes
Do u boils the bone first?
What’s the process you use to prepare the bone ?
I buy the bone. It has been cleaned and then whitened with a bleaching process.
JackCrafty ah ok it looks like it’s just dried out and bleached but thought I’d ask I can only buy the raw bones here
I’m learning to make arrows and want bone instead of stone
Bone is a good choice.
@Ashbow2 Hahah... I knew someone would catch that! I think I had 5 takes before I finally had something I could post. Believe me, you wouldn't want to see the previous vids...
Cool project but the state of your bandsaw table made me want to cry : (
Yeah, it's pretty bad. But I don't want to oil/wax it because I cut a lot of wood that must remain oil/wax free for finishing purposes. It's a lot easier to wipe off a little rust. :-) And besides, I have to keep this tool outside due to the lack of ventilated space in my shop.
Man thats nice.. Awesome vid
I found an arrowhead when I was fishing this summer and I have no clue what it is. it's white and kinda big.
+Kyle King If you have a facebook page, you can post a picture of it and maybe someone could tell you what kind it is. Or maybe post a video?
Thanks for this
Glad you like this old video. :-)
Awesome! You gotta love power tools I need to try this you just got one more subscriber:)
Anyone know if 86 Grains is heavy, light,or ideal for this sort of arrow head?
I think 60 grains is average for bone points. If you make them really thin it's about 30 grains.
Would like to see ya make one from PVC !
Easy peasy.
@@KnapperJackCrafty : then go for it brudda !
How do u polish it
this is so cool good video
Thanks
what is the tool at 4:50
Yep. It's the only way to fly. ;-)
@pup9et The bleached bone isn't too bad but no one wants to watch (and stand close) when I do these....heheh
as an avid bushcrafter and hunter i like the idea of using bone vs flint. i just cant see myself bringing my bandsaw, belt sander and dremel into my perma-shelter. nice video. do try to be safe though huh. you need both hands to flintknap.
Yeah, the 10 minutes becomes 60 minutes in the back 40. I've made bone arrowheads with nothing but a blocky-shaped rock but it eats up a lot if video. And I wouldn't watch it. heheh. :-)
Ive yet to attempt any knapping and right now i have about 3 ft of snow covering everything. Do you have any rock type specific videos? Living in the Canadian Shield i have a ton of granite and who knows what kind of river stone.
I could definatly use a course on identifying rock types.
The best rock ID device is a ball peen hammer. It doesn't really matter what type of rock it is as long as it chips correctly. I tell people that all the time and it seems too simple. But it's not complicated. Heck, I don't know the names of half the rocks I knap. :-)
Thanks for the tip. I have a hatchet I use in the bush secondary to my axe. I'll try grinding a corner on the head of my hatchet to mimic a ballpeen hammer for when im out and about. All of my tools must have multiuse or I cant fathom having them along.
Anyway thanks for the help. Currently running through a number of your series and especially enjoyed the sinew cordage. Keep'em coming. Great inspiration is often hard to come by.
D
Favorite like and subscribe is what I did because of this
@pup9et You're welcome.
looks good, I think you have done that before
Yep, many times. :-)
ever make any out of antler? they seem to have that soft spot in the middle. the cow femur looks like a good material to work with
corkdecoys1 Yeah, I've made a few. They look like cones, I drill out the soft part.
@wildbushcraft1 Thanks!
@richard16372 Yeah, abo tools would take a while. The title might be "60 Minute Quick Bone Arrowhead with Abo Tools"..... heheh
Nope, you can't shave with it even if you polish the edge. Bone is not hard enough.
Practice, practice. :-)
Hi mate
Nice bone arrow tip ...but you really need a tripod for your video-camera ...😯😯😯
Yes, quite correct. I have another bone arrowhead video. I use a tripod for this: ruclips.net/video/nvs9F80N9x0/видео.html
Metal-cutting.
Fun project...I subbed :o)
Cool!
very nice video, though you should remind everyone that bone dust is very BAD for your lungs, make sure to wear the proper protection, very minimum a dust mask, better a respirator
Whoa! Whoa!...NEVER HAVE YOUR HAND IN THE PATH OF A BANDSAW BLADE! One distraction or slip up and off goes your thumb! Grip the piece against a mitre fence and slide it past the blade; or with a channelock on the mitre fence to brace it for a pass. Remember safety!...Don't want you to lose a hand or have your viewers make a tragic mistake. Otherwise great video!
Thanks. I'm thinking of deleting this video and doing it over with a safer and more professional approach. The problem is time...
I have to agree. great video my only issue is if someone less skilled (like a kid, or dumb teenager) watches this and goes hey I can do it one handed too and they lose a thumb. otherwise again awesome video I never would have thought to use a dog bone.
Very nice point but a far cry from using abo tools lol.
Nice video
Richard
Do you still have all your fingers....????🤔🤪
Thos video is 11 years old. Check out my newest ones and you'll find out.😁
Cut some bone and you'll find out.
I can't use a band saw if I'm out in the wild trying not to die of hunger
Yeah, especially when you just crushed the bone you found (into bone meal) so you can eat it.
@@KnapperJackCrafty point proven but I'm not going to eat bone for the rest of my homeless plane crashed ass life I'm not saying this is a bad vid it's well made but if you could make a vid on how to make a bone arrow head without powered tools it would be great info if you all ready have plz leave a comment thank you
Yeah, I've been meaning to make a bone arrowhead video that doesn't have any modern tools. The arrowhead takes about an hour, FYI. I prefer deer bone. Hopefully I'll have time to make the video before the holidays.
@@KnapperJackCrafty if you could that would be great thank you
great vid. hope you wore a mask. bone dust of any kind can be harmful to you lungs.
Cow bone is stronger ....denser
What's up with his tools being dull as shit?
Make sure to wear a dust mask
@MILOSLAVJMP Som zberateľ len. :-)
Send me an address in a personal message and I'll send you one.

Do yourself a favor buy a cheap vise
I had one during this video. Didn't use it because it requires 2 hands. Hello.
JackCrafty what kind of belt sander is that called? I'm looking for one like that
It's an old "DELTA Shopmaster" 4"x36" belt sander and 6" disc sander. You can still find these on Ebay or you can buy something similar for around $120.
I made the arrowhead so ugly
That's too silly to believe.
