So many guitarists played through Fender Bassmans that Fender eventually just gave up on insisting it was a bass amp & listed it as a guitar amp
Its bacause of the watt is so small to compare to the latest bass amp with hundreds of watt.
@@azmuzik6889 Wrong! It's because the Bassman 410 sounds great with electric guitar. Don't believe me? Then do your own research and stop spouting your mouth out of ignorance Az.
To be fair, there was very little difference between early bass amps and guitar amps.
@@PeterDad60 damn
The Fender Bassman Amp was the design inspiration for the early Marshall amplifiers. On the other hand, a good friend of mine was gifted an Ampeg bass amplifier and while it gave him more power than his cheaper original amplifier, the lack of high end was noticeable. At this point in time -aroung 1968-1968) Ampeg's philosophy (even more so than Fender) was anti distortion and overdrive crunch seemed lacking. (In fairness to Ampeg, they made one of the best sounding guitar amps I ever heard in the mid to late 1980's).
I have played keyboard through a bass amp (Hartke) and was very disappointed in how muddy it sounded. (I like clarity and highs in sound).
So, as the guys said, modern bass amps have more high frequency room. Some even have high frequency drivers so the trebly bass guitar sound can be heard.
Since there have been so many bass amp designs through the years, it depends on the amp.
Also, in the famous encounter between Clapton and Hendrix, Hendrix plugged into Jack Bruce's bass amp.
Which underscores the point that, except for certain manufacturers (like Amped) bass and guitar amps at that time were closer in design than those later developed.
My first awesome amp head was it actually a Peavey mark IV Bass amp. I absolutely loved it! It was built like a tank and it weighed a ton, so at 400 w I absolutely loved jamming with it because most drummers would actually stop playing and ask me to turn down because they couldn't hear themselves. 😂
That's funny, because I use a mk vi Peavy bass amp as my main tool now. It is like 50 lbs lol. I have played with stuff I had already. And I bought the bass amp from a friend years ago. And was using it as a pa amp for a decade. Then I had an old crate tube amp that died. And said wonder how the 2 together sound. Need to have a pedal board. But the sound was so good. I just put my fender mustang away. I have a boss katana ii for travel. Because the Peavy and broken tube amp weight like 125 lbs together. But at home it's my go to. It's got an eq and sound gates for low and high frequency. So it's easy to dial in the sound you want.
Just played on my fender rumble 25 and my guitar came out sounding awesome with my pedal through it as well
i have a rumble 25 too and it won’t pick up the top few strings of my guitar, how’d you do it?

"sort of usable". oh please, that markbass sounded good enough to have been tracked on any famous recording.
next: can you play Guitar through a Car-stereo set ? ;) could be nice in a traffic-jam
This sounds like fun!
//Andy
Top Gear did that with Clapton, so yes.
Yes you absolutely can! Kinda sounds like a studio with the windows up lol
yeah you can i did it all the time
Back in the days amps have been built as "Instrument amplifiers", not as dedicated guitar or bass amp.
Remember the Stones on their 1969 USA tour buying the complete first production run of Ampeg SVT (12 of them) for bass, guitar and keyboard? The engineer that designed the amp came with them on tour to service the amps every time after a gig.
Back in the days FOH was just for the singers and maybe for drums. Amps have not been as loud as today, speakers didn't have the same SPL as modern speakers today.
Often the crowd was louder as the band, because venues became bigger. Because of this the Beatles stopped playing live.
So everything was about volume in this days.
So a 300 Watt Ampeg SVT just came right for the stadium Tour of the Stones.
You see, it is nothing new playing guitar over a Bass amp.
In 1969 the Rolling Stones ALL played through Ampeg SVT’s! Very loud!
I've been playing electric guitar through bass combos almost as long as I've been playing guitar (about 12 years now). I started on bass guitar, but my church group needed an electric guitarist, and I already had the amp so hey, I was halfway there. I found a deal on an early-model Highway-1 Strat, spent 5 minutes learning CCM's open chords (OK that's an exaggeration, 10 minutes), plugged it into the Peavey 2x10 combo I'd bought for the bass, and that was my guitar sound for a decade, sacred or secular. I *finally* invested in a Bassbreaker 30R as an honest-to-God guitar amp just this year, and thanks to COVID it still hasn't gigged.
So yeah, you can go a long way, and have a *lot* of fun, running a guitar through a few pedals into a bass amp. If your tone comes from a pedalboard into the front of a clean vintage Fender, you might not even notice a difference; other than clean boosts (which are just volume knobs when you have this much headroom), bass amps do the pedal platform thing extremely well.
Umm hi. I have a bass amp and an electric guitar. Whenever I play distortion my sound becomes way to bassy despite keeping the bass super low. Can anyone suggest me what to do.

Playing guitar thru a bass amp defines the sound of a whole genre. Just say Kyuss...
It was even before this, a lot of early death metal bands played on huge bass amps with distortion pedals in the front. I have to admit, I did think Kyuss were a younger band.
The marshall head are based on fender bassman amp

Distortion through a bass amp is soo smooth, and also just agree with the eq pedal thing.
Yes. I'm not a rocker, but I still thought that low midrange distortion thru a bass amp was killer
absolutely!..I use my fender rumble 100w on gigs it’s light and sounds very good!🤘
Yup.
Is it loud enough for a small venue? I have a fender mustang gt 100 and it sharts itself when I use fuzz and play low notes in E standard, have to compensate by turning the volume down or effect which isn't going anywhere. Would buying a 100w bass amp be good enough?
I would have loved to hear the guitar also through an Ampeg and a Darkglass Amp
We can make that happen!
//Andy
Do it!
I'd be really happy
I currently play my guitar through a Darkglass 500 and ampeg 410 (with the horns almost all the way turned off) and it sounds great. Just get some gain stage pedals in the front and it rocks!
At home I sometimes play through just an ampeg ba110 practice bass amp in drop b and it sounds awesome! Ola would be proud!
Just connected my guitar through my rumble 30 (old bass amp btw) along with a distortion pedal. It sounds so awesome and it feels like a cab
HILARIOUS; the Little Mark III is *exactly* the amp I have that I’m using for guitar. LOVE IT. Lots of headroom.
***FOR ME*** (and my setup), I have it set as:
Gain: 9:00
Lo: ~9:00
Mid Lo: 12:00
Mid Hi: ~1:30
Hi: ~1:00
VLE: 0 (“Off”)
VPF: 0 (“Off”)
Master: As needed; this is my main volume knob.
Speaker cab is a homemade 2x12 that I REALLY like playing through.
To offer context, I have a Gibson Flying V (2 humbuckers) and a Fender Highway One Strat (that I play through a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster to “match” the Flying V.
Because it’s a bass amp and has tons of headroom, I intentionally use it for a clean platform. Any drive/distortion/etc, I get from pedals.
I used the FX Loop for a little while for modulation/time-based effects, but given the headroom and the fact that I’m not even trying to push the preamp section, I go straight into the front of the amp.
Of note: If you go right into the FX Return (and completely bypass the preamp), the EQ knobs still work. No idea how/why that’s the case; that’d be a question for MarkBass.
P.S.: I’m *primarily* a bassist, but dabble with, and have tons of fun with, guitar. I ‘do’ have 2 Mesa/Boogie 50 Cal plus amps that I LOVE, but the MarkBass is light and easy to work with.
;p
Cheers, all!

Adam Jones of Tool uses a Marshall super bass 100 with both channels wired together. Beastly setup.
I play my Ric 4004 cii bass and my Jackson RR 24 guitar through a Marshall jcm 2000 tripple lead 100 watt all tube guitar head, through a Marshall 4 x 10 bass cab.
When I use my Ric bass, on one channel on the head I cut all the bass and Highs and up all the mids and set the presence to 8. My Ric sounds killer.
Been playing both my guitar and bass with this set up for over four years and haven't had any issues with the head or cabinet.
I’m playing bass through old 1977 2x12 Marshall Master Lead! And it’s sounds absolutely incredible!
You should try to fully crank a 300w Ampeg 8x10 stack.
That's freaking awesome, but insanely LOUD!!! It even has great overdrive. No stompbox needed.
My rig is basically the 150w version of this and it rips. Funnily enough it dounds nice and wsrm on my actual bass which is passive without much grit in the pickups
Since I've seen this video for a first time, I decided to try out a bass amp for guitar... You know what? I LOVE IT. I started as bass guitar student, so I used my DIY 1x15" cab with TC BH250 head. Great for pedals, for playing clear and driven. How it sounds distorted... It lacks a hi end a bit, but warmth and depth compensates everything. Love that setup. Thanks guys.
I think 7 8 and 9 strings should most definitely be tried on bass amps.
I love playing 6-string through my bass amp
yeah i love the uncolored clean tone of a bass amp for guitar playing
Will it ruin my bass amp or my guitar???
Me too, so I can switch guitar and bass practice in my room, no need to buy both type of amp.
An Eq pedal would help though ..
I work at a pawnshop and hooked up a electric Keith urban guitar to a crate bass amp and it sounded badass
I used a Peavey 200w Mark VI stereo Bass rig for my guitar for 15 years. It was amazing, well able to handle anything i threw at it
Lol that's what I'm using now. I had that head powering my pa for a decade. And had a dead 2 12 tube amp sitting around. And put them together and found my new favorite sound. Only problem is they both weigh so much it's not what I'm traveling with.
As far as I know Doyle from the Misfits is playing through a bass rig. Someone correct me If I’m wrong.

Didn't Duane Allman play through some sort of Marshall?
Edit: this page says a Marshall Bass 50w Model 1986(not the year it was made obviously) and a Marshall Bass model 1935 with salt & pepper grill cloth. One of these is actually owned by Derek Trucks now.
Use a rumble 25 for my guitars - great clean tone, agrees well with pedals. Just great sounds 👌
relieving news! i have a rumble 15 and i'm not so sure we'll be able to afford a marshall as well as a new electric guitar so knowing i can run it through a bass amp is good
@JCD Yep! Totally works. Get some used pedals and you're good to go. Market is flooded!
I play an Acoustic 450 bass head through an SWR 1x18 cab and it sounds HEAVY! For the clean tones I play on an old Sears bass amp that sounds really great with an eq. Really as long as you have an eq pedal you can get a great tone on a bass amp.
A thing to look out for is bass cabs that don't have a horn
Miccing up a tweeter and woofer then blending them makes for lovely tones and massive versatility
I've got an early 1960's Ampeg B12X, same amps as a B15N, but with 12" speaker, reverb and vibrato. I use it for practicing bass, and it sounds like James Jamerson - it gets THAT sound. That said, I'm either going to get a more powerful speaker than the C12N Jensen in it for playing bass, or an external cabinet.
Always wondered if that works out, so thanks for answering that question for me!
You’re welcome, frank! Hope you never have to. (Unless it’s a bassman)

I have 8 different guitar heads, and a few bass heads and cabs. My peavey firebass and my guitar sounds so ridiculously good that I prefer to play that over any combination I have
I used to use a Selmer Treble and bass, not a problem with that.
As a bass player I'd happily DI if need be, while mocking the suffering guitarist.
I use to play my guitar through a peavey tk65 (?) bass amp. Add a Boss distortion pedal and you get great punch and nice bottom end. Plus if you really crank it up and play The Zoo by the Scorpions you even get a visit from the police. 😀

You certainly can, I had an ashdown tourer bass amp which was valve driven, it sounded beautiful to my ears. I was careful not to drive it too hard though.
I tried a 5150 via a bass cab. Like the heaviest amp in the universe vibe.
I run my les Paul through a traynor block amp with some distortion and overdrive and it sounds incredible
you guys blush at eachother like a middle school couple
During my first year in high school our band had 4 guitar players (one of them later switched to bass, and other one also played ukulele) and only one of them had amp, and school only had bass amp. At first it wasn't a problem because other guitarists played acoustic and classical guitars, but when one of them switched to electric, she played it through bass amp (which had two inputs) and it sounded ok, maybe little to bassy, but better EQ probalby would help. However when she and the bassist played simultaneously guitar couldn't be heard very much. BTW Me (then keyboard player for the band) and the bassist also owned amps at this point, but we weren't bringin' them, we didn't need to bother because it was unnecesary for rehersals, bassist once brought his, but it ended up not getting used.
Also one year earlier, when I was about to get an amp I actually wanted bass amp, not guitar amp, because I knew you can played guitar through bass amp, but not bass through guitar amp. I didn't owned a bass and didn't wanted to be a bassist, but I knew it could be helpfull, but I didn't know bassist can just play without an amp. I ended up buying Orange Crush 35W with is a guitar amp, but it has a lot of low end, and you kinda can play bass through it too.
So I have same Orange amp. Sounds pretty cool with a Telecaster but not so good with Stratocaster. I stick to playing bass thru it.
I actually owned only Strat-type guitar when I bought that amp, at first I didn't like it, because previously I plugged the guitar straight into home stereo, which resulted in very clean tones, but then I started to like it. It sounds great when I use middle+bridge pickups, I modded that guitar to be able to use bridge and neck pickups at the same time, and it sounds great too. But I can't hear any difference when I turn mid know, I'm little bit worried If that amp have enough mids to cut thru when playing with full band. Also overdrive was dissapointing, when I played that Strat or some other guitars I sometimes didn't even realised that overdrive is on. Few times I even finished recording guitars for some demos, wondering why amp sounded so bad, then I realised overdrive is on! But then I got Harley Benton DC Custom and pickups of that guitar must had higher output that pickups of my other guitars, because suddenly overdrive actually sound the way I like, and actually this is sound I was looking for. I'm selling this guitar now, but with different pickups, I put stock ones in my other guitars.
for years i just plugged my distortion pedal into my harley benton 20w bass combo. at multiple times i thought i needed a practice guitar amp. i tried a fender mustang combo, a marshall practice amp and a small orange cube. it all sounded worse, especially at high gain. only the fender could make a point when using bluesy tones. i have to admit none of them were tube driven, but i guess i just liked the roll of in the high frquencies combined with a nice distortion pedal (digitech hardwire) better than the fizzly shit that came out of the others... 😂
ALSO: i find it so funny, that most guitar players seem to insist so hard on having a real amp at all situations and beeing miced up, even if it really makes everything very complicated. sometimes i think a cure could be to make them play through a naked DI sound to their headphones to play more to their liking without twisting knobs and buying tons of gear! just my 2cts ;-)
Queens of the stone age did this too right? thats why Josh Homme cranked the midrange up 20-30db
Our guitar player uses just a DI straight to the FOH. Sounds actually amazing, even with dirt.
Me on the other hand, love to play with a Bass amp, but because of laziness i also switched to a Sansamp.
With that being said, no fight about the bass amp in our Band! ;)

So... guitar straight into the mixer or does he have a pedal board?
//Andy
Thomann's Guitars & Basses well, he has the Boss GT-1000, and some fancy vocal effects stuff. but no amp sim or anything like that.
It's not unusual for basses to produce bell like mids and highs if a bassist so chooses. You'll be just fine chugging away through the same rigs or even down to modest combos. Been there done that like all the other bass/guitar players commenting.
I Played thru a SWR workingman's 12 for a few years. I shut off the tweeter and had a ton of rack gear to Eq the living heck out of it. I cut a ton of bass out of my dirty sounds to stop the flub. We got by till I could get a nice 412 cab...then the band broke up that's life for ya. Always have a back up for unknown back line :)
You should play that on your channel!

Yes they should own an EQ Pedal and I do. MRX 10 Band. Mini amp 44 Magnum?

That EHX 44 Magnum came to my mind, and also one thing would be to pair that with a real bass amp as an actual guitar rig, they might be very complimentary. I pair a tiny Squier bass practice combo with a Vox NT2 into an AlNiCo 12" for an authoritative bedroom tone.
I am not a guitar player and I play Rhodes Mark ii and even MRX 10 Band works for Rhodes sound

I just got a Fender Rumble 115 cabinet, which I'm either pairing with a Marshall DSL1HR
or an Egnater Tweaker 15.
I play guitar (6 and 7-string, the latter I may drop to A) and bass (got a Fender Jazz, always wanted a 5-string Ibanez SoundGear). And I might wanna plug some synthesizers in just for fun...
I used a Fender FrontMan 15 or 25 bass combo for a while for all of these (got lots of pedals, studio effects, Eurorack stuff, so I can "sculpt" my sound... once I get all my gear set back up again!), but gave it to my son with his first guitar (bitchin' Ibanez RG, I'm actually jealous, it's nicer than mine, except for my Duncan JB and Jazz pickups!).
It's happened to me the other way round---i.e. I've had to play my bass through a guitar amp when my bass amp went phut. Not ideal but it got me through the gig.
Think of the Marshall Superbass Amps Lemmy used all the times.
Bye bye speakers...
I love putting my bass through a Roland Acoustic Chorus, but I usually run it to a small bass speaker to get the bottom to it.
You could run a guitar and a bass through a PA system with an appropriate pedal board and get great results.
Think DICK DALE!! Bass amps makes your sound or tone not in terms of being more loud, but by being more sonic with the right preferable choice amount of midrange, bass and treble especially with a wide graphic eq to shape your sound and also your speaker cab configuration is crucial also..
I guess the best way to use a bass amp for guitar would be to run your board with a EQ or PREAMP and go in the amp through the "FX RETURN" to bypass the preamp section and only use the power amp section.
As a bass player I don't mind playing through the PA , it happened .. but I m always wondering if high gain high pitch distortion will damage the bass cab or will it take it .
