    Fixing the timeline: Jane is wearing a ridiculously out-of-date outfit because it's a hand-me-down from an aunt that was out of touch, and since Jane isn't particularly fashion-forward, she doesn't care.

    I always assumed that Tarzan was shipwrecked in the late 60s or early 70s, and that Jane and her father came in the mid 80s. They make frequent reference to Queen Victoria being alive and kicking, so it has to take place before 1901.

    • @1981Marcus
      @1981Marcus 3 месяца назад

      In the book it's well past Victoria's death, as the shipwreck is in 1888 and Tarzan's had time to grow up.

    Possible silhouette theory: a more structured silhouette like the bustle enhances how out of place and foreign Jane is in the jungle. She wears more flowy, natural silhouettes as the movie progresses which reflects her character change as well. Starting with an Edwardian silhouette wouldn't give as great a contrast. Just a thought.

    "thank god I grew out of thinking that feminiine things are bad" Oh boy does that one ever resonate. I still do a lot of not traditionally girly things (automotive repair, renovations, construction, drywalling, plumbing, martial arts, armouring and armoured fighting) but lately have mostly reconciled with the colour pink (purple's still better but I've got pink laces on my well-used steel-toed work boots) and doing a whole lot of more traditionally female crafts like sewing and crocheting and preserving. I think identify best as a self-rescuing princess :)

    I think they put the bustle in for the visual gags. I clearly remember seeing under her skirt and the bustle while she was carried by Tarzan in the jungle in a few shots. And I'd do a Princess Tiana look! I love the white dress she wears during the Almost There number, and since that sequences is very simply animated I think it'd be the perfect opportunity to take some artistic license and do an elaborate 1920s evening gown.

  • @SimpleDesertRose
    @SimpleDesertRose 3 года назад +1

    I always felt Jane was underrated by Disney. I just loved how ridiculous she looked tramping through the jungle in her high necked yellow bustle dress and parasol. But at the same time I felt so relatable to her. Lets face it we have all had our awkward moments. For me i always wanted to dress up then go running off into the woods with a good book or a pad of paper and colored pencils. None of which my parents would allow. Nor was I even allowed to make my own princess dresses out of old sheets and blankets. If I had then I imagine I might have looked every bit as silly as Jane did. Now I imagine i might make something a little more historically accurate for an African safari. I even have a skirt picked out and a potential shirt I would use from Truly Victorian. I might pick up that idea again when I finish my current projects. I just finished a chemise with blackwork embroidery and am about to start a pair of stays and a petticoat to go with a new Renaissance dress I am making. This is my hopeful thinking that we will someday be allowed to attend large social functions again project.

    I'm with you on the searching for brunette Disney heroines department, there are so many blondes, come on 😅 Not to mention she was a smart cookie, and as a young nerd I related deeply. (Belle came later into my life, when I didn't really give a shit about princesses anymore, so Jane will always be the first)
    As far as the shirt goes, considering it's animation and the design is simplified, I do think it's possible for it to be a shirt and not a bodice. I don't know the historical accuracy of it, but I've seen shirts that had a different colour under and over the collar, so Jane's shirt collar could have a white underside that gets hidden when the shirt is unbuttoned. And the purple cravat she uses hides the buttons when it's closed. Why wouldn't they show these details? Idk, something something animation is simplified, it wasn't important to show? It made sense to me back then, at least.

    I always pictured that Jane and her father had been adventuring for most of her life. While she was brought up with manners by her father's privilege, she was either wearing her mother's clothes or fashion was procured from the places that she went. So while it was portrayed in Edwardian era because they traveled so often there was no fast fashion or waste of much kind that she would have hung on to her clothes for as long as possible, hence the Victorian style.

    I'd always assumed the shirtwaist/bodice were one and the same with a detachable starched collar and hidden closures 😳😯 I just figured it was a bit much detail to draw for a feature length 2D animation; one of the reasons we get such detail in the 3D is that the animators can make a model and copy the details across exactly frame by frame.
    Historically adequate inspired clothes/costumes are always fun to create and drawing from the original character sketches is where I start whenever I'm using an existing character. Makes me want to make all the things! Straw poke bonnet with a muslin veil 😍

    So lately I've been thinking about j
    Jane's dress. Jane was my favorite part of the movie (and show) and one of the things that drew me to her was her lovely yellow dress. I like Tarzan a lot but I felt if I were going to do a Disney cosplay and/or historically adequate costume it should be from a movie or character I Really loved. Also victorian is the era I know the least about when it comes to sewing and construction, yet she would still pop into my head. And now this video. I feel it's a sign
    Usually I gravitate towards belle. I would love to make an 18th Century peasant belle outfit (I have blue stays) and I love her winter look. And if every I gather the gumption to make a robe a la française it will likely be yellow for Belle. I've also considered mint and chocolate colors since I feel RALFs looks like giant desserts 🍨

  • @disneyrules7808
    @disneyrules7808 3 года назад

    Fun Fact: Jane Porter was originally considered as the newest Disney Princess in 1999, not long after the Disney Princess franchise started, she was ultimately removed because her dress color scheme was too similar to Belle's so she was removed for that reason so nobody would confuse her for Belle or confusing Belle for Jane Porter.

    I'm so excited! I also love historical versions of disney characters! I've been painting a historical disney princess series :D At the time, I'm on Pocahontas. If I did a costume, I'd probably do Merida (though not from disney animation studio, but disney still), or Megara or Tiana!

    I'm actually making a historically adequate snow white at the moment, but in doll size :) it's nice to see someone do Jane, it's one of the lesser know dissney heroines

    I would like to do the 1909 version of Jane. I've also been wanting to try Truly Victorian as well.

    You know, after being shipwrecked and running through the jungle, all the snags in your silk probably mimic the slubs of the dupioni. It's clearly the best choice. : )

    This looks like its going to be so fun! I also really am a fan of historically inspired cosplay, I did an Edwardian-ish eclipsa from Star v. the forces of evil a couple years back and just wrapped a 1850's wild west inspired princess peach! I haven't started posting videos about it or anything yet but my next project is a tudor inspired maleficent.

    Can I just quickly say (I'm 2,25 minutes in) how you've improved in talking to the camera? I really noticed there how professionally and easily you spoke and it made me really happy for some reason :) now I'll continue 😅

      Done now, and I really enjoyed the video 🤗 looooved the research and thought behind the design choices you made and the effort to read into the original novel :) I'm so excited for the next parts and I think, an edwardian Jane sounds aaaamaaaazing 😍
      Love from Germany :)

    I don’t have plans on making a historical inspired Disney cosplay, but my best friend suggested I do a young McGonagall because of a photo I sent her wearing a hat I had to get for a bridal show and she called me a boogie McGonagall. I’ve decided an Edwardian inspired young McGonagall even though from what I’ve gathered she was born in the 30s, but I think I can make my hat fit more in the Edwardian time period due to the size of it. I’m hoping to start on it around the end of Summer.

    I'd love to do Aurora using a blue-pink changeable taffeta. Not sure which era I'd pop her in. Perhaps 1959, when her film premiered.

    Hmm I think if I were to make a historical Disney outfit I would pick a villain honestly, most of their color pallettes tend to suit my skin tone so much better than many princesses (why are so few protagonists allowed to have red or dark purple??). I think it would be fun to be Evil Queen or Mother Gothel for the color scheme. If I were picking a princess I would say Belle since there are many outfits to choose from and to be really creative with. (Also who doesn't want to be seen as really smart and have a castle with a giant library at their disposal)
