The video brings up an interesting point without actually saying it explicitly: No number of trees can ever restore Earth's previous carbon balance, because they don't destroy carbon or carbon dioxide, only store it while alive. The carbon in their remains can get stored deeper underground on geological timescales, but not on timescales that are meaningful for us as a civilization. Meanwhile, we are digging up coal and oil which has been storing carbon from life from hundreds of millions of years ago, and re-releasing it into the atmosphere. No number of natural trees could ever contain the collective carbon from eons of past life.
Right! Very interesting, made me think about the number of people that think that trees are going to save us. Personally I thought they destroyed carbon, not that I was taught that but I just assumed because that is what I generally heard
They do destroy carbon, the thing is the they produce is it again in the night time, but i’ve read somewhere that they produce 3 times the amount of oxygen than of co2
@@Didagg Carbon is a fundamental element from the periodic table; not something formed by chemical bonds. It can't be destroyed by anything shy of nuclear fusion/fission. No biological process on Earth can destroy it. Trees use and store carbon in a number of ways, but cannot destroy it.
@@ThePlayerOfGames The glorification of the Amazon as the earth's lungs is very misleading and could be dangerous. According to science, the Amazon contributes 6% of the earth's oxygen and if we were to lose the Amazon completely, you would hardly notice the difference in oxygen supply. @@missdrey954 The difference in 6% oxygen saturation is the difference between feeling normal and able to do fitness and feeling light-headed at rest if you have existing conditions or feeling faint under heavy exertion Ultimately, the Amazon is being burned to fuel the fires of capitalism. This is by no means not saying, let's not save the Amazon forest because there are so many other reasons why the Amazon is vital but, I repeat, people should be informed accordingly because misinformation can be dangerous. For example, if more people knew that most of their oxygen comes from the sea, do you not think there would be more effort to save the ocean? Noone is saying don't save the Amazon, I am saying inform people accordingly because the more people know, the better position they are in to act. It's like how long we've been misinformed that trees will solve the carbon problem when actually planting trees is just creating a carbon sink which is a temporary solution.

Where drylands have been transformed into forests by intensive tree planting a warming effect has been observed. Arid areas are light coloured and reflect the heat from the sun, whereas trees are dark and absorb heat. This quality is known as 'albedo'. It happens in the Arctic when ice melts exposing dark ocean which absorbs more heat and so speeds up the rate of melting. With the best of intentions we do have the potential to make things worse.
My grandmother, who lives in a village, had told me about a giant olive tree that was in a field nearby. She said that it was at least 300 years old,and that it needed six men to hug its trunk-that's how giant it was.Unfortunately,at some point it was chopped down,to make room for a new road...I'm just imagining how many tones of greenhouse gases that tree took care of during its lifetime. I know it would probably don't meen anything but please,If you think of cutting down a tree, think twice:These soldiers of Mother Earth are for a large part responsible for our continued existence... #SaveTheTrees
300 years old for an olive tree is still pretty young. The oldest ones are around 5000 years old. It's certainly sad to see old trees cut down, but their timescales are very different to ours.
If you plant 2 trees (or more) for each tree you cut down, the long term effect will be more trees. This technique won't protect old trees and their ecological and cultural value, but it will protect the continued existence of the forest.
a big part of reducing those emissions is through the use of mycelium, a fungal growth underneath forests with a symbiotic relationship with trees, granting them a communication method while strengthening everything in the area, making growth easier for other plants as well
this INSTANTLY makes this sort of revitalization method MUCH easier as the use of one species can be somewhat mitigated, though sparse dotting of various trees to grow into an area through use of mycelium and time would create a FAR denser, more stable and overall strong forested ecosystem capable of supporting more life, this would make earth passable in the time it requires to make somewhere else minimally livable, so we can focus on getting that running then live more and more on that planet giving this one time to heal while using another planet for the less nature-friendly production

I still have 6 evergreen trees to plant in autumn along with two flowering trees and I want to add 5 more fruit tree plus more bushes for my wild rabbits and birds to play in. Basically…..I want a mini forest. My dad says I’m a lot like my grandpa, while many neighbors hate to see weeds and wildlife eating their hard work I am fascinated by the wild flowers and bunnies that come to eat. My grandpa in Mexico used to pay to clean a spring every single year so wild animals and his pigs could play in the water, everyone called him a lunatic for paying and not using it himself but he said it was totally worth it. Unlike everyone else’s dry land tho, his was always overflowing with water and food. Dad said it was his generosity and that his lands thanked him back by never going dry. A lot of native teachings got lost and my grandpa learned the most from his uncle who just like him learned to love the land and respect the animals there. My parents and I want to make our home turn into a food forest, I hope we can also get solar panels soon too. A tree offers clean air, shade, food, shelter for animals and it’s beautiful so I don’t see problems with more….there was once so many more.

And if we could only step aside and trust in nature, life will find a way.’ We seem to think we’re more important than our natural world, that a billions of years old planet needs us to fix the mess we’ve caused. When in reality it needs our absence and time.

This planet knows how to look after itself, how to regenerate - look at Chernobyl now with 30 years of little to no human intervention, or expanses of the ocean and islands that now don’t allow human visitations - it just needs us to stop taking and trying to alter things.
Yes, this 1000 times. The somewhat good news is that human population is set to plateau and then decline fairly sharply in the next couple of decades. China's population may stabilise as soon as next decade. This means if we campaign to limit pollution, create a carbon tax, and rebuild the ecosystem to some extent, those changes may live to grow and flourish someday.

I would say that solar energy and graphene are the solution, because graphene is a stable form of carbon that is, at the same time, useful for humans. But processing carbon using carbon is not a good idea, this is why we need solar in the equation to provide us with the energy we need. By this process we could extract carbon atoms from carbon dioxide leaving behind oxygen, which could be utilized in other fields or realeased back to the atmosphere.

One way to prevent economic depletion of these restored zones is to integrate fruit bearing plant life that way governments can employ foragers to go pick the fruits and vegetables and sell them this could create jobs while also helping to drop the price of healthy foods. And with such Bountiful plant life wild game is bound to inhabit these restored areas allowing for regulated hunting of game wether it be by the civilian population or employed foragers, this hunted game will help supplement the meat market while we try to move away from large scale animal farming. those are all "good" things.. but minuscule in comparison to the vast emissions caused by the factories around the world operating day and night year round. plus, while wealthier people living in very developed countries have the luxury to be able to do all of those things, you have to understand that the majority of people on earth DO NOT.
See, what I can't understand is why can't we harvest these carbon dioxide emissions from factories or oil stuff (at least in some situations) and transform it for human use? CO2 has plenty of valuable uses, including in fire extinguishers. It just seems like a lot of money and resources we're throwing away by letting it go into the sky.

According to science, the Amazon contributes 6% of the earth's oxygen and if we were to lose the Amazon completely, you would hardly notice the difference in oxygen supply. Correct information is always empowering. If it's more oxygen the earth needs, there are plant species that produce the most oxygen growing elsewhere which isn't necessarily the Amazon.
@@missdrey954 The difference in 6% oxygen saturation is the difference between feeling normal and able to do fitness and feeling light-headed at rest if you have existing conditions or feeling faint under heavy exertion
Ultimately, the Amazon is being burned to fuel the fires of capitalism. So why not extol the virtues of the abused seas as well as the Amazon Rainforest, because ultimately they're both being ruined by the same forces.
@@ThePlayerOfGames The same way you're trusting this science is the same way you should trust the science that says you won't notice. I also don't think you understood what Augustin and I were saying which essentially is, people are misinformed. I would like to point out again that I said if it is more oxygen the world needs, we need to be focusing more on the sea and where the other 24% of oxygen supply comes from which I'm sure most people, myself included aren't really sure.

If you plant 2 trees (or more) for each tree you cut down, the long term effect will be more trees. This technique won't protect old trees and their ecological and cultural value, but it will protect the continued existence of the forest.
and the coolest part is we would have more forest to explore and more nature to enjoy
a big part of reducing those emissions is through the use of mycelium, a fungal growth underneath forests with a symbiotic relationship with trees, granting them a communication method while strengthening everything in the area, making growth easier for other plants as well
this INSTANTLY makes this sort of revitalization method MUCH easier as the use of one species can be somewhat mitigated, though sparse dotting of various trees to grow into an area through use of mycelium and time would create a FAR denser, more stable and overall strong forested ecosystem capable of supporting more life, this would make earth passable in the time it requires to make somewhere else minimally livable, so we can focus on getting that running then live more and more on that planet giving this one time to heal while using another planet for the less nature-friendly production

But processing carbon using carbon is not a good idea, this is why we need solar in the equation to provide us with the energy we need. By this process we could extract carbon atoms from carbon dioxide leaving behind oxygen, which could be utilized in other fields or realeased back to the atmosphere.
That's so cool, I hadn't heard of that until I saw your comment. Thanks for sharing!
The music and and animation is just so calming. Like the time you sit under a tree, peacefully reading a book, inhaling the fresh air that trees give us
One way to prevent economic depletion of these restored zones is to integrate fruit bearing plant life that way governments can employ foragers to go pick the fruits and vegetables and sell them this could create jobs while also helping to drop the price of healthy foods.
And with such Bountiful plant life wild game is bound to inhabit these restored areas allowing for regulated hunting of game wether it be by the civilian population or employed foragers, this hunted game will help supplement the meat market while we try to move away from large scale animal farming.
These areas can also be designated as national parks to help protect them.
Good point!
trees deserver more diversity then anyone i love you ted ed
i agree ur smart u should deserver noble peace prize
i agree with u too we all deserve noble peace prizes
When he said "is there a fast growing, long living tree that we can plant world wide?" my first thought was, invasive plants have a much likelier chance of having a more detrimental impact on ecosystems than invasive animals.
This very enlightening and educative. Thanks so much! I sometimes daydream of the number of trees I could plant if I were as rich as elon musk or jeff bezos, but turns out the issue is much more complex than simply planting new trees.
Question though: what are the six countries you mentioned at 3:55?
LoLNo
HEY TED ED! PLEASE MAKE VIDEO OF COMODO DRAGON and help us to campaign for rejecting the construction in komodo island. the government said that the "construction" will help local business but they actually destroying the only natural habitat of komodo itself! as you know that kodomo is only life in this island
is there a petition we can sign?
@@missdrey954 worthless, the government will ignore it

I've planted 1000+ trees 🌳 during covid 19 pendamic from seeds, which have been alive since 4 years.
I want some trees on my eco-friendly grave, however my religion won't support this, but nature is above everything.
Whoever made this video is awesome! Its so aesthetically pleasing but also educational,With increasing frequency of forest fires on a massive scale, growing demand in the lumber industry, and global urbanization of habitats, From a long-term perspective, we need to plant trees, and I hope more people can join in the activities of planting trees and contribute to the greening of the earth.
"general sherman is the worlds largest tree"
*hyperion:* "am I a joke to you?"

- *Planting trees*
- *Recycling*
- Using Ecosia instead of Google
- Eating plant-based sustenance and reduce meat intake
- Using less plastic
- *Spreading awareness*
- Decreasing plastic use
-helping tear down corporate structures that overwhelmingly cause the most amount of pollution

those are all "good" things.. but minuscule in comparison to the vast emissions caused by the factories around the world operating day and night year round. plus, while wealthier people living in very developed countries have the luxury to be able to do all of those things, you have to understand that the majority of people on earth DO NOT.
FYI: the top 100 oil companies make up over 71% of the entire worlds greenhouse gas emissions.
Beautifully animated, and well explained.
My parents gifted me a tree to plant on my 9th birthday. I'm 37 today and I live on the other side of the planet. But I can see that tree from Google maps. It's one of the best feelings.
question:Can we build a "perfect" forest?
