God bless you for sharing your repair for loss of power on a John Deere tractor. I have a 5055D that just started doing this exact thing. I appreciate the video and detailed instructions on what/how to fix this issue. Thank you thank you!
fuel is horrible nowadays!! I use a product called diesel power service...never had this trouble again. I buy it by the case on Amazon. Here's a link from my amazon page if you're curious. Link does earn commissions which is how I can take the time to create content like this...here ya go: amzn.to/4hlz61u
I like your nerve to tackle and fix the problem. If there were more equipment owners like yourself, maybe if the equipment manuals were more detailed, the equipment owners would be in a position to better maintain their equipment,
A friend of mine who is a diesel truck driver over-the-road driver told me years ago that the diesel we purchase is crap. He owned his truck and he told me he always uses Lucas gas and diesel treatment. 1 qt. per 100 gallons. I have been using it since then and no fuel issues. I have 3 diesel engines and no problems.
Same thing happened with my 5065E, I did the same thing you did. I now put diesel clear additive in every fill up. I also changed the fuel filter, the main cause was the inline fuel strainer within the tank.
We had the same problems on both our JD tractors , the local JD mechanics that service our machines didn't know about the in tank filters. We cleaned them ourselves. Ours was caused by water entering our old plastic tank , replaced it with a new 1500litre tank and all sorted
I had the same issue, removed the plastic filter altogether, installed an inline JD fuel filter about 1 foot down from fuel tank and problem solved. Plus you can remove the JD inline filter when you want, wash it out with water, let dry, re-install....forever. The JD filter does not need replacing, just cleaning/washing.
Howse additive works great for this plus helps lubricate the engine more since all diesel is low sulfur now, I use it every time I fill up my tractor with fuel!
fuel nowadays isn't the best...I use diesel power service in all my tanks now and have not had a problem since. Here's a link to it from my Amazon page if you'd like amzn.to/3Aq5DCW (link earns commissions but doesn't cost ya anything) This is a 6 pack that lasts me several years
I had the same problem with my John Deere 5055. Made a video of it as well. I removed that filter element and replaced it with a 3/8" inline fuel filter, like a Fram G3. You would be surprises at the lack of information out there to keep our tractors working. Glad to see more people sharing their experiences and fixes. 🙂 Keep up the videos.
My Dad had a similar problem with his JD 2210. He used Power Services bio kleen and has not had any problem with the slime plugging his lines and filter since.
Thank you, I had the same issue with my 5045, I just blowed air into the tank, but sometimes it stills having the same problem and I blow air again. Now you gave me the solution. Great chanel! Greetings from Argentina!
I have had problems like you had in the past. One thing I am a beliver in now is running diesel fuel treatment in the fuel. I use John Deere winter fuel treatment year round in mine and have had no issues for several years now.
I am glad that you found the problem and I definitely would replace that filter if I was you so that problem don't come up again for a long time. I have a John Deere 790 tractor without a front bucket and a 3032E tractor with a bucket and so far I have not had major problems with either of them. The 790 tractor had one problem with a fuel line which I replaced and it was back in action.
Good repair. And I laughed when you cleaned the filter then shook it like a thermometer. I thought to myself "yeah he's a nurse" lol. Enjoyed the video👍
I have cleaned many tanks on equipment,, just pull off the drain and line,, drain fuel and pressure wash the inside. Then blow dry with dry with compressed air or a leaf blower..
done this on lawn equipment and you think you got it all out, nope. then you have problems running until all the water gets out of the gas or fuel. Just another can of worms.
Josh, you should consider getting a 275 gallon tank like is used for a fuel oil furnace and have your farm fuel delivered. It will cost a little more, but you will have a single source for fuel and you will eliminate fuel runs.
Glad you found the problem and was able to do a quick temporary fix. Personally I think there is a engineering design problem also. There was enough room to put a filter/cutoff valve assy outside the tank.
The best way to avoid that type of fuel issue is to use a transfer tank with an extra fuel filter in line. I have an old 50 gallon B truck saddle tank with a GPI 12V pump with the LD in line cartridge/ canister filter. It stops 90% of trash getting into the tank. If water is a problem then they have a special waterblock element that I Know Works well.

My father in law has the same model & we’ve had that issue twice. It took over a year for it to happen the second time. The lowest portion of the tank is maybe a half inch below the bottom edge of the filter and debris collects there.
If you have an issue with possible water in your fuel again, go to Napa and get a bottle of Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement. Follow the directions on how much to add to each gallon. This stuff works Awesome. I used to work for a company in NY were we have hundreds of pieces of Equipment, I made sure all of our Fuel was Supplemented with this. We stopped having fuel related issues.
Algae has been an issue here in Alberta Canada as well If you have a good hotsy pressure washer you can flush tank out at home just drain really well flush it out and refill with clean diesel also a treatment of biocide as others have suggested will help
I have a JD 4310, thankfully the full filter is easy to get to and change out. Happy veterans day brother 👨✈️🇺🇲 I've also used Lucas treatment in my diesel fuel, it helps.
Maaaaan! I wish I could afford two tractors. One day hopefully not too far away. The one I currently have and a substantially bigger one. This is the problem my tractor is probably having. Thanks for confirming suspicions. Time to pull a tank and get back to work!
Josh, definitely need to use a biocide additive with your fuel. Also, they make water absorbing socks to place in the filler-neck hang from the chain to absorb any water.

John Deere has a flaw in their fuel tank design. That filter should be about 2 inches or so off the bottom of the tank to allow for settlement and sludge to settle in. All diesel truck tanks have their pickup tubes several inches off the bottom and most of the time they are on level ground. Not like a tractor were it is running on rough terrain most of it's life were the fuel is sloshing back and forth.
If you suspect water in your diesel fuel tank siphon off the bottom of the tank an inch to remove water as its heavier than diesel. Then add Diesel Kleen to remaining fuel as this additive converts the water molecules to burn able fluorocarbons and kills microbes.
Well done. I have 2 suggestions for you that might help. One, if you don't already have one. Get a set of nut drivers, the will save you a lot of work with those hose clamps. The second and probably more important, get a in line water separator filter to put on the outlet of your tank in the truck. This will help to make sure that you are feeding your tractors good fuel. Take care!
David you make a good point...I'm actually working on a video called "The Psychology of the Screwdriver"....this will detail why I went with the screwdriver v/s the nut driver..I have both and agree with you...but for some reason I still went with the screwdriver lol
Everything I have that runs on diesel I run run a additive in the fuel to disapate the water, I also installed inline water and trash seperaters. This allows me to eliminate the in tank filter, where it starts. Then if I have problems I can look into the glass bowl to check and if need change the filters. This guarantees that it won't make it to the pump or engine, which could be very expensive. Good luck.
Well...almost 5 years of fuel put in this tractor and this is the first issue. You make a great point...for sure all the fuel put in every tractor I've got is filtered before and after it's added to the tank...sometimes there's no winning! Grrr frustrating for sure
I'd call that an EASY learn! Just a hose clamp and some brake cleaner. I'd have taken close up pictures of that filter to show your diesel source. I wonder if you might have needed to flush out tank. Not much crap drained out, but how much of what is growing in there did the filter actually catch? Find a way to treat all the fuel you have in storage. Treat that infection, it could come back.
Most all the older 5Es have the screen and create the same issue. Most Tractors we deal with we take that screen out completely. Then just install a in-line fuel filter close to the tank that’s easier to service rather than draining the whole fuel tank.
You can reuse the fuel you took out just use a funnel with a filter in it to catch the trash in the fuel. The funnel we use to put fuel in our tractor has a filter in the bottom. It slows down the speed of filling but you catch all the trash. It dose not work on water or any moisture in the fuel.
Always look to your local (most local) truck-stop for ideas and fixes too. Diesel-kleen is great for cleaning algae and bio-sludge from the fuel system. As I don't farm, not sure if it is available at tractor shops or farm stores, but it should clean your system with no more than we saw in the bucket. Good luck, stay safe, and we'll see you on the next video.

I glad you find the trouble something easy to fix with that John deere but what about your other tractors they might have bad fuel too I hope they a fuel filter on the fuel hose
If your planning on putting an inline filter in. I'd take strainer out and throw it away and just screw the fitting back into the tank. At least with the inline you won't have to worry about having to drain the tank every time it clogs up. Just pinch both sides of fuel line before changing the inline filter.
Your Massey Ferguson's will have these filter's too. Ask your John Deer dealer if a "Mr. Gasket 9706 Universal Clearview Fuel Filter" would work right after the tank (I don't know myself) but if it dose it can also be ordered off of Amazon with fixed size chrome nipples on it tool and you can get replacement filter elements too.
Bio diesel will do this if not used quickly enough. I'm guessing it's a 20% blend. Had a truck that wasn't used over the summer and the tank was full of algae. That was 80 gallons gone to waste. And the inline filter is always a good idea!
Blow the pick up filter out with the compressor. You are either getting dirty fuel from your supplier or you own storage system. That can happen if they run their tank dry and and the new fuel going in disturbs the sediment that accumulates. Most stations don't left their tanks get to that point. Then there is diesel bug that grows in your tank it looks slimey similar to water being in there. Hows the filter look on your own storage tank. Does it have a water trap?
This is a common problem with bio- diesel blend. Use a quality diesel fuel additive with each fill up also add it to your storage container at fill up. make sure the additive is also a lubricant to replace the sulfur in older equipmen like the MF 65
I would reccomend using some of that hotshots secrect you used in your pickup, also when fueling any piece of equipment, especially out of a can, we use those cheap disposable paint filters in the bottom of a funnel
Just found your channel & I like. One thing: Brake cleaner eats green paint right off your tractor. Suggest keeping it away from any painted surfaces you may wish to remain painted. Wooooo!
I don't think your wasting the fuel when you use it for other things. Such as you said, starting fires and cleaning things. Good reason to keep fuel receipts in case this station's fuel is contaminated and damages a lot of equipment. That is about the only way to prove it.
If you use a lot of diesel, it's worth getting a fuel polisher. Should be able to get one for less than $500. Saves time and money long term. Split it with you stepdad.
You can filter and reuse the diesel Josh.....put rags in funnel then pour drain diesel in....instead of loosing 7 gallons lost 1 gallon is alright isn't it.....I tried before....primary strainer usually over looked....
I think you were right when you said the problem was at the gas station. the problem is called diesel bug. A type of bacteria that grows in the boundary layer between the diesel fuel and any water that gets into there tanks (and I mean ANY WATER). Diesel is hygroscopic and draws water from the air even without water contamination, over time if the tanks are not drained from the bottom till all traces of water are cleared. but if diesel bug is let to propagate, clearing the tanks of water is too late as the bacteria holds water in suspension in the fuel and needs to be treated with something like Marine 16. I have no affiliation with them but I had to use it on my cruiser. Sorted the problem of sludgy mold growth in my tanks and filters.
Did that fuel come out of the truck tank that you fixed the pump on? Could be a two fold issue. I have always used Power Service or Howe’s fuel additive to prevent water related issues. You can buy water absorbers to drop in the tank that are attached by a cable. Once a month remove the absorber and hang it in a covered area to evaporate the moisture. Replace in tank to continue water protection.

I have an acquaintance who had to replace half his engine and fuel system because of algae. He flushed everything over and over, used every cleaner in the book and even after that he got build up and engine/power problems because of a gunked up diesel pump.
Here in the UK they took most of the sulphur out of our diesel with the result it became a much more hospitable growth media for bacteria. The bacteria grows in the moisture trapped in the fuel, sulphur was an effective bactericide. If your local retailer does not have a high turnover of fuel I suspect that is your issue. Regards from Scotland.

Wow i never would've thought that would happen. Hopefully your Fuek distributor will clean their product. I've seen this in Sunoco gasoline. They seem to have dirty fuel. Thanks Josh.
Best of luck getting your fuel supplier to admit "YES" we have issues...As cheap as those inline filters are replacement w/new is cheap insurance. Also those filters are generic and can be bought a lot cheaper fm eBay or Amazon.
Bingo on the algae. Unfortunate reoccurring issue with diesel ownership. Shipping from refinery to local port of entry is often by barge. Any moisture accumulated in transit feeds the algae. The algae is a chemotroph; requires no sunlight for sustenance and really goes to town on the sulfur in the fuel. Redline additive has helped me in the past. I guess it's kind of luck of the draw on each fuel delivery

I had an inline external filter clog on my 1025r two days ago. Great video as always. 😊
Great job. Process of elimination. I hope the fuel situation improves in you area from that station.
If your planning on putting an inline filter in. I'd take strainer out and throw it away and just screw the fitting back into the tank. At least with the inline you won't have to worry about having to drain the tank every time it clogs up. Just pinch both sides of fuel line before changing the inline filter.
Seems like it’s always something small. Glad you worked it out. Great videos👍
Yep...the thorn in the tiger's paw
Your Massey Ferguson's will have these filter's too. Ask your John Deer dealer if a "Mr. Gasket 9706 Universal Clearview Fuel Filter" would work right after the tank (I don't know myself) but if it dose it can also be ordered off of Amazon with fixed size chrome nipples on it tool and you can get replacement filter elements too.
Love watching you always.
Have a great Sunday
Good information, thanks!.. and enjoy your videos, be watching!
Sometimes Deere likes to hide strainers in the injection pumps as well. Out of site.
Visit a auto paint supply store, they should have the disposal large filters that will fit your funnel.
Never knew that there was a in tank filer. Good to know thanx Josh!
Josh you probably should have flushed the tank with fresh fuel before putting the valve back on.
Just found your channel & I like. One thing: Brake cleaner eats green paint right off your tractor. Suggest keeping it away from any painted surfaces you may wish to remain painted. Wooooo!
Hey Josh thank you for the video
JD 5045e here confirming it's the same. Thanks for pre trouble shooting for me when it happens haha
I don't think your wasting the fuel when you use it for other things. Such as you said, starting fires and cleaning things. Good reason to keep fuel receipts in case this station's fuel is contaminated and damages a lot of equipment. That is about the only way to prove it.
I have a JD5065e very helpful thank you!!!!
If you use a lot of diesel, it's worth getting a fuel polisher. Should be able to get one for less than $500. Saves time and money long term. Split it with you stepdad.
Great video
You can filter and reuse the diesel Josh.....put rags in funnel then pour drain diesel in....instead of loosing 7 gallons lost 1 gallon is alright isn't it.....I tried before....primary strainer usually over looked....
Keep watching till the end you'll get a chuckle!
Hi.... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
I think you were right when you said the problem was at the gas station. the problem is called diesel bug.
Not too difficult. I have seen issues like this before. Good job, Josh.
I have a 1940 Allis Chalmers B that I am working on getting it running better

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I live in South Carolina, so you are within driving range. I am heading down to Beaufort this weekend (Parris Island: Boot Camp) to have Thanklsgiving with two children, then I have to get a car repaired, After that I could drive up and meet your brother; if he is open to meeting an Old Salt Marine, heh heh. Had the same problem with my 5065 it’s been a problem since I bought it .
here's the cure that I've found my brother: this is a link from my amazon affiliate page...I buy it by the case and have not had a fuel problem since!!! amzn.to/46HR2O2 (I do earn a commission from Amazon sales, but you don't pay anything extra..again..I buy this by the case!)
Piss the strainer off and fit an in-line filter. Then you can see it and turn the fuel off to replace the filter instead of loosing fuel.
Thanks buddy...great feedback!
Thank you for the information. It helped me I appreciated
Amen on the fix bro good to know on that I would have never thought there was a filter in tank but thx for showing and godbless
MOUSE IN THE TANK FOUND ON THE NEIGHBORS 455D HAIR CLOGGED UP THE INTERNAL FILTER IN THE TANK 3 HOURS TRACING THE PROBLEM DOWN . WAS NOT WASTING 5 GALLONS OF FUEL RAN ALL THE FUEL THROUGH A FUNNEL AND A WHITE T SHIRT ATTACHED TO A 1/2 INCH FUEL LINE AND A INLINE HIGH FLOW RACE CAR FUEL FILTER.
Thanks so much for the information Brother. I always enjoy learning at someone else's expense :) I have a 5055E, and will be doing this proactively as soon as I get my diesel levels down a bit.
Just did a video on this tube a couple weeks ago! Keep up the good work man. Wish I would have seen this a while back.
shew...I now put diesel power service additive in every tank!!!
Same problem checking mine now.
got a great vid coming out next week on fuel systems....be sure ya check it out!! It will save you from ever having this issue again!
